10.28.18 | black jackson kv2

pizzamachine
10.28.18 | You can shred on an acoustic, it don’t matter |
Gnocchi
10.28.18 | Depends on what’s important to you and where you’re located? I mean I’d love to get my hands on some Kiesels but Ornsby is much more local and as far as I can tell a better make.
My next lot will be fanned fret until I can set up to build my own |

10.28.18 | I'd jay a Dean V, but a sharp looking one not the dumb rounded one

10.28.18 | Get any schecter :3 |
XingKing
10.28.18 | You didn't mention your budget, which is a huge factor |
G0atC0re
10.28.18 | under 1000? Schecter is unbeatable as far as value for money.
between 1000-2000? ESP LTD, Ibanez or PRS maybe.
depends what style/shape you like though really. Lots of options. |
DrGonzo1937
10.28.18 | You can never go wrong with a Fender Squire |
BlackwaterPork
10.28.18 | Go for ESP |
Madbutcher3
10.28.18 | for kinda edgy shapes i see no reason not to go for a jackson. there are warriors and stuff secondhand which will be decent quality and not too much cash
be a bit cautious around stuff with licensed floyd roses and stuff. normally they're okay on Ibanez guitars and some old brands (Vester) but on newer stuff basically avoid stuff that isn't at least a Floyd Rose special |
garas
10.28.18 | For a lower budget: Harley Benton guitars!
They're very cheap, and good in quality - made in Germany. I own some Harley Benton guitars (and bass too), and I can highly recommend them for a first one.
Check out the heavy guitar section at the thomann website! |

10.28.18 | First of all, congrats for deciding to start playing a musical instrument. The feeling when learning even the basics is quite unique and it certainly pays off all the trouble you've been through.
I would advise you to try different guitars to see what fits you best. Not everyone feels comfortable with a Gibson Les Paul. I've tried several models, mostly Gibson guitars, (flying V, Les Paul, SG, Jackson, Stratocasters), and i always find myself returning to the first guitar I bought, a Squier.
I don't how much you intend to spend, but I would advise you to start with something cheap. Even the most expensive guitars will not sound better if you haven't mastered the instrument. There are subtle details that give away the differences, but only a trained ear will be able to spot them right away.
Same goes for your amp. A good amplifier is even more important than the actual guitar imo, and Valve Amps offer the best sound. They are nonetheless noisy and expensive. For starters, a digital amp (around 30-50 watts) is the best choice. |

