TheSonomaDude
01.23.24 | in before "who cares about the oscars"
Godzilla minus one got a nomination, that's surprising. Shin Gojira was a lot better imo |
Ryus
01.23.24 | ok we all know these awards ceremonies suck so much but this is not an atrocious list of best picture noms tbh |
JoyfulPlatypus
01.23.24 | Nominating America Ferrara but not Margot Robbie is certainly a choice |
pizzamachine
01.23.24 | I luv me nom noms |
AlexKzillion
01.23.24 | everybody bitching about no margot but where is michelle williams bruh
zero may december noms also wild |
AlexKzillion
01.23.24 | also no dua lipa nom is supremely lame, way better than the billie song |
Zac124
01.23.24 | I know animated films never get best picture noms but it is a shame The Boy and the Heron didn't get one. It fully deserves it. |
ThyCrossAwaits
01.23.24 | Can you imagine being Ryan Gosling, doing things like Drive and Blue Valentine and Blade Runner 2049 and Only God Forgives and The Big Short
And you get nominated for fucking La La Land and Barbie |
twlight
01.23.24 | barbie was terrible |
anode
01.23.24 | guys lets do an oscar live chat this year. ill bring popcorn and lube |
Trebor.
01.24.24 | Only one bad best picture nom (Maestro) which is actually quite the feat
|
TheSonomaDude
01.24.24 | i agree this year they got the nominations pretty spot on. trebor is right, i think Maestro is the only one that really doesn't fit. |
AlexKzillion
01.24.24 | would rank the best picture noms i've seen:
1a) oppenheimer
1b) american fiction
3) killers of the flower moon
4) poor things
5) barbie
---big drop---
6) maestro
gonna see opp in imax this weekend hopefully, maybe zone of interest too since its actually available in my area. holdovers is on peacock now. idk how to see past lives or anatomy of a fall |
AlexKzillion
01.24.24 | also i'm surprised to find american fiction's score was original. half assumed it was thelonious monk's music given the main character's name lol |
Wildcardbitchesss
01.24.24 | @thycross
Dude I literally mentioned that in another thread. Ryan Gosling consistently gets praise just for the wrong movies. La La Land is bullshit lol, dude has had much better performances in much better films.
I haven’t seen Barbie but I can’t imagine that’s any different.
Also shocked Leo didn’t get a nom for Killers of the Flower Moon. Idc about the rest of them but Lily Gladstone deserves the win over the rest in that category. Maybe the lady from Anatomy of a Fall could swing it for me but it’d be a crime not to give it to Lily. acting alongside fucking DiCaprio and De Niro (who were both bringing their A game) and you STILL put in the best performance, that’s really something. |
SomeCallMeTim
01.24.24 | "barbie was incredible"
agreed twilight! |
AlexKzillion
01.24.24 | gosling was the best part of barbie and i don't think the movie would work without him. iconic performance. he's prob not winning but ken feels like something that will have staying power in pop culture for decades |
Ryus
01.24.24 | zone of interest is amazing |
YoYoMancuso
01.24.24 | “zero may december noms also wild”
It got nominated for best original screenplay but pretty much every actor in it was snubbed fr |
TheSonomaDude
01.24.24 | "Also shocked Leo didn’t get a nom for Killers of the Flower Moon."
i guess i'm a lil surprised because he gets nominated for existing, but Killers was one of his less interesting performances. i'm just glad De Niro got nom'd because it's one of his best performances ever imo |
Zac124
01.24.24 | I think Di Caprio's performance was perfect for what the film and character demanded though so I think he should have at least gotten a nom. But at the same time it is nice to see other names being nommed. |
markjamie
01.24.24 | So happy Sandra Hüller got a nom for Anatomy of a Fall; she was magnificent. And yeah Zac, disappointed that The Boy and the Heron didn't get a Best Picture or Original Score nom. |
Zac124
01.24.24 | It is shame that it wasn't nominated for best picture but it was expected. Joe Hisashi definitely deserved a nom. The score in The Boy and the Heron is gorgeous. |
bellovddd
01.24.24 | I have only seen barbie in all those best pic noms lol |
TheSonomaDude
01.25.24 | my guess is it's down between Killers and Oppenheimer |
Trebor.
