LAST CALL [SIGNUPS] Build-An-Album³: This Time It’s Personal

Oh hello there! Welcome to the official 3rd edition of Build-an-Album, the most nailbiting, exhilarating, and downright wacky tournament on Sput!

Self Immolation Family b/w World Virgins

What is Build-an-Album?
3Ken Burns
Discography

Started in 2018 by the ever entrepreneurial MarsKid with its inaugural competition, this tournament caught the attention of Sputnik’s collective hearts and minds alike, as contestants battled through the whims of the genre roulette and Mars’ twisted and psychotic rules. This tournament however was to end early after its illustrious host faced the most painful affliction of all: burnout. This was not to be the end of Build-an-Album as a whole however, and after the first edition’s slightly premature conclusion and extended hiatus hiatus, the second and best iteration so far debuted in 2022 with a rejuvenated spirit that managed to complete its journey from signups to grand finale in relatively smooth sailing (bar an unforgettable/unforgivably cruel djent round). The rounds were hotly contested, but one mantra became evident throughout the competition: consistency is key. And Mr. Consistent himself won this tournament with a string of brilliant submissions that amazed Mars’, from an all UK hip-hop round to an incredible timeline of post-hardcore history. That person was of course… me.

Ambivalent EP

Mars’ steady hand guided us all the way through as he suffered through hours and hours of music, and several Tundra submissions somehow did not break him. But now is the time for a new era, and as the reigning champion of Build-an-Album, I have assumed the reins for this third instalment. And if you thought things were about to come back down to reality with a nice gentle voyage across the musical sea, you are very, very wrong. Get ready for the wackiest Build-an-Album yet, as Mars’ gets a closer look at what it means to be a Build-an-Album contestant, and I try to survive the torture that is sure to come my way.

How Does it Work?

More will be revealed with Round 1, however previous participants will be familiar with the idea of phases. As a general rule, all participants will get at least three (possibly more) rounds to prove themselves, this is Phase 1. You will submit a playlist to the brief of each round and at the end of the phase those with the lowest average will be eliminated before moving on to Phase 2, which will be explained in due time.

Masquerades & Silhouettes

Your playlists will be centred around a genre picked at random each round with a generator from any genre taggable on sputnik. There will however be additional rules on each entry, some more obvious ones (countries of origin, time limits, banned entries) and some completely dumb to challenge you to make your playlist as good as possible. Rounds aren’t super quick because I anticipate having to get through a LOT of music and needing to write up my thoughts and so this is extended to submissions to - I will give ample time for you to make the best playlist you can, but I don’t want to have to chase up people constantly if you don’t submit in the very reasonable deadlines I’ll give.

And it’s not all about the tracks either - often the best playlists will be ones that aren’t so much about the highlights, but the flow and getting that immaculate vibe. Express yourself!

For an example of what the competition is like feel free to check any of Mars’ lists from the last competition such as the one below.

How Do I Join?

Walls of Jericho

Let me know in the comments below if you definitely want in. All previous Build-an-Album contestants are guaranteed a spot if they want it, and I am open to including as many new faces as want to join as long as you can commit to it (it’s really not too hard on the contestant side, it took me maybe 2-3 hours a month to make my submissions each time). The more people sign up the merrier, a big signup will just result in a bigger cull at the end of Phase 1.

Prizes
11Negative Scanner
Nose Picker

As Mars graciously did in the last edition, I will be offering a cash prize (through PayPal or something like that) for the finalists and winner. I will likely raise the amounts a bit depending on my situation at the time of the conclusion (SEN support staff doesn’t bring home the big bucks) but as a minimum I will be awarding the following prizes.

£15 for 3rd place.

£20 for 2nd place.

£25 for 1st place.

Or an equivalent item or something we’ll work it out when we get to it.
