Burzum Ranked

Full-lengths only.
10Burzum
Fallen

Complete fucking turd.
9Burzum
Umskiptar

Sonically pleasing, musically pretty much worthless. A waste of an interesting guitar tone.
8 Burzum
Dauši Baldrs

Poorly put-together and frightfully repetitive, though there are some interesting themes in there.
7Burzum
Belus

Many cool riffs, and even a few cool tunes, that remain painfully underdeveloped. An album that had the potential to be the continuation that "Det Som Engang Var" never got yet failed to be so through its creators apparent haste, laziness and lack of motivation.
6 Burzum
Hlišskjįlf

Repetitive and cheesy, but occasionally involved enough to be interesting.

Hvis Lyset Tar Oss

The opening track may very well be one of the best black metal tracks ever, certainly the greatest Burzum song, and Tomhet is quite nice. However, the two tracks in the middle are boring, droning and uncreative, and thus the album's overall impact is not half of what it could be.
4Burzum
Sol Austan, Mani Vestan

Surprisingly good. An engaging, compelling and coherent piece of dreamy ambient, suggestive of mythological archetypes through color and tone.
3Burzum
Det Som Engang Var

A continuation of the debut and a transition into Burzum's next stage at the same time. It's a great work with some killer songs and some real coherence and continuity, as well as some interesting choices in color and instrumentation that, if further explored could have led black metal in a very different direction.
2Burzum
Filosofem

An atmospheric tour-de-force. The album seeps into your blood slowly, and before you realize it has contaminated your vision. The world assumes a bleaker note, as if painted with the bleak hues that dominate this impenetrable music. I'm not usually a fan of minimalism, but here it is employed with majesty in deconstructing the ego, layer by layer, bit by bit, until the listener is left alone in silence and totality.

Burzum

The true masterpiece. A journey to a place far beyond, an abandonment of the socialized self into a feral, dark and violent world. Brilliantly constructed, powerfully evocative riffs melt into each other with sinister ease. This is the release that epitomizes Varg's idea of music "structured like an epic narration." Not only is each song brimming with genius and constructed with admirable craftsmanship, but so is the album as a coherent whole. An experience unlike any other. If "Filosofem" is like a haunting painting, then "Burzum" is the darkest and oldest of tales.