10.28.18 | Find a drummer, guitarist, and vocalist. ;) |

10.28.18 | if you want edgy shapes ABSOLUTLEY go for any one of the B.C. Rich guitars |
Middle18
10.28.18 | Jackson randy Rhoads flying V cant beat it |
Sevengill
10.28.18 | thanks for the pointers! I'll take a look at those brands and models and see what has the right sound and feel I'm looking for. good call on the amp, R&MJ. |
budgie
10.28.18 | are you not already a guitarist just looking for a more ergonomic neck or are you starting out new altogether? |
THVRTVVN
10.28.18 | go literally anywhere else for advice if all these morons are gonna tell y ou is "any schecter" or "you can never go wrong with a squire" lmao |
Sevengill
10.28.18 | I play keys and drums. took a semester of guitar lessons in college but I'm tired of synthesizing guitar lines for my projects, you know? |
budgie
10.28.18 | in that case you absolutely should go to guitar stores and spend time with as many electric guitars as you can get your hands on. i still say the Jackson KV2 is the ultimate metal guitar but i'd hesitate to recommend it as a beginner's, or entry guitar, though if you do see one at a store definitely mess around with it |
Tyler.
10.28.18 | play a real instrument |
THVRTVVN
10.28.18 | yea |
foxblood
10.28.18 | jackson or ibanez, some of their older guitars can have 'unorthodox body shapes' |
bloc
10.28.18 | Don't be afraid of Indonesian or Korea made guitars. Over the past few years their QC has gotten really good. For brands, all you need are Ibanez, Jackson, LTD, and Schecter. Good bang for buck, especially Schecter as of late. |
WatchItExplode
10.28.18 | Get a shitty acoustic with high action and play it until your fingers bleed then you can get an electric |
bloc
10.28.18 | Aye that's always a good primer |
bloc
10.28.18 | Assuming that's what the dude above meant, I also second solid state amps. They are not the crap they once were. There is a great selection out there for a fraction of the price of tube amps and perhaps even more versatility. |
rockandmetaljunkie
10.28.18 | "KV2 is the ultimate metal guitar"
Sorry Budgie, but there is no such thing as the "ultimate metal guitar". |
rockandmetaljunkie
10.28.18 | That is a stupid advertisment trick used by sellers to attract clueless kids and get them to buy more expensive guitars for no particular reason. |
rockandmetaljunkie
10.28.18 | I can elaborate on that if you want |
rockandmetaljunkie
10.28.18 | @Sevegill
Bout that digital amp i mentioned, try a Roland digital amp. They are perfect for beginners. |
lalchimiste
10.28.18 | I definitely not a gear person, but be sure to get one with scale length that feels right to you as shorter will be easier for a beginner and longer a different tone.
Most importantly, with all the VST's available, I feel that even with an OK guitar and no physical amp, you can get a really nice sound without spending a lot of money. Check out Amplitube or similar softwares, it's great you can setup pedals, cabs/amp combos, EQ, microphones positioning ETC. |
budgie
10.28.18 | "Sorry Budgie, but there is no such thing as the "ultimate metal guitar"."
it's pretty clearly opinion |
DominionMM1
10.28.18 | the problem with v shaped guitars is that they're a pain in the ass to play sitting down |
DominionMM1
10.28.18 | i would recommend just going to music stores and trying things out
to me, feel and playability are the most important things. you can mod a lot of the hardware so i wouldn't sweat that as much. |
budgie
10.29.18 | i've gotten so used to playing with a v sitting down that playing with a les paul is irritating and awkward
|
Sevengill
10.30.18 | if anyone's curious, I ended up with a Dean VMNT (Mustaine) Signature model in translucent grey. Used but no visible wear, $499. So far so good. |
madrigal30
10.30.18 | Schecter. |
DungeonBoy
10.30.18 | I love that your first guitar is a flying V m/ those are sick though, you'll love those active EMGs |
iglu
10.30.18 | metal guitars are gei |
lalchimiste
10.30.18 | Yeah that's metal cause I can tell you playing Under A freezing Moon with an epiphone lespaul standard isn't very kvlt haha |
Sevengill
10.30.18 | under a freezing moon
is that a mashup of darkthrone and mayhem |
bloc
10.30.18 | Oooh, interesting first choice. How are you playing it? Like seated and in classical position because it's a V? I actually play seated with a strap, so when it's time to stand up, the feeling doesn't change. |
Relinquished
10.30.18 | gotta stay strapped |
budgie
10.30.18 | i had a dean VMNT1 for a while. the frets are sooo tall!
"I love that your first guitar is a flying V m/ those are sick though, you'll love those active EMGs"
i don't think it has EMGs |
DungeonBoy
10.30.18 | WHA? dude you're right, I saw a pic, and was like oh that's the unmistakable black box, but turns out they are "Dave Mustaine Duncan Live Wire Pickups" still Active, but curious how they compare |
budgie
10.30.18 | i didn't like the live wires on my vmnt1 BUT i hate EMGs so not the best reference |
Rowhaus
10.30.18 | get a Jackson breh |
bloc
10.30.18 | "I recommend Ran guitars as a first choice."
Lmao |

