| Top 7 GY!BE songs
I've been listening to basically nothing but this band for about a month. Eventually, I realized that the consensus view that the first three albums > everything else is total BS.
Seven songs because there are seven relevant releases. | 7 | | Godspeed You! Black Emperor Slow Riot For New Zero Kanada
Moya.
This track is overshadowed by BBF, but it would be great even if it were a standalone. | 6 | | Godspeed You! Black Emperor Luciferian Towers
Anthem for No State.
Underrated album. I'm not sure if it's the lack of samples on later albums, but the music is great. | 5 | | Godspeed You! Black Emperor F♯ A♯ ∞
East Hastings.
This album has no weak parts, but I don't think any of the material stands out that much. It works great as a package, but that doesn't help it for the sake of this list. | 4 | | Godspeed You! Black Emperor Lift Your Skinny Fists Like Antennas to Heaven
Storm.
This album relies a lot on its samples, which are pretty great, but Storm is a fantastic song, too. | 3 | | Godspeed You! Black Emperor 'Allelujah! Don't Bend! Ascend!
We Drift Like Worried Fire.
Greatest songtitle oat. The drone tracks on this album are garbage, but the two real songs are so good. | 2 | | Godspeed You! Black Emperor Slow Riot For New Zero Kanada
BBF.
The song is great throughout. But the interview and the story behind it is actually one of the most amazing things I've ever heard.
"How long have you been writing for?"
"Since I was four."
LOL. Yes, it takes 10+ years of writing practice to rip off the lyrics of an Iron Maiden song. I'm not even sure the band knew this when they published the EP. Though, weirdly, I actually agree that the text works better as a stand-alone poem than as lyrics on Virus.
But the most hilarious thing is the part on Providence. Same guy, same interview.
"The preacher man says it's the end of time... he says that America's rivers are running dry. The interest is up, the stock market's down... you guys gotta be careful walking around here this late at night. This is the perfect place to get jumped."

You can't make this shit up. The fact that he just said this even though it made no sense in context is just too perfect. | 1 | | Godspeed You! Black Emperor 'Allelujah! Don't Bend! Ascend!
Mladic.
Is this the most epic song that has ever been written? That ending is so majestic, like holy shit.
Ratko Mladic was this former military commander who's killed a fuckton of people. Basically committed genocide. I've watched a little of the documentaries about him. Strangely charming man. I can see how he inspired the track.
Couldn't find the sample in the documentaries, unfortunately. But one can dream. | |

08.11.20 | I really like Lambs Breath tbh | Sharkattack
08.11.20 | No sleep no list | Sinternet
08.11.20 | no dead flag blues no list*
2 is 1 though | Get Low
08.11.20 | Another Gosdpeed fan who doesn't like Asunder, typical. | JohnnyoftheWell
08.11.20 | No Sleep no list [2]
Kinda amazing how this list is like 90% of their entire discog but doesn't include their best song. Nice stuff tho | Get Low
08.11.20 | Piss Crowns tho | JohnnyoftheWell
08.11.20 | Piss Crowns is a decent Loud Gratification template, but nothing you'd stick in a holy top 7 | tectactoe
08.11.20 | Storm is probably my favorite but Sleep and Like Antennas to Heaven could also be contenders. Also Dead Flag Blues. And Motherfucker == Redeemer.
Solid list, though. Hard to go wrong with these guys, honestly. | hal1ax
08.11.20 | bad | Kompys2000
08.11.20 | Accepting the tracks on F#A# and LYSF as single songs and not judging each constituent part separately is some small brain shit tee bee aytch | JohnnyoftheWell
08.11.20 | reported | dedex
08.11.20 | No Sleep no list [3]
No Dead Flag Blues no list [2] | budgie
08.11.20 | reported | pollastrerostit
08.11.20 | I always actually thought that Moya overshadowed BBF, Moya was the first Godspeed song that really fascinated me and remains one of my favourites. I used to skip BBF until they played it in a concert and oh man | Kompys2000
08.11.20 | F#A#, LYSF AND Allelujah all took a few months to grow from "ehh okay I guess" to "incredible start to finish", and I'm still waiting for Slow Riot to grow past "really quite good" | dedex
08.11.20 | Slow Riot is their best
and it's also the best EP of all time | JohnnyoftheWell
08.11.20 | Lol no, but Moya is the best song on it | dedex
08.11.20 | I do agree | pollastrerostit
08.11.20 | Slow Riot is their best
and it's also the best EP of all time
lol yes
| MrSirLordGentleman
08.11.20 | Piss Crowns Are Trebled might be my favorite GYBE song. It's on a weak album tho | siIverspawn
08.11.20 | Piss Crowns Are Trebled is would be on the list if it were a bit larger. Sleep wouldn't be, though. It's possible that it can grow on me more.
And I do like asunder. I'd say the only GY!BE release I don't really care about is Yanqui U.X.O. | siIverspawn
08.11.20 | And yeah, I couldn't name any EP that's as good as Slow Riot. Maybe in terms of the music itself, but not if you include the amazing fact that the interview is actually real. | loulou
08.11.20 | To me the four Assunder tracks is just one piece and is number 1. They always played it complete in concerts and before it was recorded it was called behemot by fans. | wojodta
08.11.20 | needs MF=R | fallenbird
08.11.20 | Disagree with the rest of the rankings but 1 is 1 and I’m so glad I’m not alone in that feeling |
