Round 6: Inverted Umbrella Competition

2 are out and 11 are still in. Not lateness disqualification this time! Yay! The new deadline to get your round 2 songs in is 5pm EST on December 3rd!
1The Beta Band
Hot Shots II

1.Link a song via YouTube, Spotify, Soundcloud, Bandcamp, DailyMotion, Vimeo... or whatever you like as long as I don't have to download something.

2. This round is [Trip Hop]. Chill downtempo with hip hop-like beats and some turntablism. I'm kinda lenient with this. If it's downtempo or instrumental hip hop that is kind of trip-hoppish, I'll count it.

3. Aim to impress me with what you pick, since I'm rating these.

4. If I know the song already, I'll tell you to pick something new, otherwise, you're good.

5. I'm going to start each new round every Sunday night (EST,) so if you're late, you're out. My 1-2 least favorite recs will be eliminated each round (1 if we don't get a lot of people and 2 if we do.)

***Winner of the competition can recommend me whatever 2 albums they want and I'll listen to them no matter the album as long as it's possible to find and as long as neither exceeds 3 hours.***

Chairs Missing

SlothcoreSam: “Outdoor Minor”

I like the bright piano. It’s otherwise very chill an very indie despite being from 1978. Ahead of its time for sure! I liked it, but I guess it didn’t wow me.

3.7/5 (SAFE)
3Dr. Dog
Fate

Kompys2000: “The Ark”

Good bass, expressive vocals. Kind of neutral on this, I do like "The World May Never Know" by them a lot though. A bit too “gritty” rock for me I guess?

3.2/5 (SAFE)
4Buke and Gase
General Dome

JohnnyoftheWell: “Hard Times”

Jagged structure so far kind of? Like a very cleaned up Deerhoof. Her voice is pretty and I bet would be nice to see live, but listening to it right now, I’m neutral on it? Or at least I’m not in love with it. Nothing bad about it though!

3.5/5 (SAFE)
5Sufjan Stevens
Illinois

BlazingBlitzer:
"Come On! Feel the Illinoise! (Part I: The World's Columbian Exposition – Part II: Carl Sandburg Visits Me in a Dream)”

This sounds vaguely familiar. It’s very jingly and the trumpets are cool. His voice i a bit too saccharine maybe? This has a little bit of a progressive pop feel to it which how complex and multi-sectioned it is. The keys sound really cool during this one instrumental break. Feels objectively well made and original and I can’t deny it.

4/5 (SAFE)
6Elle Milano
Acres Of Dead Space Cadets

Mort.: “Step Kids in Love”

I dislike these vocals. It makes the song feel oddly post punk revival. Musically it’s pretty boring, kind of radio-friendly mid-2000s whatever. The chorus pickup is just so predictable.

2.9/5 (ELIMINNATED!)
7Bara Zmekova
Lunaves

someone: “Karlín”

Thought it was going to just be a piano ballad, but then it got weird. I like her voice and the percussion and her ability to change direction. Interesting and well made, but not my favorite thing, I suppose.

3.9/6 (SAFE)
8Sebadoh
Bubble and Scrape

BitterJalapenoJr: “Soul and Fire”

The lo-fi production here is really nice and the guitar like and vocals both really catch my ear. Maybe it’s my love of Dinosaur Jr, but I can’t hate these clear Lou Barlow stylitic choices.

4.2/5 (SAFE)
9Crack Cloud
Pain Olympics

fogza: “Post Truth (Birth of a Nation)”

Hmm those vocals are whatever. The atmosphere is cool I guess though. I appreciate the direction change and the buildup, but something isn’t connecting with me. Maybe it’s not quite coloful enough? Who knows, I’m fickle.

3.3/5 (SAFE)

ffs: “Panique”

Now we’re talking! Frantic and intense so far. Trippy, seductive, surfy, and psychedelic. A lot is going on, but not too much and it’s catchy! May revivist soon.

4.3/5 (SAFE)
11Pinback
Summer in Abaddon

CugnoBrasso: “Non-Photo Blue”

The vocals are eh, but the guitar is interesting. Reminds me of The Dismemberment Plan. Not bad, but definitely not for me. Maybe a bit unengaging.

3.2/5 (SAFE)
12Roselit Bone
Crisis Actor

Porcupinetheater:
“Surgeon’s Saw” (by Roselit Bone from Criis Actor)

I like the guitar and vocals. Ooh, getting weird without those backl up vocals. Thee backups are doing some heavy lifting, or at least they were until the trumpet started swelling. Yeah, this is good.

4.4/5 (ROUND WINNER! [+0.5 will be added to his next round score])
13Juliana Hatfield
Hey Babe

GhandhiLion: “Forever Baby”

Cutesy and twee. Not much else here. The guitar and chorus were okay.

3.2/5 +(0.5 from winning last round) = 3.7 (SAFE)
14Marcos Valle
Marcos Valle

PotsyTater: “Estelar”

This isn’t indie haha, it’s like disco/synth-funk. It’s fun and lively, but I gotta -0.5 for not following the theme. The trumpets are cool though and it’s engaging, I’ll give you that. I think he may’ve wanted to be out.

3.6(-0.5 for not following theme) = 3.1/5 (ELIMINATED)
