2012: Top 10 Songs from the Billboard Hot 100 Year-End Chart

Okay, this was a tough list to put together; there were a lot of really annoying songs layered upon one another in 2012. I often found myself hoping for something to be even remotely enjoyable, with a good chorus or anything, but there definitely wasn't much to choose from. A lot of these songs I was (surprisingly) already familiar with; but, upon hearing them again, my hatred for them was only heightened even more so. Hell, even songs that I thought I enjoyed back then, such as "Mercy" and "Drank in my Cup", ended up being vile and mean-spirited wastes of my time upon revisiting. I don't even think this year deserves an honourable mentions section, because this year was just horrendous. This was an endurance test.
10Linkin Park
Living Things

#100: "Burn it Down" - Thank God for you, Linkin Park. In a sea of hits ranging from abysmal to just plain boring, somehow you managed to pierce through with a track that I don't mind. It's a decent track, but a lot of my problems with this song arise from my current issues with the band itself. My biggest gripe with this song, and Linkin Park in general, is how they rely too heavily on lead vocalist Chester Bennington. He's an okay vocalist, but I find that every time I listen to a new Linkin Park song nowadays, it sounds as if they're trying to make another "In the End" style hit, and I kind of hated that song (hearing it on rock radio stations almost everyday didn't help either). "Burn it Down" definitely tries to emulate that past hit and only received modest success, it's a good song, but very cookie-cutter, there just wasn't any risk put into it which makes it feel very vanilla.
9B.o.B
Strange Clouds

#80: "So Good" - Here's a very underrated hip-hop (or pop-hop) artist. All of the singles I've heard from him, and especially his debut album, have a great wealth of charm crafted throughout. This song is no different. Just a delightful little rap song that avoids pointless profanity in favour of clever rhymes: "she says that I'm her favourite 'cause she admires the art / Michelangelo with the flow, Picasso with the bars / she's well put together like a piece by Gershwin / Renaissance style, tonight is picture perfect". B.o.B. brings to mind an artist like Andre 3000, they're both brilliant, super-fast lyricists, it'd be really nice to hear them both collaborate on a song/album in the future; they'd be great duelling back-and-forth between one-another, similar to Method Man and Redman, I'm sure that they'd only bring out the best in each other. "So Good" is a very pleasant surprise from an otherwise boring, mean-spirited year for hip-hop.
8Trey Songz
Chapter V

#77: "Heart Attack" - Never have I laughed harder at an opening for any song... ever. This is hilarious. I almost didn't even include this track on here, but I kind of fell in love with it due to one of the most awkward, yet awesome, sounding deliveries of the sound: "OH! WO! OH!". Other than that, there isn't much else to like about this track. The singer sounds like a better version of Chris Brown/Jason DeRulo (not the brightest of compliments), the beat has an annoying bubblegum/pop vibe woven throughout (which is really out of place) and the song is just too pedestrian to care about. This wouldn't have even made it to the honourable mentions I did for any of the previous two lists, that's how badly 2012 sucked. Trey Songz, thanks for a momentarily amusing detour. You made me laugh... and I want you yelling "OH! WO! OH!" as my ringtone.
7Coldplay
Mylo Xyloto

#69: "Paradise" - "You know how I know you're gay?" Yeah, yeah, yeah, whatever. Here's yet another song that just barely etched its way onto the list. Probably one of the weakest songs of their entire discography, "Paradise" suffers largely from having a very bland chorus that almost immediately made me give up on the song: "PARA-PARA-PARADISE! PARA-PARA-PARADISE!". Oddly I don't get the sense of euphoria that they were clearly going for when the word "paradise" is repeated over-and-over again. It's just dull. However, Chris Martin's vocals are really great whenever the chorus isn't up, the electronica-beats are fairly well-crafted and the guitar solo after the final chorus is pretty excellent. All-in-all, this song isn't as bad as I originally pictured it, I was never the biggest Coldplay fan, but this is clearly a diamond in the rough when it compared to the rest of the trite rubbish that is the Hot 100 of 2012.

