08.13.15 | As someone who's been out of college for over 3 years now, I'm insanely jealous of you. Live it up, have a great time, concentrate on your work but don't forget to have fun. I wish I could redo my Freshman year again. |
TheSonomaDude
08.13.15 | Sweet dude, where did you go to college? |
JWT155
08.13.15 | Penn State, I go back a few times a year. |
JoylessBastard
08.13.15 | Yeah seriously, socialise as much as you can. If you don't, you'll end up like me, going into 3rd year having lost all my friends at home and replaced them with basically no one at university and spending every day wishing I was back in high school. From the sound of things there's a lot you're interested in getting involved with, so definitely do that!
P.s. Your school sounds awesome, that dorm recording facility sounds awesome as fuck! |

08.13.15 | enjoy campus as much as you can, cause from what I've seen of it, the rest of Huntsville is a sack of shit. |

08.13.15 | lmao you've been to Hunstville? Yah it's not the prettiest of towns... |

08.13.15 | That is true, sound advice sir. Sam Houston and Texas State usually compete for the title of "most turnt Texas college" but Texas State has been in the lead for a little bit. Houston Baptist (of all fucking places) is coming up fast too. |

Good luck though bro. I never went to college (not counting the few weeks of community college), school ain't my thing hahaha. |
PurpleDino
08.13.15 | In all honesty tho I don't how it works in the US but in the UK (unless you go to Oxford or Cambridge) your first year doesn't count towards your degree so it's the ideal year to smoke so much weed and maybe get drunk a few times but mainly smoke weed. |

08.13.15 | conquest all the pussy and manage to workout like a beast/smoke weed everyday like I did |

08.13.15 | School isn't my thing either, but free education in a field I've always wanted to study in plus free food 24/7 is on offer I really couldn't turn down |
JWT155
08.13.15 | Usually your classes your first year don't go towards your Major but certainly do go to your degree. For instance, I started as an Engineering major, year 1 was almost completely Physics, Chemistry, English, Econ and other classes. It wasn't until year 2 that I began taking E Mech, Fluids and other "Engineering" oriented classes. |
TheSonomaDude
08.13.15 | Relinquished, you speak words of truth. |
TheSonomaDude
08.13.15 | Because I did some documentaries pre-college, I'm actually going straight into my major as an incoming freshman. I still have to take like one math and science, but I'm not waiting a full year to dive into my passion. |
ashcrash9
08.13.15 | Yeah, I've been to Huntsville. My dad had an apartment there for about a year...til (I kid you not) one of this spring's storms that whipped through there uprooted a tree that crushed a corner of his place. He's okay. Even gave him an excuse to leave early. lol |
TheSonomaDude
08.13.15 | Well I'm glad he's out of Hunstville, the SHSU film dorms are probably the most luxurious places to live in the entire town. Do you remember the name of the apartment complex he lived in? I work as a carpet steam cleaner until college starts and I've been to nearly every apartment complex in town...some good, some abysmal cesspools. |
PurpleDino
08.13.15 | That sounds confusing, I don't understand the whole Major thing. Here you pick a course and that's what you study haha. You might have an "open unit" in your first year which is not related to your course but that's it.

08.13.15 | About to head back for my second year, agreed with everyone that says socialize. My first semester was awesome, I became really good friends with all of my hallmates during that time, but second semester they all rushed fraternities and got more involved and I realized I had been using them as a social crutch without knowing it until they were gone. Get involved in some way that's not academic, that's my personal goal for this year and I'm really looking forward to it. Also judging purely by the fact you're into film and music, there might also be some other liberal arts classes worth taking. Didn't know until I experimented how much I enjoyed legal history and English, before then I was mostly a math guy. Good luck! |
TheSonomaDude
08.13.15 | From my understand, most American university majors require level one classes, like two maths, two sciences, two histories, ect., which are taken in the freshman year. Without those classes, you can't graduate. Once you've knocked those out, you can start the classes that are directly linked to your major, which usually begins sophomore year. Someone correct me if I'm wrong because I'm not totally sure. |
PurpleDino
08.13.15 | I see, seems strange to me, as does the whole fraternity and sorority thing. |
TheSonomaDude
08.13.15 | I get frats but I dont agree with em. Some people just want to be in a tight group, which is understandable. Plus most frats get free beer, sex, and drugs, and a few have like test cheating networks and shit. I'm not sure if I'm interested in being in a frat but something tells me I'll be in one by the time I graduate. |
beefshoes
08.13.15 | Good luck man. College is pretty awesome, and make sure you keep up with stuff and don't procrastinate. just doing those two things prevents a surprising amount of stress.
As far as frats go, I was in a pre-law fraternity for my first semester and it was silly. I have a few semi-close friends in an actual fraternity and I was close to considering pledging for it, but that kind of lifestyle is too wild for me. If you enjoy parties and if you want a guaranteed network of people that you can depend on for support, it might be worth looking into. |
TheSonomaDude
08.13.15 | Thanks dude, my issues with doing a frat would be pledge stuff. I'm not good at being bossed around and older college douchebags making me do stuff doesn't mix well with me. Plus a lot of my older friends go to Oklahoma State and those pledges went thru hell; dick sucking scandals, a pledge got his ear shot off, one was forced to kick a cop in the nuts or face brutal physical punishment, shit like that. Not sure how bad SHSU is but that sounds like shit. |
JWT155
08.13.15 | @PurpleDino - American Education is based on the Liberal Arts education, which dates back to Charlemagne. The goal of a University education is not only to proficient in your field of choice but to also be a well rounded educated individual. As important as it is to master your craft, it's also imperative to possibly learn a language, be able to write well, experience the arts through art, music, dance as well as have a background in History and such. |

