Mythodea: Albums that expand the borders of music

Seems like you're looking for very technical rythmic stuff like Autechre do, genre-defying "imaginary soundtrack" sort of work, and albums that appear like a general statement in a certain context instead of anything representative of a scene or genre. Here are some suggestions, although I wouldn't call anything of it "today's forefront music": Proem - Socially Inept Doesn't contain any vocals, but tells a very clear story anyway. It's simple on the surface and complex in the details, which gives it a very natural feel, while not falling exactly into a single genre. Matt Uelmen - Diablo 2 OST This has to be the most seamless fusion of electronic and neo-classical music I've heard so far, complex, very abstract but still fitting like a glove to the actual game. Receptor - Room 302 More mainstream than avant-garde, but at the time this seemed like the logical result of the uprise of home produced Drum & Bass, Glitch and Ambient music to me, all put into dense and eclectic EP. Doubting Thomas - The Infidel (Special Edition) Experimental ambient and dance music combined, which makes it very hard to classify, although the industrial roots of Skinny Puppy remain obvious. With its range through all kind of timbres and tempos it often seems kind of crude and brilliant at the same time and generally aiming for what many bedroom producers are trying to do right now, but in a much more professional sense. Needs to be seen in its entirety to make sense imo. Headcase - Crosseyedrabbit Again not falling into clear category, very danceable in parts but experimental at its core, with moods ranging from soft and introspective to raw and abrasive. I wished much more producers would make music in that manner, instead of going for another "dance" or "chill" album.
