| Cut Deeper 25/12/17
(not) YEAR END LIST 8/14. This will be the first instalment in my new series dedicated to deep cuts on all sorts of albums. I noticed that people tend to gravitate towards single song recommendations more than towards full album ones. Therefore I will only be doing a tenner of tracks each week, so that you won't end up weary. I think I will be putting these out around mondays, so that you had something to go through the week with, but we'll see. | 1 | | White Lies Big TV
Mother Tongue
"What do you think your mother would say of what you've done?"
Remember those times, when a bunch of UK Post-Punk-ish bands decided that they are going to create their own movement of Stadium Rock fuelled Post-Punk? There were like the Editors, White Lies, also Bloc Party jumped on that bandwagon too. But then it kind of deteriorated and went pretty much nowhere and hasn't been talked about or heard of since. Well, these bands still exist and are still trying to make their moves in that direction, although each and every one of them falling further down that slippery Pop slope, may each of these bands' more recent releases be a proof of that. If I remember correctly, Big TV has been the last of the actually 'trying-to-make-this-a-thing' projects. huh. | 2 | | White Lies Big TV
But this thread isn't about remembering the poorly shaped, unnecessary by-products of a bunch of overly ambitious pommies. Let's focus on the album at hand, which in my opinion was one of the better products to come out of that entire peroid. Besides, the cover features a painting by one of my favourite modern-artist, Michael Kagan. Look him up, lads. And the song we're focusing on in here is one of the album's most vibrant, atmospheric and grande cuts with an infectious hook. | 3 | | The Magnetic Fields 50 Song Memoir
'68: A Cat Called Dionysus
"He hated me, but I loved him."
Cats are cunts. And I love them. They're often mean and dickish to everyone and everything. And they will only cuddle up to you or act cute to get what they want, which is more often than not a treat, because, c'mon, what else can we actually give them? However, if you do win their affection, they are more loyal than any pesky dog can ever be. You need to be a damn good person and a textbook example of someone worth respecting if even a cat loves you. So when you do all that hard work, but it doesn't bear fruits, naturally you are disappointed. Now, imagine you're a child, who can't even begin to fathom these concepts. Having the cutest thing in the world so actively detesting you for your foolish actions can weigh heavily on your soul. | 4 | | Menomena Moms
Heavy Is As Heavy Does
"As prideful as a man he was, proud my father never was of me"
Much simpler than a relationship between a cat and a child is a relationship between a son and a ruthless father. Menomena have always excelled at eccentrically written music with a dose of humour and goofiness. But on this track, everything gets serious. Everything is grim and grounded, as you explore the sorrowful disappointment one feels upon their emotional detachment from their familial peers. That doesn't mean that the song doesn't possess that extravagant, overwhelming crescendo we all grew to love. Boy oh boy, it does. Menomena, making you unexpectedly emotional since 2004. | 5 | | PUP The Dream Is Over
Sleep in the Heat
"I want you to know thay I'd spend every bit of my pitiful savings and loans just to see you again, but I know I won't"
Oh look, another song about pets... well, dead pets. But this one is actually a hard-hitting punk beast, so don't let that slip by you. | 6 | | Franz Ferdinand Right Thoughts, Right Words, Right Action
The Universe Expanded
"I'll meet you coming backwards"
A relationship so important to you that you are unable to let go, when it's over. You can't make yourself. You just can't. You only wish the world would turn backwards, reverse time and relive all those precious memories over again. | 7 | | St. Vincent Actor
Black Rainbow
"Bird outside the kitchen, fightin' his reflection. What's he gonna win when he wins?"
If electrifying build-ups is what you seek, look no further. Black Rainbow by Art-Pop virtuoso Annie Clark is about as vibrant, pulsating and explosive as one could ever wish, as the song continuously morphs and transforms into a monstrous demonic creature of sonic instrumentation and warping, near-industrial production. | 8 | | Television Adventure
Foxhole
"Soldier boy stands at a full salute, he wants your orders to excute"
Shocker! I chose a song from Adventure over Marquee Moon. But the thing is, I believe that Marquee Moon you should know to the very core by now, whereas even the better moments of the band's remaining discography tend to get neglected. The incredibly fun and vibrant Foxhole might just be one of my absolute favourites on this album. It's catchy, lighthearted and easy going. Just give it a shot. | 9 | | Wipers Follow Blind
Any Time You Find
"But time is your only exception"
Pretty much the same situation as with Television's Foxhole. By this point in their career, Wipers have completely fallen into that pit of Post-Punk triviality they were once an alternative to. But that doesn't mean that they didn't do the sound justice, for even though this album is no Youth of America (or Is This Real? for that matter), it is still a solid-ass record and this is a damn striking track. | 10 | | Kasabian West Ryder Pauper Lunatic Asylum
Secret Alphabets
"No one's getting older, everybody's feeling young"
Hate me all you want, I genuinely love Kasabian. Their blend of cocky Pub Rock, odd Electropop and Psych more on the stoned than Stoner side, it just appealed to me. I can't tell why. And Secret Alphabets is one of such obscure tracks that used their magic on me. It's weird. | 11 | | Foster the People Supermodel
Pseudologia Fantastica
"Don’t be afraid of the knife, sometimes you have to cut the limb to survive"
Yeah.. I don't like Foster the People, but I strangely did like this song. I don't know why. It doesn't have a particularly catchy chorus or any outstanding instrumental work. It should have gone right over my head, but it didn't. I suppose that its growing power and oddly intense songwriting just got under my skin and forced me to like it. That's the ony explanation I have. | |

12.25.17 | This series can either become the new Don't You Forget Us, which I love, or the new monthly film discussion thread, which effectively led nowhere, because of one list I am still incapable of finishing. | neekafat
