BoJack Horseman S5

1. half of the season: 5-6/10 2. half of the season: 8/10
1Soundtrack (Television)
BoJack Horseman

So a few things come to mind of what went wrong:
2Soundtrack (Television)
BoJack Horseman

1. What are your priorities?
The humour is now full-on background aspect. This show became a drama. All the zaniness is either completely eradicated from an episode or is thrown in awkwardly and to a hollow reaction. It's just sad that they gave in to the temptation of making people go "man, that was harsh", forgetting that those "harsh" moments only worked, because they were so cleverly poised in a unexpected moments. Now you just know something fucked up is coming and it doesn't have as much a punch anymore. And even the episodes from the previous season that were like that all throughout still worked, because the rest of the season was unlike them. Now it just became the same thing again and again. I can think of a few standout jokes or gags from this season at best and none of them come even close to anything from the past.

2. Storylines focusing on single characters.
Why did it go all Arrested Development and instead of having cohesive, multilayered storylines in each episode, they suddenly decided to turn (nearly) each episode into each character's separate little journey. Again, not like it didn't happen before, but not on a whole season's scale.

3. "Free Churro"
nuff said.
It's an interesting concept, but it just doesn't work. If they made those revelations come up one after another in a more interesting episode that isn't just (SPOILER) one scene with BoJack, all that you'd lose is an okay joke at the end that almost negates the whole episode's depth. I get that this may have been a budget decision, but this episode was easily the most unnecessary style-over-substance use in the show.

4. It became a little too preachy.
Let's turn this into the same thing that Idles' album thread turned into, shall we? Oftentimes, the show mocks the values and oddities of Hollywood ideologues in a clever way, but then it can also fall face first into that very mud. It's a strange dissonance, especially in the episode "BoJack the Feminist", but what do I know? I just found it more or less cringeworthy how it tried to laugh at itself, but also pretend like it's on a righteous high... horse (yeesh).
You can go ahead and ignore this point, the previous ones are enough of a reason this season is a treason.
