Round 2: Inverted Umbrella Competition

2 are out and 22 are still in. The deadline to get your round 2 songs in is 5pm EST November 5th!
1Gazelle Twin
Black Dog

The rules are the same as last round:

1.Link a song via YouTube, Spotify, Soundcloud, Bandcamp, DailyMotion, Vimeo... or whatever you like as long as I don't have to download something.

2.This round is [synthpop/industrial]. While anything from either genre is acceptable, I've been most interested in where the two genres intersect. IE: EBM, darkwave, electro-industrial. Industrial metal and electropop probably aren't good directions.

3. Aim to impress me with what you pick, since I'm rating these.

4. If I know the song already, I'll tell you to pick something new, otherwise, you're good.

5. I'm going to start each new round every Sunday night (EST,) so if you're late, you're out. My 1-2 least favorite recs will be eliminated each round (1 if we don't get a lot of people and 2 if we do.)

***Winner of the competition can recommend me whatever 2 albums they want and I'll listen to them no matter the album as long as it's possible to find and as long as neither exceeds 3 hours.***
2She-Devils
She-Devils

budgie: "Come"

Very pretty and surfy. I like her voice, it’s very nostalgic and sleepy sounding. Simple and maybe even unassuming, but that’s somehow a strength.

4.3/5 (SAFE)
3Bumblebees
Paper Boat

CugnoBrasso: "Older"

Heavy MGMT energy here, but with more rhythm, so actually maybe Foster the People then haha. I don’t really find this interesting at all, unfortunately. Maybe a bit generic?

2.8/5 (SAFE)
4Lone
Lemurian

pizzamachine: “Cali Drought”

Very lo-fi hip hop beats so far. No vocals. This reminds me a it of Black Moth Super Rainbow or even like a more simplistic Boards of Canada. Can’t say I’m really digging it, but maybe if it had vocals, I’d like it more.

3/5 (SAFE)
5Late of the Pier
Fantasy Black Channel

Mort.: “Broken”

Not really that psychedelic pop. Almost more dance punk? I’ll be kind and count it since I guess the synths are almost psychedelic. Can’t say I’m super engaged by this though. Wait okay, this ending is trippy. Pretty good ending, very glitchy. Not super into most of this though.

3/5 (SAFE)
6Psychedelic Porn Crumpets
Shyga! The Sunlight Mound

AsleepInTheBack: “Mundungus”

Not too into that guitar texture and the shredding isn’t my thing. I wanted pop honestly -that’s the mood I set my brain up for. My best advice to everyone is to follow the prompt closely cuz it’ll match my mood lol. Still fits the theme, but not in a way I enjoy. This is whatever. Too much fuzz and rawk, not enough reverb or backmasking or pretty soundscapes.

2.5/5 (ELIMINATED!)
7The Millennium
Begin

JohnnyoftheWell: “It Won't Always Be the Same”

Ooh pretty harmonies. And I like the acoustic guitar. Feels kinda sunshine pop even, which I’m mixed on. But I do like this.

3.6/5 (SAFE)
8Jellyfish
Spilt Milk

Kompys2000: “Russian Hill”

Emotional and wish pretty strings. Pretty orchestrals strings are usually a fantastic thing! Maybe always? At least for psychedelia. Oooh and flute. County twang in the background works too. Is that acoustic bass guitar? Interesting song for sure! I’m digging it.

4.5/5 (SAFE)
9Kylie Minogue
Kylie Minogue

SlothcoreSam: “Confide in Me”

More pretty strings, but they’re also serious sounding. A tirp hop beat? Hmmm. Sounds more like Arabic folk mixed with trip hop. But it’s good, so I’m not too bothered. I might subtract 0.5 for not giving be any REAL psychedelic feel. Yell at me if you must, but please don’t stretch the definitione too much.

3.6/5 -0.5 = 3.1/5 (SAFE)
10The Dukes Of Stratosphear
Chips from the Chocolate Fireball

Porcupinetheater: “Little Lighthouse”

Oh yeah, XTC’s side project. Very 80s psych. Has the Lennon-McCartney harmonies. Really wears that influence on its sleeve. Good, but not amazing.

3.4/5 (SAFE)
11Crumb (USA-NY)
Jinx

Trifolium: “Nina”

I’m already a Crumb fan, but lucky for you I haven’t heard Jinx! Secretly a smart avenue to go by picking an already approved artist haha. Good drums for sure. Her voice rules and it’s chill, but in a memorable way.