01.25.24 | Killers has no chance. It hasn't been doing well at the other awards shows |
PizzaBear
01.25.24 | Barbie was cute and fun and all but holy fuck is the obsessive hype around it undeserved |
zaruyache
01.25.24 | the white feminists are angry it didn't sweep the noms, it's really weird. The feminist framing about Margot's Best Actress snub is also really weird when Lily Gladstone is the first indigenous woman to be nominated for the same award lol. |
Wildcardbitchesss
01.25.24 | and not only that, but I’ll reiterate, SHE FUCKING KILLED IT. Best performance I saw in 2023
But Barbie is in that weird stage of the cultural zeitgeist where, yes the fangirls are kind of annoying when it comes to how much love the film gets, but any criticism of it at all will get you branded as some Ben Shapiro type that thinks it’s too woke or some bs. Idk from what my friends have told me, the movie just feels heavy handed in it’s social messaging. But it’s also a fucking Barbie movie. This aint an A24 film
Tbh all the conservative outrage actually makes me wanna sit down and watch it |
neekafat
01.25.24 | Just saw Zone of Interest, omfg |
Slex
01.25.24 | May December was the best movie I saw in 2023, no nom for Charles Melton is wildly egregious |
neekafat
01.25.24 | ok best picture ranking (haven't seen Anatomy yet)
1. Zone of Interest: 10/10
2. Past Lives: 9/10
3. Killers of the Flower Moon: 9/10
4. The Holdovers: 8.5/10
5. Barbie: 8/10
6. Poor Things: 8/10
7. American Fiction: 7/10
8. Oppenheimer: 7/10
9. Maestro: 6/10
|
neekafat
01.25.24 | Agreed with all the Charles Melton anger, but I really really wish Zac Efron or Teyana Taylor had even a chance at noms |
Wildcardbitchesss
01.25.24 | I’ll have to watch both. I’ve only seen a little over half the best pic noms but I have zero interest in Maestro |
Wildcardbitchesss
01.25.24 | Neeka holy shit get on Anatomy of a Fall. |
neekafat
01.25.24 | Maestro really is fine, I was surprisngly moved by some of it. Less of an ego piece for Cooper than I was expected based off of A Star Is Born, but it has some of the worst structure I've ever seen in a biopic which is saying something. if anything it's kinda a snoozer |
neekafat
01.25.24 | i will i will! |
TheSonomaDude
01.25.24 | not sure why it was just kinda understood from the beginning that beau is afraid and iron claw had no shots of any nominations. two of my favorite films of 2023 |
Wildcardbitchesss
01.25.24 | Was Iron Claw eligible? Didn’t it just come out?
Idk how Oscar noms work |
TheSonomaDude
01.25.24 | technically it should be eligible because it had its official release in November. but films also have to pay and submit an official will to compete |
neekafat
01.25.24 | Yeah it was released at the end of 2023, part of the reason it probably didn't get enough traction tho
loved that movie |
neekafat
01.25.24 | Beau Is Afraid never had a shot lol great film but that's not academy material |
TheSonomaDude
01.25.24 | it was apparently shortlisted in the best visual effects category. guess the giant penis monster won a few people over. |
neekafat
01.25.24 | hahahahaha i wouldve loved it to get a nom there, for the budget the effects are especially impressive |
unclereich
01.25.24 | should tell you how bad Napoleon was if Joaquin didn't even get a nomination lol. Leo not getting one either is a shock. the holdovers was slightly overrated but Giamatti winning an Oscar for it would be great albeit Cillian deserves it more |
PizzaBear
01.25.24 | @wildcard Heavy handed or not, the messaging is pretty bog standard feminism from the like 50s (being bandied by a multi billion dollar corp to launder its image no less), there's really nothing new or revolutionary to it and that's what makes the obsessive fanboy/girl-ing so grating. There have been some pretty thoughtful critiques of it from "the left" as well but unfortunately these don't have the same megaphone shapiro types do |
PizzaBear
01.25.24 | With that said though, I'd still recommend seeing the movie if you havent, I did mean it when I said it was cute/fun but that's really all it is |
Wildcardbitchesss
01.25.24 | oh yeah I’ll for sure watch it, I try to watch all best picture noms, but I think I might wait a little while. Kinda try to remove myself from all of the hype and go in without any kind of like preconceived notion or whatever |
Slex
01.25.24 | Also of course Greta Lee didn't get a nom smh, Lily deserves to win (tho Emma probably will) but Greta Lee was impossibly good |
AlexKzillion
01.25.24 | caught past lives last night. really good movie but wasn't particularly blown away like i wanted to be. beautiful looking movie |
TheSonomaDude
01.25.24 | i liked past lives about as much, great film worthy of a nomination but doesn't compete with the juggernauts of the year |
izakaya
01.25.24 | best picture ranking (haven't seen KOTFM (stop making such long movies Martin ffs) or American Fiction yet):
Past Lives - never gonna win but affected me the most. my friends and I had a 30 min walk home afterwards and we didn't say a word to each other.
