Cal and Evo Fight for My Love

Users Calculatinginfinity and EvoHavok are currently in a war of love. Why 18 albums? Cause that's how many Cal has left until he hits 500, and he's gonna be doing this too. I decided to do it as well cause fuck it. Rules are, we do one a day. Simple as all fuck lmao
1Tigers on Trains
Grandfather

Cal

Named after what I assume to be Steven Wilson's favourite kind of tigers, this band is prime sowingseasoncore. Now, what a lot of people misunderstand about sowingseasoncore, is that some of it's legitimately good. And thank my lucky stars, Grandfather's one of those albums. It's instrumentally pleasant, it's consistently balanced quality-wise and there's that addictive sprinkle of nostalgia (which is like, the music equivalent of MSG). Shortcomings in Grandfather, I would have to concede that there's an element of "safety" to the music, it's not exactly unfamiliar to me at this point and it's not the kind of thing I see myself returning to very often. One thing I really did like a lot though was the vocal harmonies, I couldn't tell if there was more than one singer or not but the harmonies seemed to account for each other's shortcomings and give a helping hand where needed. Overall, a cute little 3.6 / 5

For Your Pleasure

Evo

This is one of those albums where I've kinda accidentally worked my way backwards towards. As in, most of the stuff I currently enjoy now owes a fuck of a lot to this. As it turns out, that means this album doesn't offer a lot for me to discover, other than the obvious roots it serves as. The first half really doesn't capture me much, definitely find myself vibing to the second half the most, especially "Grey Lagoons". 3.1/5
3Sleepytime Gorilla Museum
Of Natural History

Cal

Sleepytime Gorillaz Museum was an odd experience to say the least but probably what I found the most strange about it was... how strange I didn't find it. For me I find this really holds itself together mostly on stellar instrumentation and band unity. Other than that it's just a really weird prog metal album, long songs, a bunch of shit that shouldn't go together but are just put together anyway. It remains fluid enough but that fluidity kind of gets lost for me on just how fucking much is going on. 3.3/5
4Fields of the Nephilim
Elizium

Evo

This is probably my favourite one so far. I feel like, given that this is a gothic album, I should really have expected the low-larynx singing, but for some reason I didn't think it was going to be as over the top as it was and it took some getting used to at first. But once you get past that, the album is very atmospheric and pleasant to listen to. The length of the songs seemed a bit heinous but quite a few of them actually pulled off the running time. 4.2/5
5Koan
When The Silence Is Speaking

Cal

This album's biggest weakness, is that it's too engaging. I know that's an odd thing to say about an album, but I honestly would have enjoyed this more if it had sat in the background. Instead of letting me walk through a wonderland of sound, like I usually prefer my downtempo electronic stuff to do, this sort of takes you for a walk on a leash. if that makes sense. 3.3/5
6Stiu Nu Stiu
Ultra Silvam

Evo

Shockingly convincing display of several facets of gothic styles, heavy on the reverb which I'm a sucker for. Drags a bit on some of the longer tracks but there's some passages on this thing that make that pretty damn forgivable. If you're looking at this going "shit, I hope this sounds like the cover", then I guess it's your lucky day cause I reckon it does. But maybe that's just the cover art tricking me into associating the sound with that colour palette. Who knows? 4/5

While You Were Out

Cal

Notoriously considered to be one of, if not the most accessible noise albums, While You Were Out's intentions are certainly noble. However, the flipside to the album's immediacy is that the ideas and textures don't really stick around long enough. I definitely see the appeal in this, but idk noise is real fucking subjective and this probably needs time to grow on me. 2.9/5
