| Deftones Listening Guide
The Deftones are a band that always does a nice job of pacing their albums. Each one seems to have a mini-arch or a story that follows with it. I was listening to them the other day and I realized that each album has a certain vibe to it, particularly mapping out a moment in a night of partying. What I did was rearrange the albums in an order that would walk the reader through the night. I understand that some songs would be a little jarring (almost all the openers would be a bit out of place especially later) but I tried to think of the overall emotion and vibe captured in each album to put them in a progression that would make sense. | 1 | | Deftones Adrenaline
5:00 p.m. / You’re off work or school and on your way home. The sun is out, warm and yellow in the afternoon sky. Adrenaline is totally a daytime album, the music is raw and aggressive. This album lends itself well to hanging out with the crew, getting ready for a long night of drinking and throwing down. There isn’t a lot of depth to it, but that’s OK. For you, the listener, it marks the early stages of a good time. | 2 | | Deftones Around the Fur
7:00 p.m./ The sun is setting/ has freshly set. The party is getting started, people are flooding in. Beer pong is in the kitchen, shots are on the counter, and people are out on the back porch throwing back beers. Despite this album being pretty aggressive and angry lyrically the party energy is positive, people are just starting to vibe, and the makings of an epic night are taking place. | 3 | | Deftones White Pony
11:00 p.m. / The party is in full swing. People are making out, beer is being spilled. Voices beat against the pulse of the music. People are dancing on and grabbing each other. The party is still raw, and yet we begin to see party fatigue setting in. The last two songs kind of hint to what’s to come, and the first group of people begin to leave towards the end. The lightness that was initially there has begun to evolve and gravity starts to take hold. | 4 | | Deftones Diamond Eyes
12:00 p.m. / The party vacuums indoors, save for the straggling group of people smoking and talking on the patio. The drinks are still coming, but maybe at a slower rate than previously. The atmosphere begins to take on a heaviness, and discussions grow deeper as drunk minds wander. This isn’t necessarily a bad thing (people crying, being overly dramatic) but there is a sense of weight that wasn’t there before. | 5 | | Deftones Deftones
1:00 a.m. / Cheap beer has turned to darker spirits. The majority of the party guests have left, leaving only you and your closest friends. You’re walking around, cleaning up and passing out blankets to the random stragglers passed out on couches and floors. Those still awake have all coagulated into one room, sipping their drink of choice to keep the buzz going. A joint is being passed around and the party is evolving to the next stage. | 6 | | Deftones Saturday Night Wrist
3:00 a.m. / The party is now a gathering, in the thick of it. The heaviness from S/T gives way to dreamy darkness as people nod off from booze or other vices. Conversations start to break into pairs as people lose the ability to focus on one thing for very long. The room is hazy now, not from smoke but from blurred perception. You’re deep within a drunken/ high stupor. | 7 | | Deftones Koi No Yokan
4:00 a.m. / The world feels like a dream. Most people are dropping off at this point but you stumble outside, maybe to sit on the roof or in the grass. The world has a mystical quality to it, and whether you’re with another like-minded drunk wanderer or on your own you’re too messed up to go to sleep. The high is good. You aren’t on your phone, but enjoying the sensation of being alive, the lone survivor or something wonderful. So you wander or sit and watch as the night begins to loosen its grip on the world. | 8 | | Deftones Gore
5:30 a.m./ The sun rises. You’re on the roof, in a chair on the porch, and coming down from the night. Maybe things are fuzzy… but maybe things are somehow clearer now. The night has progressed in a almost meditative way, and the end result makes you feel more aware of yourself and those around you. Warm colors come back to the world and you wearily watch as the new day rises. | |

11.22.16 | Pretty interesting, cool idea! | onionbubs
11.22.16 | yea cool list. enjoyed reading it | BeyondCosby
11.22.16 | Thanks man! I enjoyed writing haha. I may try to do it with other bands when I can think of a concept that works. | BallsDeep
11.22.16 | Enjoyed reading that even if you weren't very imaginative in your ordering of them lol
| BallsDeep
11.22.16 | It's funny when i've had house parties i'd often blast white pony and other defones in the early hours when majority have left and the rest are in some state of narcosis. It was definitely made for that sort of environment | BeyondCosby
11.22.16 | Yeah I was trying to think about how to order the first three a little better. If anything, maybe Diamond Eyes would go before White Pony but if we're counting the remaster that starts with "Back to School" I can't imagine that would play better after the heaviness of Diamond Eyes. | BallsDeep
11.22.16 | Actually I wouldn't change much with the order, I'd probably still swap WP with DE though because WP has always appealed to me with a late night/early hours type vibe. 1, 2 and 8 definitely have more of a daytime atmosphere to them and DE after nigthfall but before midnight sort of thing. I'd say 5-7 are in perfect order though. | BallsDeep
11.22.16 | my god we have too much time on our hands | BeyondCosby
11.22.16 | Haha too much time is never a bad thing. Thanks for the discussion man. I really think Gore has that nice, "Day After/ Hungover" vibe. I think WP is still a little too energetic for later in the night but I totally see what you're saying. | BallsDeep
11.22.16 | yeah 5-8 i should have said.
The real question is where would Eros fit into the equation. Definitely sounded like a late night one based on the single , fuck I hope we get to hear it at some point regardless of its completion status. | BallsDeep
11.22.16 | also no need to thank me for discussing that's what i'm here for, love me some trivial music discussions lol | BeyondCosby
11.22.16 | Ugh... thinking of Eros hurts. Why won't they just release it?
I think it would probably be between DE and S/T. I don't care too much for S/T anyways but "Smile" makes it seem like it would be an excellent blend of heavy and dreamy. Have they released other songs? | Valkoor952
11.22.16 | I would say SNW is a morning album, but that just might be the fact that I listened to it non-stop during the hours of 7am-9am and it was magical. Also DE feels like a night-ish album.
Cool list nonetheless. Now all we need is to find other people who listen to Deftones we can do this with. | claygurnz
11.22.16 | This was cool. Props. | onionbubs
11.22.16 | The snw is perfect | claygurnz
11.22.16 | Also I like Gore being at the end because while I do like it a lot, it's a tad disappointing. It's like a mild comedown, the feelings of regret and self doubt are there, but ultimately the time you had with your friends and the feelings you associate with it overcome those negative thoughts.
In plain English this band is so consistent I'm willing to overlook a slight slip up. | Thalassic
11.22.16 | Cool idea | BeyondCosby
11.22.16 | @Valkoor952 That's interesting. I've never really thought of it as a morning album but I could see how, on a cold morning with a darker sunrise this would be pretty sweet.
| Valkoor952
11.22.16 | "on a cold morning with a darker sunrise"
exactly the way I listened to it, magical stuff. | wristcry

11.22.16 | what are you a pussy | Mordecai.
11.22.16 | Cool list idea. When I listen to White Pony and S/T back-to-back, WP definitely feels like the exhilarating high while S/T is the depressive comedown. | DigitalSchism
11.23.16 | This was a cool read and nice list idea. | BeyondCosby