Anatomy of a Fall - absolutely loved. some of it's a bit ridiculous but the marriage story scene was chilling
Poor Things
Zone of Interest - liked it a lot but fuck me it's bleak
Oppenheimer - worthy winner if it happens. little to love but loads to give kudos to
Barbie - the academy aren't ready yet
The Holdovers - warm and fuzzy but kind of inconsequential
Maestro - hated it. boring and annoying |
Wildcardbitchesss
01.25.24 | Yeah still gotta watch Zone of Interest, Poor Things, and Past Lives. Excited for all of them but I don’t see myself liking any of them as much as Anatomy of a Fall or Killers of the Flower Moon.
But honestly, personally, my favorite film of the year was Evil Dead Rise sooooooo… |
TheSonomaDude
01.25.24 | Evil Dead Rise for the BP nomination. actually would not have been upset with that one getting a best makeup nomination |
TalonsOfFire
01.25.24 | Napoleon was literally a joke. Don't know why it didn't get razzies. And I loved The Last Duel, thought that should've been nominated for plenty of oscars. I didn't quite buy/connect with the story of Past Lives but it was beautifully made and acted. Iron Claw should've been eligible, haven't seen yet but surprised it got nuthin' |
AlexKzillion
01.25.24 | napoleon was borderline incoherent but those battles fuckedddddd
|
Wildcardbitchesss
01.25.24 | @sonoma
I really think it should’ve man. The effects were so good. If they used CGI it was sparingly because I really could not tell. Really talented team behind that film. |
TalonsOfFire
01.25.24 | Yeah the battle scenes were great and it was pretty entertaining, mainly the first half.
My BP ranking would be Oppy>Holdovers>KotFM>Past Lives>Maestro>Fall>Barbie (haven't seen Zone of Interest, Poor Things, or American Fiction yet) |
unclereich
01.25.24 | the very first battle scene took me right out of the movie with the terrible cg horse of his that gets shot by the cannon ball. |
Wildcardbitchesss
01.25.24 | I know Ridley said there’s a cut that’s way longer than the theatrical release. It wouldn’t be the first time he made a movie that felt underwhelming only for everyone to consider the directors cut a masterpiece…
I haven’t seen Napoleon but if the biggest misses are bad pacing or editing, I can definitely see a director's cut being much better |
AlexKzillion
01.25.24 | by comparison, ferrari mostly accomplishes what napoleon tried and failed to do except ferrari had unbelievably bad cgi in the few instances it used it, which happened to be the biggest moments in the entire film |
Hyperion1001
01.25.24 | awards for art are fucking stupid and these are the dumbest of the bunch, but you gotta admit that making a movie explicitly about the female perspective directed by a woman and starring a woman and then only nominating the male supporting actor for an award is fucking hilarious
An all time great troll job by whoever the idiots who run these dumb award shows are. |
Ryus
01.25.24 | frederick wiseman - les troigros is my pick for best movie of the year. robbed! |
Wildcardbitchesss
01.25.24 | @hyperion
I don’t completely agree. I think that the Oscars and Emmy’s still have some validity. I’ve watched a lot of good movies that I otherwise may not have ever heard of because of them.
The grammys on the other hand are complete dogshit and are exactly what you describe. |
TalonsOfFire
01.25.24 | Agreed on both counts Wildcard. I think the main problems with the oscars are movies getting nominations just because the studios have $ for campaigns and the politics/corporate domination behind that, and lacking recognition for anything horror. |
PizzaBear
01.25.24 | "you gotta admit that making a movie explicitly about the female perspective directed by a woman and starring a woman and then only nominating the male supporting actor for an award is fucking hilarious"
If this is about Barbie, everyone seems to be ignoring America Ferrera's nom in the supporting actress category which probably says something about the nonsense hype around this movie but I'm not entirely sure what |
AlexKzillion
01.25.24 | "awards for art are fucking stupid and these are the dumbest of the bunch, but you gotta admit that making a movie explicitly about the female perspective directed by a woman and starring a woman and then only nominating the male supporting actor for an award is fucking hilarious"
and that's hardly an unfair take on the movie. gosling not only has the best performance in the movie but has the most fleshed out character by far. i find it hard to fault the oscars or whatever because that's literally the movie we got |
climactic
01.25.24 | I hope Giamatti wins |
TheSonomaDude
01.26.24 | me too, he's my pick |
TalonsOfFire
01.26.24 | I love Giamatti and would want him to have it except I feel like this is Cillian's time. Would be very happy with either of them taking it tho. My two favorite movies of the year.
Just watched Ferrari which was mediocre at best. Napoleon at least had some entertainment value. Most of modern Hollywood doesn't know how to write compelling stories anymore. |
Slex
01.26.24 | Charles Melton already won this shit y'all talking about is a charade |
Devastator
01.26.24 | Only thing I care about is Godzilla -1 winning. Should have been nominated for best foreign film too. |
TalonsOfFire
01.26.24 | One of the surprises was May December getting no acting noms, especially Melton which is too bad. Glad Nyad got recognized tho |
