Top 7 GY!BE songs

I've been listening to basically nothing but this band for about a month. Eventually, I realized that the consensus view that the first three albums > everything else is total BS. Seven songs because there are seven relevant releases.

Slow Riot For New Zero Kanada

Moya.

This track is overshadowed by BBF, but it would be great even if it were a standalone.
6Godspeed You! Black Emperor
Luciferian Towers

Anthem for No State.

Underrated album. I'm not sure if it's the lack of samples on later albums, but the music is great.

East Hastings.

This album has no weak parts, but I don't think any of the material stands out that much. It works great as a package, but that doesn't help it for the sake of this list.

Lift Your Skinny Fists Like Antennas to Heaven

Storm.

This album relies a lot on its samples, which are pretty great, but Storm is a fantastic song, too.
3Godspeed You! Black Emperor
'Allelujah! Don't Bend! Ascend!

We Drift Like Worried Fire.

Greatest songtitle oat. The drone tracks on this album are garbage, but the two real songs are so good.

BBF.

The song is great throughout. But the interview and the story behind it is actually one of the most amazing things I've ever heard.

"How long have you been writing for?"

"Since I was four."

LOL. Yes, it takes 10+ years of writing practice to rip off the lyrics of an Iron Maiden song. I'm not even sure the band knew this when they published the EP. Though, weirdly, I actually agree that the text works better as a stand-alone poem than as lyrics on Virus.

But the most hilarious thing is the part on Providence. Same guy, same interview.

"The preacher man says it's the end of time... he says that America's rivers are running dry. The interest is up, the stock market's down... you guys gotta be careful walking around here this late at night. This is the perfect place to get jumped."

You can't make this shit up. The fact that he just said this even though it made no sense in context is just too perfect.

Mladic.

Is this the most epic song that has ever been written? That ending is so majestic, like holy shit.

Ratko Mladic was this former military commander who's killed a fuckton of people. Basically committed genocide. I've watched a little of the documentaries about him. Strangely charming man. I can see how he inspired the track.

Couldn't find the sample in the documentaries, unfortunately. But one can dream.
