Papa Universe
09.14.18 | discuss |
Papa Universe
09.14.18 | I also feel as though this season is in the same state the first was. S1 was all-out comedy with some heavy leaning, S5 is the exact opposite (more-or-less). |
StallionMang
09.14.18 | haven't seen it yet but the show has always done drama far better than comedy so im ready for it to go all in |
StallionMang
09.14.18 | kinda expected that shift to happen soonish anyway, the same thing they did w moral orel when that was on |
nol
09.14.18 | yeah I felt like it was going in this direction after watching part of season 4. Real shame, first three seasons were fucking primeee |
Papa Universe
09.14.18 | I mean, the stories are still compelling sometimes (note: sometimes), but when it's all just drama, it just loses its flare and uniqueness. Now there isn't even a point of it being part of BoJack universe, really. |
Papa Universe
09.14.18 | Also, Pickles is the best new characters. |
Papa Universe
09.14.18 | Also, quit messing with the credits theme. |
butcherboy
09.14.18 | after the several peaks the show reached last season, they were due to start the slide downwards.. |
Papa Universe
09.14.18 | and it really only gets really good after episode 7. everything before is either lackluster or fine |
Papa Universe
09.14.18 | it hurts. |
Papa Universe
09.14.18 | Norm Macdonald Has A Show is a much better Netflix newcomer. |
butcherboy
09.14.18 | nothing lasts forever.. macdonald's stand up is always on point (though he definitely hasn't always transferred that to long show formats), so will check that.. |
Papa Universe
09.14.18 | it's charmingly awkward. it's literally the same thing as his podcast, but on Netflix and with a bigger budget (not like that makes a difference) |
butcherboy
09.14.18 | oh, i thought he may have a tv show out.. meh, his podcast can be great, guests get better than a slew of washed-up comedians with a bigger budget i presume.. |
GreyShadow
09.14.18 | oooo I loved this season and thought Free Churro was great. The humor was still very much present (and it kept me dying of laughter) but yes, it's obviously a drama at this point.
I will say the divide between character stories was far more noticeable this time around but that wasn't a huge determent to the overall pacing |
Papa Universe
09.14.18 | depends. do you consider Letterman, Jane Fonda, Chevy Chase, the Sixth Sense guy and that one sorta comedian everyone keeps casting for whatever reason a better guest entourage? |
Papa Universe
09.14.18 | it does pick up the pace in season 2 (talking about BoJack now) and there are some truly great episodes and fantastic moments, but that only makes the gloomy awkwardness of the first half all the worse. and it's not even Norm Macdonald kind of awkward |
Papa Universe
09.14.18 | funniest moments would be BoJack on The View, Henry Fondler, tongue twisters, Pickles and Mr. Peanutbutter first encounter and first date
just outta top of my head. |
Papa Universe
09.14.18 | ooh, the reimagining of the characters to hide their identity was kinda fun |
Papa Universe
09.14.18 | and Mr. Peanutbutter's "family farm" dilemma was hilarious. |
Papa Universe
09.14.18 | "Head in the Clouds" and "The Showstopper" are fantastic episodes. |
CugnoBrasso
09.14.18 | Free Churros was easily one of my faves, it's the point where the season starts being good. |
TheCharmingMan
09.14.18 | Cugno [2] and the whole running gag of Bobo the Angsty Zebra had me rolling imagining the voice actors reading the script. I think I'm just a fanboy of the show at this point though. I definitely loved this season but I do feel that compared to season 3 or 4 it felt like it was more contained and made less progress with the characters |
Papa Universe
09.14.18 | I mean, it is solid and I am softening up to it slowly (Int. Sub, Ancient History, Head in the Clouds, The Showstopper are all fantastic episodes), so it might really be that this season just loses compared to say 3 or 4, which is where the show has reached its peak. |
Slex
09.14.18 | I...just can't disagree more. I'm on episode 7 now and I've thought the entire time "I'm really surprised how hilarious this season is", it's been by far the funniest yet for me. I think it's the most balanced, assured and bold it's ever been. |
Papa Universe
09.14.18 | will probably rewatch and will most likely raise my opinion of it. I remember being more or less lukewarm on the first season at first too. |
GreyShadow
09.15.18 | I liked the first half. And I love Rami Malek as Flip. Free Churro and Head In The Clouds...hell, that episode to the end, were my probably my favorites |
GreyShadow
09.15.18 | The Showstopper might be my least favorite of the cursed Episode 11's but I still really liked it and thought it was yet another really cool idea. |
