Stories And Melodies

It seems that, when a band tries to compose music that tells a story, rthe outcome is always rr- or for most of the times - awesome... This rmustn't be a very innovative idea for a list, but rI ralways liked ''concept ralbums'', so I present you my findings... Please, add the ones you rknow rrand Cheers!rNote that the list is not in order ,from my favorite ones to the least rrfavorites. rNo spoilers included.
1Genesis
The Lamb Lies Down On Broadway

One of their best albums, and the only one I could actually enjoy...
2Pink Floyd
The Wall

One of my favorite albums... I know that many people despise it, but I believe that this album
is perfect from beginning to end... The suffocating atmosphere, the sense of agony and
misery and the passage to catharsis, all are given so vividly you actually feel like living it...
And the movie is great!
3Porcupine Tree
Deadwing

There was supposed to be a movie, but in the end the script was left unfinished.
The album is pure awesomeness. Even though the story is not really clear, it's
apparent that death is not an obstacle for some people to be together.
4W.A.S.P.
The Crimson Idol

The album that saved W.A.S.P.'s career, an honest work that depicts the rise and
fall of a rock star. Excellent musicianship and each track is better than the other...
5Queensryche
Operation: Mindcrime

No words needed... There was a time that these guys would bring only smiles to
our faces...
6Iron Maiden
Seventh Son of a Seventh Son

Not exactly an album with a plot, but it still counts as one. Also, one of their best.
Infinite Dreams should be called ''Metalheads' Wet Dream''
7Pain Of Salvation
One Hour By The Concrete Lake

I'm not quite sure what's going on in this album, but I've heard that it's a concept
and I happen to like it. Also, Daniel's voice in ''The Big Machine'' is something truly
exceptional...
8Dream Theater
Metropolis Pt. 2: Scenes from a Memory

A really complex story, where a man was a girl that couldn't decide which one of the two brothers
she should f... turning the one against the other... What? Silly story? Well, listen to the album...
It's definitely not a silly one!
9Haken
Aquarius

One of the greatest debut albums out there. Maturity, excellent musicianship and a
strange story of an unwanted child.
10Mastodon
Crack The Skye

Well, ''Leviathan'' and ''Blood Mountain'' are also kind of concept albums, but in my
opinion, none can reach the sense of completion that this record has. Anyhow, try to
read between the lines and learn about Skye... For those who don't know, this is a
bilateral story.
11The Devin Townsend Project
Deconstruction

A chaotic, yet interesting story, that includes a vegetarian, a hamburger, the devil
himself and many apes....Oh, don't forget the mighty masturbator...
12Ayreon
The Human Equation

Actually, every Ayreon's album is a ''metal opera'', with different vocalist for each
role, acts and scenes... This seems to be the one people like the most, but for me
anyone would do... Last year's ''The Theory of Everything'' was really good.
13Savatage
Streets: A Rock Opera

Another story about the demise of a rock star. A very good album with many touching
moments but a lot of heaviness too.
14Blind Guardian
Nightfall in Middle-Earth

These guys love Tolkien. They just love him. This album is inspired by the book
Silmarilion, and is one of my favorite from them.
15Helloween
Keeper of the Seven Keys Part I
16Helloween
Keeper of the Seven Keys Part II
17Kamelot
Epica

Okay, prepare for many Kamelot albums. This is the first part of Ariel's story, which
was heavily inspired by the tale of Faust, the poem by Goethe.
18Kamelot
The Black Halo

The story continues and ends in this album, where we learn Ariel's fate, when he
tries to fight his enemy and redeem his soul.
19Kamelot
Silverthorn

Their latest work was the first one without Roy Khan after many years... Thomas Youngblood,
Kamelot's mastermind did what he knew best: wrote a story and music for it and chose the
best replacement for Roy he could find, to sing it. It works for me.
20Opeth
Watershed

I recently learned there was a concept behind it. Don't really know what's going on.
Despite my ignorance, I still find it to be a really good album.
21Opeth
Still Life

The story behind this is very tragic, dirty and painful. The music on the other hand...
22Opeth
My Arms, Your Hearse

Wasn't going to put this one in here, but who can argue that it's not a really good
concept album? Genuine lyrics create a plot that reminds me a lot of Deadwing...
Mikael and Wilson seem to have affected the one another a lot.
23The Vision Bleak
Carpathia

Really enjoy this band, even though I prefer Stock's other band, Empyrium. The
album is really good with haunting melodies and a story that seems to be written by
Lovecraft himself...
24Trophy Scars
Holy Vacants

A weird plot and a truly inspired band. What is not to like?
25Tuomas Holopainen
Music Inspired By The Life And Times Of Scrooge

I don't believe you have to be fan of the comic to like this one. It's a tremendous
album which explains the biggest misunderstanding in the history of comics: some
guys do things for the sake of doing them, not for the reward.
26 Aphrodite's Child
666

The Apocalypse through the eyes of a progressive rock band of the 70's. Period...
