Round 8: Inverted Umbrella Competition

2 are out and 7 are still in. No lateness disqualification this time! Yay! The new deadline to get your round 2 songs in is 5pm EST on December 17th! THIS WILL BE THE LAST ROUND WITH DOUBLE ELIMINATIONS, the final 5 will be single eliminations starting round 9
1The Kinks
The Village Green Preservation Society

1.Link a song via YouTube, Spotify, Soundcloud, Bandcamp, DailyMotion, Vimeo... or whatever you like as long as I don't have to download something.

2. This round is [Baroque Pop]. Popular music led with orchestral instruments. Violins, flutes, timpani, trombones, cellos, clarinets, bassoons! I'll allow chamber pop and orchestral pop, but I'll warn you: a stripped-down vocalist+piano combo with not much else will not fare well. Think BIG!

3. Aim to impress me with what you pick, since I'm rating these.

4. If I know the song already, I'll tell you to pick something new, otherwise, you're good.

5. I'm going to start each new round every Sunday night (EST,) so if you're late, you're out. My 1-2 least favorite recs will be eliminated each round (1 if we don't get a lot of people and 2 if we do.)

***Winner of the competition can recommend me whatever 2 albums they want and I'll listen to them no matter the album as long as it's possible to find and as long as neither exceeds 3 hours.***
2Royal Trux
Twin Infinitives

GhandhiLion: ā€œ(Edge of The) Ape Oven"

Avant-garde piano and what sounds like an accordion, hmmm. Itā€™s a vibe to say the least. I like it, but I wonder how much of this is just random sprawling improv and how much of this was thought out. 5 mins 57 seconds in and my brain is starting to make sense of this. Itā€™s repetitive but also not, itā€™s chaotic, but also chill. Contradictions are cool. This is good, but itā€™s still missing that oomph that my favoite noise rock tends to have.

3.8/5 (SAFE)
3Daisy Chainsaw
Eleventeen

SlothcoreSam: ā€œI Feel Isaneā€

Whoa, I like these vocals. Poppy structure, but fucked up timbres. Riot grrrrl if they mumbled and howled more. Simple, but vey effective!

4.5/5 (SAFE)
4The Drones
Here Come the Lies

Porcupinetheater: ā€œThe Cockeyed Lowlife of the Highlandsā€

The vocals are okay, but the noise is good. Jesus Lizard influenced? Simple enough andā€¦ oh a fakeout ending, okay.

3.9/5 (SAFE)
5Today Is the Day
Willpower

CugnoBrasso: ā€œFirst Knifeā€

Super bad vocals, good riff. What a conflict. Okay, the section halfā€™s vocals are better. The guitar really clashes in a good way. I forgive the opening a little because the rest of it ruled.

3.6/5 (SAFE)
6Low
Hey What

Someone: ā€œWhite Horses"

What is this and is it noise ROCK? Itā€™s glitchy and industrial? Even if you could argue that this is noise, it ainā€™t noise rock. Youā€™re loing points, sorry. Also this kinda sucks anyway? Like this part sounds like when your GameCube disc has a scratch on it, so you canā€™t play Windwaker. I like Windwaker. Stay away from my GameCube!

1.5/5 (-0.5 for not fitting theme) = 1/5 (ELIMINATED!)
7Laddio Bolocko
Strange Warmings of Laddio Bolocko

JohnnyoftheWell: ā€œNurseā€

Now THIS is fucking noise rock. I like the metal clanging percussion. Not much structure and reads a lot like a jam, but itā€™s a good jam. Oh this is getting chaotic, and hypnotic, and psychotic, and other tics! Where am I? Iā€™m lost. Help me.

4.7/5 (ROUND WINNER! [+0.5 will be added to their next round score])
8The Nation of Ulysses
Plays Pretty for Baby

Kompys2000: ā€œThe Hickey Underworldā€

Messy and garage rocky, I feel it. Canā€™t say I like these vocals. This could be noisier if Iā€™m being honest. Iā€™m kind of bored by this, but itā€™s not bad.

3/5 +(0.5 from winning last round) = 3.5 (ELIMINATED!)
9Pile
You're Better Than This

Fogza: ā€œTin Foil Hatā€

The dynamic changes are cool so far. This is from 2015? Good for them making shit that still sounds like it belong in a gutter (this is a complement by the way.) It sounds retro, yā€™know?

3.8/5 (SAFE)
10Scratch Acid
Scratch Acid

ffs: ā€œCannibalā€

Thereā€™s no shame in playing it safe! The Jesus Lizard Rule, so Scratch Acid was a smart choice. Yowā€™s vocals are a force, the riff is fun the vibe is great. Itā€™s as good as anything from Head at least if not better!

4/5 (SAFE)