TheCharmingMan
09.15.18 | Have to agree that the cursed Episode 11 of this season was the worst so far but I think the ending for it and how it lead to the season finale was probably as dark as the show could have gotten for Bojack and the metoo movement tie in |
artiswar
09.15.18 | Gonna binge this soon, so fucking excited! |
BlazinBlitzer
09.15.18 | Just finished watching the season. I definitely agree with having too many single-character episodes. Though most of them were very good, it was awkwardly anthropologic for a bit there. Besides that bog, I'd say the characters are as good as ever, easter eggs and sight gags never disappointed, and the writing took high risks and produced mostly high rewards. Also loved the direction they went with Mr. Peanut Butter. Ranking-wise:
1 < 2, 3, 5 < 4 |
BlazinBlitzer
09.15.18 | SPOILER:
RIP Henry Fondle |
artiswar
09.15.18 | I'm hard as a diamond |
Papa Universe
09.15.18 | Yeah, I'm getting softer on it. The second half of the season is still great, but the first I am absolutely sure to call series' weakest. |
BlazinBlitzer
09.15.18 | The only episode I’d call outright bad this season is the first one. It feels really cluttered and it never gets its footing until the next episode. |
artiswar
09.15.18 | Just watched episode 6. Holy shit, what a doozy. |
Slex
09.16.18 | So yeah I thought this season was maybe just a little behind 3 as the best yet (I also thought the first half was noticeably funnier and a little more consistent) |
zaruyache
09.16.18 | watched the first two eps last night and woah they really started heavy on the sad with Diane's stuff. I liked how they did it. Gonna watch more of it tonight and i'm pretty hyped still. |
RadioheadIsOverrated
09.16.18 | I honestly loved season 5. I mean I loved it, at this point it's my favorite season.
5>3>4>2>1 |
artiswar
09.16.18 | Having Todd stay with Carolyn was a stroke of genius.
As a whole so far this is easily the weakest season for me (I'm only on ep 7 though). |
Trebor.
09.16.18 | The funeral episode is amazing dude
Having lost my mom recently it was super scary accurate |
artiswar
09.16.18 | Damn that sucks. That episode was like top 3 Bojack for me. Halfway through the Hallowe'en episode now and wowwww what a blast. I love the format of this show sometimes, and the flashbacks are always gold. If the season keeps this up I'll have to re-rank it. |
artiswar
09.16.18 | Man, I love the simple eloquence of Diane's last speech. That hit so close to home and it's one of the best scenes in the entire show for me. The season really turned around in the second half, first few eps were a bit rocky.
Still waiting for that Erica episode though. |
Slex
09.16.18 | An Erica episode would be amazing lmao |
artiswar
09.16.18 | Can you imagine if they pieced all those off-screen tidbits into some insane but coherent story? |
Slex
09.16.18 | 100% believe they'd be more than capable of doing it too |
Papa Universe
09.16.18 | yeah, I'll raise the overall rating to 7/10 personally, but it is still the weakest of them all |
theacademy
09.16.18 | im so hear for the wrong opinion snap judgments following first binge
some things never change haha love yall |
theacademy
09.16.18 | remember when people found s4 sub par during the first weekend bahahahahaha |
theacademy
09.16.18 | also free churro was pretty brilliant |
Slex
09.16.18 | S4 is still the 2ND weakest behind S1 lol |
Papa Universe
09.16.18 | 3>4>2>1>5 |
Trebor.
09.16.18 | I think I laughed more at this season than the last two. There's just less of the annoying wacky kind of crap that was always the worst part of the show
Pickles is awful, she's definitely in that camp of humor I don't like
I don't really see any of it being preachy at all. They mostly just cover things that are obvious and make fun of them like a comedy does |
Slex
09.16.18 | 3>5>2>4>1
Also I love Pickles but totally understand lol |
Papa Universe
09.16.18 | I also thought she might be one of those occasionally irritating characters (and to a point she was during Mr. Peanutbutter's Boos), but I guess the hyperactive energy and chemistry with Mr. Peanutbutter won me over. |
onionbubs
09.17.18 | season was incredible and as always, fucked me up |
artiswar
09.17.18 | I was very underwhelmed by the early Diane and Yolanda episodes. I wonder if that will change on rewatch. |
GreyShadow
09.17.18 | Idk how I'd rank 3, 4, and 5. I love em all.
|
artiswar
09.17.18 | 3 was the best by a fairly long-shot. 4 came rather close, then 2. I don't know if 1 or 5 goes on the bottom, it's too hard to tell after 1 watch of S5. |
Papa Universe
09.17.18 | Anyone else's take? |
