10 | | Isaiah Rashad The House Is Burning
4.19/5
Smooth jazzy rap - Isaiah is back and just as good as he was when he started off. really flows well together and is melodically pretty impressive. lil uzi vert feature is not bad either. not much else to say, this is just an overall solid project! |
9 | | The Spirit Of The Beehive Entertainment, Death
4.22/5
This album is WACKY and really abstract, hard to pin down in genres but it definitely feels experimental, with some shoegaze, punk, electropop and emo thrown in. Really glitchy and fidgety album that is hard to take in all at once, but I personally adore this albums ambition. |
8 | | James Blake Friends That Break Your Heart
4.24/5
This album is really haunting and minimal and I really appreciate his knack for vocal production as it is on full display on this project. The album loses its energy about 3/4ths the way through, but all the features and singles are incredible, with Life is not the same being my favorite. |
7 | | Brockhampton Roadrunner: New Light, New Machine
4.27/5
Such a powerful album yet this record doesn't have as much replay value as their previous records. In its entirety, however, this album is really impressive and lyrically a lot more vulnerable which I appreciate. hard for this collective to release a bad album and Roadrunner is no exception |
6 | | Tyler, the Creator Call Me If You Get Lost
4.31/5
I personally loved this project a lot more than IGOR, albeit not as much as Flower Boy. this record has some really hype songs and incredible storytelling, but the album does run a bit long and the constant DJ commentary can get a bit tiring but overall a very solid product and melding of the different styles Tyler has been exploring recently. |
5 | | A Great Big Pile of Leaves Pono
4.51/5
such a chill math rock/emo band that has landed comfortable in the broad "indie rock" catagory. this album picks up right where their 2012 release left off, letting baritone vocals sweep across lush drumming and twinkly riffs. was a really good late summer/fall album but still is a cozy winter listen |
4 | | Tigers Jaw I Won't Care How You Remember Me
4.58/5
gotta have a flagship emo record in my top 10 and honestly this album returns to the band's roots in a really beautiful way. the fuzzy guitars seen on Charmer are back and the pop punk/emo influences are much more apparent on this compared to their last release. feel good emo right here |
3 | | Mild High Club Going Going Gone
4.61/5
I swear the dude behind this project probably decided to let his fanbase know that not only can he produce some really lovely modern psych rock tunes, but he can also write some insanely intricate jazz compositions. melding the two styles, this albums is an incredible listen front to back and weaves in some amazing piano/brass instrumentation |
2 | | Baby Keem The Melodic Blue
4.69/5
this project is just so much fun, baby keem and kendrick is such a cool combo and baby keem holds his own on most of these songs. this is my most listened to album of 2021 and except for pink panties, all the songs on this relatively large project are very good. melodic trap/pop rap done right! |
1 | | Mick Jenkins Elephant In The Room
4.72/5
smooth beats, jazzy instrumentation, silky smooth bars/melodies - this is easily one of the best rap projects of 2021 and my personal favorite for the year. lyrically, mick jenkins does not hold back on several race issues and constant police brutality, making this an exciting listen as his lyrics are easily the best he's done since the water[s] |
