07.24.23 | i mean it depends on what you expect to get out of oppenheimer / what your preconceptions of Nolan as a filmmaker are. I loved it tbh, might be my favourite of his. its not without its flaws, though my personal complaints with it couldn't distract me from how moved i felt by the subject as a whole. that era of physics is a bit of a special interest topic for me, as is the politics of the second world war, so i think i had the added benefit of being indulged a little by the film. my friends all seemed to have been very taken in by the film and its subject matter as well and they're not all big dorks like i am, so evidently Nolan managed to make what really was an unruly amount of information palatable
aaaand fugg now we're doing oppenheimer in the Barbie thread |

bludngorevidal
07.24.23 | Barbie was first and foremost a thoroughly entertaining movie, and beyond that extremely well designed. When I walked out of the theater I first felt it was thematically a bit shallow, but on further reflection it captures the existential tension b/w not knowing your true self and being captivated by forces beyond your control (such as algorithm, media, upbringing, etc.) well. |

07.24.23 | 1) Barbie slapped, went way above and beyond, v smart big funny disarming emotional beats galore yes love it
2) the thought that they had to redraw the scrappiest world map of all time, shown for all of 1 second, to appease the Chinese gvmt is hysterical
3) main gripe is everything revolving around Will Ferrell's CEO (other than his introduction scene, which is all well and good and fun). not so much that the character + humour were less entertaining than everything else spotlighted so prominently in the film (though they were), but i get a real ick seeing big corps pushing to hard to own (and swiftly profit off) the narratives *against* themselves. shows up the most insidious side of this otherwise solid take:
"captures the existential tension b/w not knowing your true self and being captivated by forces beyond your control (such as algorithm, media, upbringing, etc.) well"
they now want to own our existential crises and epiphanies instead of toxic gender standards - great. understand that some measure of public self-reckoning was v much necessary given the way the rest of the film was presented, but the way Ferrell + co carried it was innocuous and indulgent and slightly soured me on the whole package. not quite a deal breaker, but v much 8/10 that i really wish was 9/10 territory |

07.24.23 | “I enjoyed it along with Oppenheimer, did the double feature lol”
Ah, full Barbenheimer…! Crazy that that the real-life invention of the atom bomb is now inextricably linked with a fashion doll, but yeah… I’ve yet to see either. I have fancied going to see both as separate entities from some time ago, but this weird, media-led, hype-generating, shove-down-the-throat, mash-up I find somewhat off-putting.
“Does Barbie nurture any apocalyptic anxieties?”
“it nurtures self-existential anxieties if that cuts it”
But saying that, between these two comments, it probably reflects the *now* more than most things out there.

I have a right to complain about the ridiculously bad casting when I waited for a Barbie live action movie for most of my life. Barbie is for me a symbol of femininity ever since I was 5. The selection of older actors who already appear affected by midlife crisis did not leave a positive impression on me, that's all. I did watch the movie yesterday btw, it was alright.
For your interest, Barbie was born at the age of 19, and she's always younger than 22, Margot Robbie is 33. Also, Ken has ultra-symmetrical face, while Ryan Gosling's left eye is migrating towards his mouth for some reason.

…they’re just not the right choices to play Barbie and Ken, my childhood toys.”
According to Wikipedia, Barbie debuted as a toy 64 years ago, and if she was 19 then, then casting an actress who is in their early-to-mid 80s would be the ideal choice for toy-accurate authenticity. Therefore, Margot Robbie is way too young. |

ArsMoriendi
07.25.23 | It’s so true, I watched them back to back too so my perspective was pretty fresh when I decided that
Oppenheimer had all the aesthetic of a grit “historical fiction classic” but idk the dialogue wasn’t that great, the stereotypical Nolan tropes were annoying (why does everything need to feel framed like a crime drama Nolan? Oh yeah out of order scenes to force mystery, seen you do that before too… ah yes some scenes in black and white because bad guy.
Barbie felt more unique, was funny, pretty to look at, oddly enough had WAY more self awareness, and memorability |
GreyShadow
07.25.23 | Barbie was fun, laughed a lot
Ryan Gosling was great tbh
legit just such a fun premise. had no idea what I was getting into and it's all the better for it. there are so many ways to fuck up the self-aware stuff these days but they definitely did a good job with it

AlexKzillion
07.25.23 | "Does that impression have more to do the people you have noticed at theatres? Or the reaction from social media?"
mostly social media/internet. especially with opp lol seen so much stuff that essentially boils down to "if you didn't have the exact same opinion as me about opp than you know nothing about cinema" and it just comes off like such a dick measuring contest
feel like with music people are generally a bit more accepting of differing opinions / don't talk in such "objective" terms. never ever really cared about movies like i do music, let alone seen these movies yet, but i can't help but observe considering how much of a monoculture event this weekend was |
Flugmorph
07.25.23 | based jeffery.
also yes movie buff culture and internet discourse is far more cancerous than music discourse could ever be. and a good portion of that is the now decade old culture war and go woke go broke discourse garbage. ironic since barbie had a phenomenal box office weekend.
oh insufferable snobbery is also rampant. 15 year olds saw citizen cane once and think they can accurately analyze and trash every movie they come across now. |
GhandhiLion
07.25.23 | I wonder what the explanation for that difference is. Could it just be because film has a larger audience?
I've noticed there is a desire to seem knowledgeable about the technical aspects of film, often with the desire to label something as higher art. I don't think this equally applies to music. (Though it still exists) |
Flugmorph
07.25.23 | yeah movies are more mainstream i suppose. they're just a more visible and tangible part of popculture i guess, music is omnipresent but there might be less people who are marginally interested in music in a popculture event kinda way and its way more of a fractured field as opposed to the rather centralizing force that is the cinema and hollywood. as mentioned above, big cinema events like barbenheimer might be some of the closest examples of monoculture we can get nowadays. |
Flugmorph
07.25.23 | music is a far more democratic medium because its easier to be produced by small teams or single people now while you still might reach a large audience (unlikely but possible). movies are huge productions that need massive funding, not directly comparable to a comparable product like an album or smth. |
Flugmorph
07.25.23 | of course there are indie movies but those don't really have comparable platforms to reach large audiences like music has with streaming these days. |
Nomos2
07.25.23 | yeah Barbie was way, way better than it has any right to be as an officially licensed movie based off a physical product IP

08.07.23 | Loved it. Possibly a historical and monumental film. The design is impeccable, and so was the acting. I genuinely laughed hard af throughout some of the scenes from the movie at the theater, which is something that doesn't happen often. I'm frustrated that people are politicizing the film more than it actually is. It's a commentary about power dynamics, gender roles and the limits of masculinity and femininity. The film doesn't offer insights into the structural problems that sustain these power dynamics or how to change, and honestly, I think it's fine, after all it's a film, and a film about Barbie. I'm sure it succeeded in at least provoking a reflection for people. My critics could be how fast the film was on some transition from major parts of the film, and characterization of some characters, but I guess that's what they were able to do the limitations of the format and the idea. |
CaliggyJack
08.07.23 | I haven't seen Oppenheimer but I bet Barbie is better than it.
I had fun with it, it's a solid 4/5 and I enjoyed the performances of its cast. This type of narrative isn't breaking new ground but Gerwig does it well. It's a surprisingly Christian film and it carries those influences in a fascinating way. |
