TheArtofTheGanja
09.10.23 | none of these are post-grunge |
JDubb
09.10.23 | Ummm… I see where ur going. temporally, these may be”post grunge”. But several of these aren’t technically post grunge (the genre). 3 is nu metal at its best/peak. And 17 is more early post hardcore (like Far, Quicksand and Handsome). |
DarkSideOfLucca
09.10.23 | Siamese Dream was fucking 1993 and that's post grunge? lol |
Valzentia
09.10.23 | 8 is more like indie poser bullshit [2]
also Boulevard of Broken Dreams is more post-grunge than Whatsername |
JDubb
09.10.23 | Did I mention that I detest post grunge! I usually equate that genre to Creed, Puddle of Mud, Tonic, Matchbox 20, 3 Doors Down, Cake, etc. several of the bands on this list would fall under 90’s punk and alternative. |
mryrtmrnfoxxxy
09.10.23 | lmao did you just say cake. huh |
mryrtmrnfoxxxy
09.10.23 | leave cake out of this |
oisincoleman64
09.10.23 | "Siamese Dream was fucking 1993 and that's post grunge? lol"
post-grunge started in the early 90s pretty much as soon as grunge was big enough to be commercialized |
oisincoleman64
09.10.23 | "Did I mention that I detest post grunge! I usually equate that genre to Creed, Puddle of Mud, Tonic, Matchbox 20, 3 Doors Down, Cake, etc. several of the bands on this list would fall under 90’s punk and alternative."
this is the issue, people have such a negative connotation with post-grunge cause they think it just means butt rock and dont want to apply it to any "respectable" music |
oisincoleman64
09.10.23 | "And 17 is more early post hardcore (like Far, Quicksand and Handsome)."
there's honestly a lot of shared DNA between post-hardcore and grunge/post-grunge, even an album like The Colour and The Shape is deeply inspired by phxc |
ArsMoriendi
09.10.23 | My Own Worst enemy is just pop punk what do you mean?
Today is closer to actual grunge. I mean how could post grunge even exist before 1995? |
EoinCofa
09.10.23 | Gotta be a joke |

09.10.23 | white light white heat is the lost post grunge grail |
hillbillyag
09.10.23 | I see where you are coming from with this list, but it seems like you are just equating any rock-ish music after the early 90's as post grunge? You don't agree with the poster who named Cake do you? What is your definition of Grunge? Post Grunge? |
bellovddd
09.10.23 | 20 is the goods |

Never heard of Cake being considered post-grunge, but ok lol |
JDubb
09.10.23 | May detest it, but also thankful for post grunge. Really pushed me into metal (the alternative to the alternative) at the time - Pantera, Sepultura, Stuck Mojo, etc. |
JDubb
09.10.23 | …and Cake was feeding off the success of grunge and alternative, just like the others noted above. same people listening to them were listening to the above - and Jars of Clay, DMB, Blues Traveller, and more I would rather not recall. Derivative times. |

oisincoleman64
09.10.23 | "My Own Worst enemy is just pop punk what do you mean?" That song is not punk at all, people just started equating all power pop infused alt rock to pop punk at some point
|
oisincoleman64
09.10.23 | "but it seems like you are just equating any rock-ish music after the early 90's as post grunge?" Definitely not there's heaps of rock 90s and onward that has nothing to do with the sound |
oisincoleman64
09.10.23 | I mean when you consider how massive of a shift Nevermind caused it makes sense how much of alt rock onward was influenced by grunge, it became the standard |
oisincoleman64
09.10.23 | "I mean how could post grunge even exist before 1995?"
Candlebox, Collective Soul, The Posies, Bush? |
oisincoleman64
09.10.23 | All I'm saying is you could put a gravely voice no name Eddie Vedder impersonator over any of these instrumentals and no one would argue they're post-grunge |
TheArtofTheGanja
09.10.23 | I would argue the lack of a Scott Stapp or Chad Kroeger-esque singer on these songs is precisely what doesn’t make them post grunge. It’s kind of an indispensable aspect of the sound |
oisincoleman64
09.10.23 | I think that's a stigma that happened over time because it's hard for a lot of people not to notice (and grow a distaste for) and that's coloured people's idea of the genre, when post-grunge was first coined it wasn't used nearly with as much disdain, there's no shortage of post-grunge bands who have vocalists who don't fall into the stereotype such as Local H or even Foo Fighters tbh, I don't find Dave Grohl to be very similar vocally to Scott or Chad but for whatever Foo Fighters are the only band people actually like that isn't off limits when it comes to the label, I suppose it's because of Dave's past in Nirvana and the fact they came at just the right time before post-grunge was a dirty word |
Snake.
09.10.23 | "coloured people's idea of the genre"
might wanna edit this asap |

09.10.23 | I just imagined Eddie Vedder blaring "coloured people's idea of the genre"
|
JDubb
09.10.23 | Foo Fighters, as they were initially all Dave Grohl by himself, seemed to have more street cred; he was a member of Nirvana at their peak. The others (the Scotts and Chads. Bush) though - they jumped on the bandwagon. And they never had enough musical ability (past a few open chords and power chords) to expand their sound. Nickelback sound about as derivative today as they did back then. |

Pikazilla
11.01.23 | hey at least i'll admit that a lot of the music i listen to is irrelevant
grunge was a mistake and the 90s were by far the worst period in guitar music |

11.01.23 | 90s guitar music fucked, but grunge is an angsty glorification of butt rock and ain't the reason why |
Mort.
11.01.23 | yeah ive always struggled to get into grunge |
oisincoleman64
11.01.23 | "If Nirvana has post-grunge songs wtf IS post-grunge" a more streamlined and accessible version of grunge, let's not act like some of Nirvana's bigger songs weren't noticeably more poppy than the grunge that preceded it |
ArsMoriendi
11.01.23 | Grunge is already accessible as fuck
Might as well call all of Nevermind post-grunge, which would just be ironic because it’s the card carrier of what grunge is and it’s essentially a pop rock album |
MoM
11.01.23 | @Ars
Agreed. The whole list is pretty crack-smoked |
ArsMoriendi
11.01.23 | Honestly Television were apparently playing songs from Marquee Moon as early as like 1973, before The Clash even formed and their performances are credited as inspiring Patti Smith to record Horses in 1975, so if Television are post punk, than post punk predates punk |
MeatSalad
11.01.23 | Good grunge is v good but like a lot of lesser guitar genres, there's very little actual goodness to dig into
Nirvana is good, cobain was a real one |
ArsMoriendi
11.01.23 | Idk GhandhiLion would prob say Television are art punk and not post punk so it depends if you agree with him or not
Where’d pigglesteins comments go whoa boo |