3.9/5 (SAFE)
12Evan Geesman
Newagesewage

PotsyTater: “English"

Definitely hits that hypnagogic pop thing that modern psych-pop drifts too. Electronic chill beat driven stuff. His voice is soulful and the atmosphere is loungy, but the kind you sink into the couch with. Maybe a bit more stripped back than I tend to love within this genre though.

3.3/5 (SAFE)
13Moon Diagrams
Lifetime of Love

someone: “End of Heartache”

This also hits that hypnagogic pop category, so yeah it’s psych pop, just a modern interpretation. I like the slacker vocals and the catchy piano. In fact, a lot of this works. Does that rest of thi sound nothing like this? Because the album is labeled ambient techno haha. Good shit though, regardless. Spooky outro!

4.1/5 (SAFE)
14Various Artists (Rock)
Rough Guide To Psychedelic Cambodia

ffs: “Phaem Nas Snaeha” (by Pan Ron)

This is badass. I already love this one other Cambodian psych rock song and this one track is just as cool. It’s catchy, cute, fun, colorful! I wouldn’t change a thing!

4.7/5 (SAFE)
15Simon Dupree And The Big Sound
Part Of My Past (The Simon Dupree And The Big Sou

protokute: “Kites”

Bright plinky piano and nostalgic 60s style vocals. Good start. Sensual too actually. I like this. Could be better, but I don’t know how haha. Maybe a little better production? Still good.

3.9/5 (SAFE)
16Dogbowl
Cyclops Nuclear Submarine Captain

GhandhiLion: “South American Eye”

Pretty guitar, and very 90s indie. Simple, but effective to say the least.

3.7/5 (SAFE)
17Moses Gunn Collective
Mercy Mountain

Conmaniac: “Shalala”

I like the production. Modern, but still has a bit of old school to it. It’s a bit empty sounding for my taste, but decent all the same.

3.3/5 (SAFE)
18Super Furry Animals
Rings Around the World

BitterJalapenoJr: “Sidewalk Serfer Girl”

Sounds like a trippy Blur song. The guitar pickups are okay, and the vocals are good. I’m mixed on it this honestly, but it isn’t bad.

3.4/5 (SAFE)
19Yves Tumor
Heaven To A Tortured Mind

BlazingBlitzer: “Kerosene!”

Good drums, good atmophere. I don’t like the male vocals. The female vocals are decent. More interested than anything I remember from Safe in the Hands of Love, but the voice kills it for me.

2.9/5 (SAFE)
20DJ Harvey
The Sound of Mercury Rising

CamiloG: “Magnificent Moon”

Sounds like a clubbier version of a Camel instrumental haha. The vocals, I suppose are pretty typical of modern psych pop. Maybe moe nu-disco, but it’s close enough. That being said, I don’t really get much from this. Kind of long for what it is, but I can do long. I suppose it’ growing on me a bit.

3.4/5 (SAFE)
21Connan Mockasin
Forever Dolphin Love

fogza: “Please Turn Me into the Snat”

Finally some cool vocal modulation! Good drums too. Very English-quirky if you know what I mean. It’s intense, but also kind of goofy. Does fogza know my taste, interesting? This is like bang on.

4.9/5 (ROUND WINNER! [+0.5 will be added to his next round score])
22Mansun
Six

MoM: “Fall Out”

I’m sorry, nutcracker music as a beat? Why? Oh thank god it’s gone. This went from awful to pretty okay. Didn’t wow me once it dropped the nutcracker BS though.

2.7/5 (ELIMINATED!)
23Snowmine
Laminate Pet Animal

JeffereyPiggletein: “The Hill”

Vocals sound like Panda Bear. Good use of atmosphere even if it’s a tad generic. Wait, those string samples or whatever were very good. Not bad. It definitely found itself by the end despite a slow start.

3.6/5 (SAFE)
24Jacco Gardner
Cabinet of Curiosities

Pangea: “The Ballad of Little Jane”

This guy thinks he’s Syd Barett haha. First song with a mellotron, wow that’s surprising that it took this long. Pretty, cute, and I like the vocals!

4/5 (SAFE)
25Pepe Deluxe
Queen of the Wave

Havey: “Go Supersonic”

Reminds me of 60s female led psych-pop, but sped the fuck up. And now it’s extra poppy. The strings are cool, but not as lush as they could be. Almost feel power poppish? Good, but not amazing. Theremin creepy vibes are always a good thing, do it up outro!