#65: "Let's Go" (feat. Ne-Yo) - "Feel So Close" and "We Found Love" just sucked. Both songs were glorified commercials for whatever materialistic thing is trending at the time of success. Seriously, going to the clubs to hear those songs (repeatedly) was absolutely nauseating to say the least. So why couldn't they have played "Let's Go" more instead? I don't know, maybe it's due to the fact that people hate feeling fired-up and ready to take on the world? I don't know. The point is that this song blew me away and I was not expecting to enjoy this EDM track as much as I did, it's just an extremely uplifting song that makes me wanna go out and do stuff; which is why this genre exists in the first place, it's meant to be music that wakes people up (not put them to sleep).
5Adele
21

#43: "Someone Like You" - Of all the songs released during this dreadful year, this is the only one on the entire Hot 100 that continues to send shivers down my spine. This song is beautiful, Adele is beautiful, her voice is beautiful, her songs have an uncommon power that is not often known to the Billboard charts/listeners. Just wow. I don't have much to say about this song because it speaks so brilliantly for itself, it's just a wonderful ballad about trying to move on from a previous lover all while wishing him/her well in the end. An inspiring, ultimately gripping song that never fails to impress me. I could not speak more highly of it, it's just perfect.
4Jay-Z and Kanye West
Watch the Throne

#40: "N!#%@$ in Paris" - While this track may be far from perfection, it still reminds audiences of why Jay-Z and Kanye West are still relevant to this day: they're hard-working musicians who always strive to do their very best work no matter what the media has to say about it. This is just a great rapping duo backed up by an unbelievably addicting beat. Fast-rhymes, undying confidence, a fantastic Will Ferrell sample (from Blades of Glory) and a rapid-fire pace make this song a piece of cake to get into. Praise Yeezus.
3Alex Clare
The Lateness of the Hour

#30: "Too Close" - A strangely soulful slice of electronic pop. Too bad this vocalist wasn't in a folk/soul band that allowed him more room to exercise his vocal abilities because he sounds phenomenal on this track, too bad the middle-of-the-road dubstep beats keep it from becoming something more than "that soulful dubstep song that I like". It's far better and much more restrained than Hot 100 fodder from Imagine Dragons and Pitbull, but I wish I could say more in its favour. For this song, it feels like there's a far better version lying on the cutting room floor somewhere. It genuinely feels like a producer stepped into the recording of this song and said: "You know what will make this song sell to the kids? Dubstep.". Ugh, let me know when this annoying gimmick is over (probably never now that it's only just begun).
2Neon Trees
Picture Show

#22: "Everybody Talks" - Next to "Somebody Like You", this may be my favourite track off of 2012's Hot 100. This is just a charming song and music video all-around. The chorus is fantastic, the vocalist is terrific (especially on the line "it started with a whisper" which leads into the excellent chorus) and the music video is a fun B-movie trailer parody that makes me think of the 90s/early 2000s (mostly Alien Ant Farm with the single "Movies", a song that they kept trying to sell people on by making a great, albeit expensive, music video for it). So this is what a fun hit song sounds like? After listening to rubbish like "We Are Young" and
"Drive By", this heartfelt indie pop single reinvigorated me and left me feeling pleasant all over again. Keep up the good work, Neon Trees.
1Gotye
Making Mirrors

#1: "Somebody That I Used to Know" (feat. Kimbra) - Wow, that was a big leap from #22 to #1; trust me when I say that there's a lot of miserable dreck in-between. While I knew that this song was a huge hit at the time, I had no earthly idea that it'd be sitting at the top spot. And what a pleasant surprise! This is just a simple but extremely effective break-up song that lets you relate to both sides of the equation, as opposed to the usual break-up track that has a very singular perspective and usually paints the ex-partner in question as somebody to hate. I really love this song, though it is undeniably cheesy, especially during that chorus, it is nevertheless very enjoyable all the way through thanks to a pair of stunning vocal performances.
