Uni's 2017 in gigs

List number 2 of the 14 year end lists I will be posting all throughout the last two weeks of December. This time focusing on the concerts and festivals I've been to. This year was the first one, where all of the concerts I've attended have been in Czech Republic and nowhere else. Hope I'll move here eventually.
11Blood Red Shoes
Blood Red Shoes

Didn't get to see the whole performance, only the last two songs. The performed fine, I didn't think a world of it, but it was decent. Also the fact that I wasn't that big of a fan of their studio work didn't help.
10Code Orange
Forever

It seems like this band either isn't build or wasn't prepared for a big stage. They opened for System of a Down and sounded terrible. I was not a fan of their atest album Forever to begin with and now I have even more scepticism about their future. Their sound was distorted and the vocals were unintelligible. Any kind of songwriting was absolutely drowned by the bad set up and each song eventually sounded like pure noise. 5/10
9System of a Down
Toxicity

Kind of disappointed with this. Some of the problems Code Orange had on stage remained during SoaD's performance too. The heavier and louder moments sometimes became simply too noisy and unintelligible to bear. But outside of that the band delivered a cool set of songs. Nothing unusual, just an okay show. 6/10
8Sting
57th & 9th

Actually good performance. I wasn't very enthusiastic about him, since I'm far from being a fan, but he was around and I thought why the fuck not. And honestly, even his weakest songs sound heavier and much more enjoyable live. Not that I loved his show, I had a shitty place to stand, so I could only observe a tiny part of the stage and a large screen from an uncomfortable angle. In spite of that, he delivered everything with passion and masterful dedication. The sound was good, the performance was decent. It is what it is. 7/10
7Kasabian
For Crying Out Loud

Now, talking about flashiness, Kasabian delivered a hell of an all-out-there show. It was really more of a lasershow and a danceparty than it was a concert. Some of the tracks came off a bit too flat, in my opinion. And not all of the tracks were winners, but Tom Meighan's energetic performance kept me hooked all the time. So I danced and jumped with everyone else. Autosynchronisation with the crowd does its magic, I guess. 7/10
6Rammstein
Liebe Ist Für Alle Da

It's Ramm-fucking-stein! They can't possibly fuck anything up. It's your usual set of insane costumes and flamethrowers. It was really good. 8/10
5The Veils
Total Depravity

Given the fact that I went on that festival because of these guys I had m hopes extremely high. Though they had a late start, so the performance was cut short, boy did they deliver. I presume some hits had to be cut, because of the time (like Another Night on Earth and Iodine & Wine), but what they gave they played perfectly. Some nice mild vocal, refrain and lyrical changes to show everyone their musical versatility, it was really cool. No complains, outside of the late start. 8/10
4Birth Of Joy
Get Well

Fucking killed. I didn't know these guys until literally an hour or two before their performance. It was on a festival, so I just went there in the middle of the day and watched whatever there was. I looked them up on Bandcamp and thought that their music was pretty good. But then live, their energy and enthusiasm simply engulfed me. Nobody there knew them (a couple of folks tops, but not a lot) and these guys made everyone lose their shit. Great sound, great bloodpumping energy, great performance. 9/10
3Young Fathers
White Men Are Black Men Too

Let's state the obvious right from the get-go; these guys are awesome in every shape or form. They played their set basically non-stop and pumped everyone up every time. No duds, no mistakes. Nothing too flashy or extravagant, just a truly fantastic performance and some of the coolest on-stage dancing I've ever seen. Besides, I got to shake Kayus Bankole's hand afterwards, which was cool. 9/10
2Protomartyr
Relatives In Descent

"...this time of day, if I seem a little sluggish... blame the alcohol."

Pretty much what you'd expect. Joe Casey, looking like Winnie the Pooh didn't get over his midlife crisis that easily, giving about as much fucks as a coced up frog-looking cynic like him can. The drums as insanely sharp as it can possibly get. Vocals a little drowned, but still intelligible. Overall, pretty damn great. No complaints at all, apart from the mic that kept falling out. 9/10
1Metz
Strange Peace

Pure noise! This has been some of most insane fuckery I've experienced all year. The guitars were piercing, the vocals shredding, the drums crushing. And the people? Let's just say that a lunatic had a child with a madman. These fabulous bastards sprung out on the stage and played pretty much non-stop, all the while savagely destroying your eardrums. It didn't matter that the songs weren't the catchiest or that the mixing wasn't the most intelligible. What mattered was the raw energy put into it with all the psychotic intensity on the instrumentation. I couldn't help myself and jumped straight into the obligatory mosh pit that eventually seemed to have devoured the entire hall. Fucking awesome! 10/10
