Saw Last Dillinger Show/Favorite Songs
The Dillinger Escape Plan are probably my favorite band and it really hurt to see them go. I saw them play in Poughkeepsie NY last year with two of my friends. Went with those same friends to Terminal 5 for the very last show. They played lots of Dissociation material at this show, I would've far preferred to see the other two shows where there played Irony is a Dead Scene and lots of older material. That being said, it was a fantastic show and I will never forget it.
I found it too hard to rank their albums, because they're all so diverse and have their own strong points. Option Paralysis and Dissociation are probably at the bottom and Calculating is probably at the top. These are just 20 of my favorite songs, in chronological order. |
1 | | The Dillinger Escape Plan Under the Running Board
The Mullet Burden - Absolutely brutal song. The shriek before the breakdown makes it all the more terrifying. |
2 | | The Dillinger Escape Plan Calculating Infinity
Sugar Coated Sour - One of my favorite openers of all time. While 43% Burnt is their signature song live, this song crushed me when I saw it performed. |
3 | | The Dillinger Escape Plan Calculating Infinity
Jim Fear - This song blew my mind when I first heard it. I had only known the first two songs from this album, and when this track started up it was a total mindfuck |
4 | | The Dillinger Escape Plan Calculating Infinity
The Running Board - Feels like a horror movie. The perfect centerpiece of Calculating Infinity. |
5 | | The Dillinger Escape Plan Calculating Infinity
4th Grade Dropout - One of their most underrated songs. Amazing climax. (Also gotta give props to Variations on a Cocktail Dress, very underrated closer). |
6 | | The Dillinger Escape Plan Irony Is a Dead Scene
When Good Dogs Do Bad Things - The whole EP is gold and one of the highlights of Patton's career. Hollywood Squares is super hardcore and Pig Latin is a great experiment, but this song makes the list because its just too insane. Might be my single favorite Dillinger song. About as proggy as they come and with a fantastic vocal performance. |
7 | | The Dillinger Escape Plan Miss Machine
Panasonic Youth - Blistering opener. Best breakdown in the history of mathcore. The barely noticeable twinkle of bells followed by the bluesy lead riff near the end signaled to fans that Miss Machine was a totally different beast than their older work. |
8 | | The Dillinger Escape Plan Miss Machine
Sunshine the Werewolf - Another contender for their best song. The opening chords and the 'cry your eyes bloodshot' scream segue into a mathy rampage. Then the rug is pulled out from under the listener as the band performs one of the most epic sections I have ever heard in a song. |
9 | | The Dillinger Escape Plan Miss Machine
Van Damsel - Their heaviest song, severely underrated. Greg sounds like he's frothing at the mouth. Shame they don't play it live more often. |
10 | | The Dillinger Escape Plan Miss Machine
Baby's First Coffin - Along with Sunshine and We Are the Storm, Baby's First Coffin juxtaposes blistering riffage with a steadily building jazzier section. This song contains probably the best clean section in any Dillinger song. |
11 | | The Dillinger Escape Plan Ire Works
Fix Your Face - Panasonic Youth 2.0, but with a decidedly more conventional hard rock sound. "You're like a deer in the headlights baby..." The best heavy track on Ire Works, followed closely by Horse Hunter. |
12 | | The Dillinger Escape Plan Ire Works
Dead As History - Dillinger drop their mathcore shredding for an Autechre/Squarepusher tinged ballad, then expand on it with a huge melodic rock section. Signature Ire Works track, sounds a lot like Nine Inch Nails meets Faith No More. |
13 | | The Dillinger Escape Plan Ire Works
Mouth of Ghosts - Easily the best track on Ire Works, the band goes full prog rock. Starting with a very romantic piano intro, the band progresses into a latin groove and then a massive ending chorus. No mathcore here, just fantastic playing and songwriting. |
14 | | The Dillinger Escape Plan Option Paralysis
Farewell, Mona Lisa - While Option Paralysis is my least favorite Dillinger album (I find the production dry and there seems to be no stylistic development), it does have its fair share of brilliant moments. This opener speaks for itself. |
15 | | The Dillinger Escape Plan Option Paralysis
Good Neighbor - Opening riff sounds a lot like We Are the Storm. Still a killer track and gets me pumped up every time. |
16 | | The Dillinger Escape Plan One of Us Is the Killer
When I Lost My Bet - A way more insane track than Prancer in my opinion. Great when performed live. |
17 | | The Dillinger Escape Plan One of Us Is the Killer
Magic That I Held You Prisoner - Short but very underrated song. The intro is ridiculously powerful. One of my favorite clean vocal performances by Puciato, with a great chord progression. |
18 | | The Dillinger Escape Plan One of Us Is the Killer
Crossburner - Slow and brooding, very epic track. Should've been the closer. |
19 | | The Dillinger Escape Plan Dissociation
Low Feels Blvd - Starts out fucking crazy but this song is notable for its jazz fusion section. Weinmann's playing evokes the styles of John McLaughlin and Robert Fripp. When the vocals come in to match the jazzy chords the song reaches another level of brilliance. |
20 | | The Dillinger Escape Plan Dissociation
Dissociation - Seeing this live with Seven Suns made it even more special to me. |