10.30.18 | Can’t go wrong with a Jackson Warrior |
SitarHero
10.30.18 | Whatever you get, make sure it has 9 strings. You might not think you need all those strings now, but give it a couple of years. |
Madbutcher3
10.30.18 | don't waste your money on a digital amp. if you have an iphone or something just get ampkit or BIAS instead, better sound quality, nowhere near as cumbersome, cheaper, more variety usually as well.
@budgie what kind of problem do you have with live wires? i was a little intrigued by them cus they sorta get advertised as being like JBs but with a higher output, which sounds handy |
lalchimiste
10.31.18 | @Seven
lol damn didn't even realize I wrote that.. |
budgie
10.31.18 | @madbutcher - they do one thing really well, but that's it, they don't really have the dynamics to play around with. also they have a very static sound.. get your hands on a guitar with active pups and you will get what i mean. i know a lot of people like cleans on active pups but i've always thought them crazy.. in the end it's personal preference. i guess, they remind me of a trigger drumset - which you can do crazy stuff on - but a lot of stuff you can't really do on either, like, you know, the dynamics of different volume and attack and intensities, really
also they have a really weird sterile clinical sound that i've never really been satisfied messing around with
edit - i see you're talking about live wires and not actives in general - i didn't like the sound of my VMNT1 at all (out of my JCM 800). to this day my favorite pickups are the seymour duncans in the jackson KV2 |
DominionMM1
10.31.18 | jb/jazz? |
beefshoes
10.31.18 | Get a bass instead |
Sevengill
10.31.18 | my fingertips are so numb and sore
but I must carry on |
GhostB1rd
10.31.18 | 9 strings are for pussies. Imagine how stupid you'd look next to a guy with 10 strings. |
Sevengill
10.31.18 | 10 strings and an amp that goes to 11 |
GhostB1rd
10.31.18 | No that's fucking gay. |
SitarHero
10.31.18 | Actually strings in general are passe. Keytars are the future. |
rockandmetaljunkie
10.31.18 | 9 strings are for pussies
So, Iommi was a pussy ? Some folks can't handle the tension of a 10 string gauge |
Madbutcher3
10.31.18 | @budgie yeh i've used EMGs and they're not really my thing but I get some use from them for specific styles. i've got a guitar with EMGs in and they're fine for stereotypical death metal type tones and handle low tunings pretty well.
Probably my favourite metal pickups are the Super Distortion and the SH-6. The latter cleans up surprisingly well, especially on the neck, and the former has a nice mix of output and versatility |
Madbutcher3
10.31.18 | also @rockandmetaljunkie idk if you're meming or not but he means 9 string guitars, not 9 gauge strings. pretty sure nobody really hates on those |
DungeonBoy
10.31.18 | Best decision of my life was switching from 9's to 10's. Cuts through better, and less broken strings #slinkylife |
bloc
10.31.18 | I feel like I'm the only guy on the planet who likes EMGs haha. I have always liked the compression they provide with high gain tones. Although the best thing are passives that compress like actives, like my Bare Knuckle Black Hawks |
Sevengill
10.31.18 | "Keytars are the future"
AX-Synth is my main rig

DungeonBoy
10.31.18 | @bloc, that's cause you play that modern metal garbage.. j/k bro I love my EMG 60/81 loaded Eclipse. Rocks hard as nails, but probably wouldn't use it for lofi black metal. Jamming along to Whoracle though is m/ |
lalchimiste
10.31.18 | then I bet one day you try to make those 2+ tone bends like Gilmour and you regret your 10s as you watch your fingers bleed lol ;). Reading this thread makes me feel like I know nothing about gear and what I am doing with this instrument |
lalchimiste
10.31.18 | by the way that Priest cover was so cool, that arpegiatted lead and those whammy dives were killer! I just got syntheducated |
DungeonBoy
10.31.18 | "one day you try to make those 2+ tone bends" uh do you even whammy bar dude?
Also freakin Gilmour is king of the bends. |
Realm
10.31.18 | Agile(rondomusic) is a good alternative to some of these for the price. You can’t go wrong with Jackson or ESP ltd for metal I guess. I recommend getting an old peavey or a solid state orange on the used. |
lalchimiste
10.31.18 | Lol I don't even dare going past full step bends and tbh I avoid anything technical cause I realized I plateaued at a very average player level. I just hope one day I'll wake up and suddenly be able to shred like Azagthoth or Chuck like magick |
osmark86
10.31.18 | spend spend spend |
bloc
10.31.18 | Excellent call on Agile, totally forgot about them. Shit they might be the best bang for your buck in the game right now, now that I think about it...
Lol Dung I read your first words and was about to get super defensive. Yeah your Eclipse/EMG combo is a certified classic. |
budgie
10.31.18 | "Probably my favourite metal pickups are the Super Distortion"
i have a lot of love for super distortions! ran with them for a long time when i started guitar because ace frehley was well known for using them in his les pauls. great sounding pups. |
Sevengill
10.31.18 | dive bombs are where it's at. |
