09.17.19 | Automatic's pretty rare in the UK so manual is how I learnt. Hardest part is finding the biting point of the vehicle with the clutch, cos losing that is a pretty good way of stalling it (as is trying to move in too high a gear). It's probably elementary as well but don't try to shift up more than two gears AT MOST at a time. Some cars, even two gears is gonna make it grumpy. |

haha i actually commute 1.5 hours one way with a good deal of bumper to bumper traffic, and of course lots of hills. luckily i still have my old impreza (automatic) that i can drive in the mean time |

thanks for the words of advice. yeah tonight i plan to just ride the clutch a bit on flat ground and get familiar with the catch point without even giving gas. i did know the shift up gear thing already. although admittedly yesterday when test driving i did accidentally do 1st to 4th (woops). surprisingly didn't stall or buck |

09.17.19 | A WRX clutch isn't too hard, it's not the easiest out there but it's relatively forgiving. Then again I haven't driven one that was newer than 2012 or something so idk.
But yeah just try and find some empty parking lot and practice your taking off from a stop. That's honestly the hardest part, once you're moving you'll be fine if you're not over-thinking it. Oh and remember, neutral is your friend if you ever find yourself trying to figure out what to do next. |

09.17.19 | WRX? Rich ass
Never driven a manual trans, and never plan to. Just not practical to me in the city. |

09.17.19 | Hey unclereich here your resident wrx expert. Starting in 2015 the wrx moved to 6 speed gear box. It is extremely unforgiving in low gears as compared to previous generations. Theyve always been weird imo in 1st gear but the 2015-2019 are just ridiculous in low gears. Very jerky, very LITTLE feel. That bite you want to look for isnt there. Its not a great first manual car, it also hangs revs like CRAZY so shifting is rarely smooth on a STOCK tune.
I learned how to drive mine(2004 sti with a short shifter) in one month. That means i could comfortably get everywhere, no stalling, and smooth shifts that weren’t harming my clutch! It’s annoying, difficult, and taxes your patience. Its like being a new driver all over again.
My take: BE PATIENT, ask for help, watch YouTube, and drive everywhere. You will stall in traffic and its ok. You will get it and you will love that more than your mother. Wrxs are amazing and bloc i got a 2019 for 25000 dollars before tax. I pay 180 a month for it, very affordable.
If you have questions let me know, don’t expect to get it over night. That gearbox is very weird and you need to give it a good amount of gas in first gear to get it going. Sit in a parking lot and let the clutch out with no gas very very slowly and wait for the car to lurch forward so you know where that bite point is. Many owners have changed out the bushings so just know youre not the only one who has had trouble with that gearbox |

09.17.19 | Going from a standard to an auto is a terribly sad feeling, just no connection or control over the car. Driving in traffic with a standard sucks only because you know you’re potentially fucking your clutch up. Still prefer standard... |

09.18.19 | I was fuckin bad at it at first. It was mostly the multitasking that fucked me. But after a week or two of practice i was driving on the road, and then after a few months it started to become second nature. I drive a 2003 Ford Ranger though, so theyre not as smooth of a manual experience as a newer car. Much smaller margin for error. I drove a brand new Focus a couple of years ago and that was a fucking cakewalk compared to my Ranger.
Also drove a brand new Tacoma or Tundra, cant remember which. That was weird, it was so different. |

09.18.19 | why do Brits still drive manual, y'all still live in huts too |
Pon
09.18.19 | Hate driving automatic, pressing the throttle and feeling computers working out the clutch bite point and modulating all your inputs, can't just use mechanical drag to slow the car down, ugh. Maybe I'm just a control freak. |
Deathconscious
09.18.19 | everyone should be driving a manual. better gas mileage, transmissions last longer and are much cheaper. |
Pon
09.18.19 | tbh I can't blame Aussies for mostly driving automatics because to go literally anywhere here you have to drive |

bro why do americans always act like they're the best at everything when all they do is swim in countercurrent in all aspects compared to the rest of the world
also, everyone should drive manual imo, it teaches you to drive better and pay more attention to what you're doing. in an automatic people just put it in drive and get distracted by everything else, that's why there are so many accidents out there |
rockandmetaljunkie
09.18.19 | Manual transmission cars are the best in my experience cause you have more control on your petrol consumption. Automatic cars are easier to learn, yes, but demand more fuel and the engine overhauling intervals are shorter. Which means you have to repair your engine more often. |
rockandmetaljunkie
09.18.19 | About the driving part, it's all just practice. I struggled at first, sure, but eventually, with the right amount of practice, driving became a second nature to me. |
kenji505
09.18.19 | also for beginners trying to learn manual, practice downshifting with rev matching, your transmission will thank you later |