08.13.15 | Also: "I get frats but I dont agree with em. Some people just want to be in a tight group, which is understandable. Plus most frats get free beer, sex, and drugs, and a few have like test cheating networks and shit."
Nothing really could be further from the truth, a few frats may epitomize the frat lure of movies like animal house but in reality it's just a bunch of dudes playing videogames, doing homework and networking. |
TheSonomaDude
08.13.15 | Well that sucks. Damn the media for giving me the wrong impression! |
JWT155
08.13.15 | I mean there's still parties, I've been to some crazy ones, but those are like once or twice a semester. |
Brostep
08.13.15 | dang you're getting a full ride? that's niiiiiice
heading back early september for sophomore year. i would agree with other people and say talk to everyone you can. if you fuck it up you just won't have to talk to them ever again and if you don't then you've made a friend! it's super helpful and people will also be as nervous as you so you can make them feel more comfortable too |
TheSonomaDude
08.13.15 | Thanks brostep, being social and meeting new friends (ladies too) is something I'm excited about. I fucked up in high school by not talking at all and, the few times I did talk, I was pretty arrogant and most people (especially in sports) differed from my views full heartedly. I'm gonna try and be as open as possible and I've met some people at orientation who seem pretty cool. |
Brostep
08.13.15 | haha I went to an all-guys hs so I totally get you in terms of talking to girls. just remember everything is a learning experience and realizing when you've gone wrong with talking is usually a good thing to do haha |
Asdfp277
08.13.15 | "I went to an all-guys hs" that explains a lot lol |
Brostep
08.13.15 | it's actually made me hella critical of single-sex education tbh (at least for guys). we're developing without any sort of correction from girls our age, which can be super super harmful in the long run |
Asdfp277
08.13.15 | that explains a lot lol [2] |

08.13.15 | Honestly, one of the most liberating things about college is that people really aren't as judgemental as you think. I was pretty nerdy in high School, but in College, I was friends with everyone on my floor, guys who were athletes to pre-med majors. Literally the only rule in making friends and being friendly in college is don't be a dick, if you aren;t an asshole your chances of meeting people and gaining friends is pretty good. In your first week of school definitely leave your door open and talk to as many people as possible. i remember my first year my dorm floor basically shared everything from borrowing video games, using flashdrives to get music from someone, borrowing movies, text books, etc. It was great. |
TheSonomaDude
08.13.15 | I would love to be able to do that. Penn State is one of the biggest colleges in the country so I'm hoping I could harness some of that. SHSU has roughly 22,000 students enrolled in the fall and the full ride scholarship should give me a lot of ease. Although I looked like a "jock douche" and a "pretty boy" I never got along with the athletes, and the music kids usually looked at me as a typical frat football-playing dick and wouldn't come near me. I'm hoping college isn't like that, though Texas and Pennsylvania are two different environments. |
JWT155
08.13.15 | Athletes are different in college than High School. Most athletes I knew were chill, didn't want to talk about their sport much and just wanted to be treated like a normal person. In High School sports is viewed as the "cool" thing to participate in but in college it's literally a job, their lives revolve around it and it can be overwhelming at times. This is also the first time where athletes are essentially objectified by the students and seen less as people but just objects, like QB on the football team. Most of them just want to have normal friends who don't constantly bring up that they're an athlete. I was good friends with a kid on the gymnastics team, dated a girl on the swim team and knew few other people in field hockey and lacrosse. You would prob never guess it but when I was in school the sports team that threw the craziest parties was the Fencing team. |
Relinquished
08.13.15 | yea fencing teams are cool arrogant shitheads |
TheSonomaDude
08.13.15 | Our school had the "frats", the loud rowdy kids that show up to all the football games with a sea of massive cheers, and they always threw the craziest parties. Only about 15% of the group played in sports though. The "frat" movement was so massive that I'd actually call it a sport at our school. |
