Recs for garas

I asked user garas if I could rec his some music that's out of his comfort zone (as in non-metal and non-ambient) and he said 15-20 albums, so I went with 15. He also asked for all albums to be under 2 hours, which is fair.
1The Avalanches
Since I Left You

Genre: Plunderphonics/Electronic
Year: 2000
Runtime: 61 minutes
Why I chose it: I wanted to rec a little of everything and this helps fill out that qualification.

garas's thoughts:
rating: 4.0
I used to listen to a lot of downtempo back in the days, so it was a very pleasant surprise and I enjoyed it. Very chill, and the variety within is really outstanding. As I said in my soundoff: "Bar background music: the album." - because it's totally like that.
2Big Black
Songs About Fucking

Genre: Noise rock/post-hardcore
Year: 1987
Runtime: 32 minutes
Why I chose it: He likes extreme metal, so maybe he'll like some heavier punky stuff?

garas's thoughts:
Rating 2.5
I'm sorry, but I did not really like it. The guitar was crispy and nice, but all in all it's not my thing, I guess.
3Erykah Badu
New Amerykah Pt. One: 4th World War

Genre: Neo-soul
Year: 2008
Runtime: 59 minutes
Why I chose it: Felt like there wasn't enough 2000s stuff on here and this is a cool album.

garas's thoughts:
rating: 3.0
It was alright. I liked the slower, chill songs the most, but I wasn't hooked by it that much to feel "I want to jam this again". Bonus points for the good samples!
4Foetus
Nail

Genre: Industrial/Post-Punk
Year: 1985
Runtime: 40 minutes
Why I chose it: There's a metal atmosphere on here, but not really any metal instrumentation. Plus industrial seems like a comfortable step from metal and ambient.

garas's thoughts:
rating: 3.5
Great album, not that weird like what I expected. The full instrumental songs were the best imo (the opener was SO great!), and I liked the rest of it too, however I found one-two songs a bit annoying and overlong. The vocals are nice and wild, fits very well to this style. And the various samples sounded simply awesome, nice work!

And one extra thing: this sounded so much like one of my dad's favourite artist - even though I can't remember who that guy is, haha! But I know he's a Christian musician, who also makes such "theatrical" pieces, and uses very similar samples too, so I had a bit "nostalgic" feelings when I've listened to this.
5Herbie Hancock
Head Hunters

Genre: Jazz fusion/funk
Year: 1973
Runtime: 42 minutes
Why I chose it: He likes complex instrumental stuff, so maybe he could like jazz fusion? I don't know. He once said he liked funk too.

garas's thoughts:
rating: 3.0
I liked the "slower" sections the most, and sadly I can't rate this higher than 3.0 since I did not like the two songs in the middle. So it is literally a "good" album.
6Kate Bush
Hounds of Love

Genre: Progressive pop
Year: 1985
Runtime: 47 minutes
Why I chose it: It's a classic and pretty much everyone likes this one.

garas's thoughts:
rating: 4.5
His soundoff:
The only reason I don't 5.0 this, because I found the B-side generally lot more exciting than the A-side with the so-called "big hits". The album has such an unique atmosphere...! There is so much thing going on, and I greatly admire her imagination. Like comparing my two favourites from the album ("Watching You Without Me" & "Hello Earth") is already odd enough, because they're so different, but still feel connected... by her voice and her fantasy. Ah, this is simply a fascinating release.

(+ young Kate Bush was HOT)
7The Knife
Shaking the Habitual

Genre: Electronic/Everything
Year: 2013
Runtime: 96 minutes
Why I chose it: Because it's a crazy album with various different styles and if he hates that, there's a long ambient break in the middle.

garas's thoughts:
rating: 2.0
I really hated this one. The big ambient track wasn't that cool... But: I really dig the second half of it. Sorry, but it was a hit'n'miss. 2.0
8Mercury Rev
Yerself Is Steam

Genre: Indie Rock/Neo-Psychedelia/Noise pop
Year: 1991
Runtime: 55 minutes
Why I chose it: It jams, but it's also super mellow. Something old, something new.

garas's thoughts:
Rating: 3.0
It was an interesting one. I'm not the greatest fan of it, because I didn't like especially the first half, and some of these songs were a bit too long for my taste. One other thing which lowered my final score is the vocals... too much false notes, man. The slower, mellow sections were pretty enjoyable though, and that made it a quite relaxing listen while working.
9The Mothers of Invention
One Size Fits All

Genre: Progressive Rock/Jazz Fusion
Year: 1975
Runtime: 43 minutes
Why I chose it: He specifically asked for a Frank Zappa album and this is my 2nd favorite (he'd hate my favorite...)

garas's thouhts:
Rating: 3.5
It was...quite fun. When it got prog, jazzy and bluesy I really liked it. The rest was...okay.
10Mr. Bungle
California

Genre: Rock/Pop/Everything
Year: 1999
Runtime: 44 minutes
Why I chose it: Because it has metal on it, but it also has every genre ever on it.

garas's thoughts
Rating: 3.5
Mr. Bungle - California
Entertaining album, for sure. I get it why do people *love* it, but that's why I "just like it". Playful and exciting, but maybe it's a bit too much at once. I can totally see myself returning to this time to time, but it won't become a regular jam for me.
A strong 3.5, because I actually enjoyed it all the way through!
11of Montreal
Satanic Panic in the Attic

Genre: Indie Pop/Psychedelic Pop
Year: 2004
Runtime: 44 minutes
Why I chose it: Because it's fun and catchy, which doesn't sound like garas' taste at all. Maybe it can change that.
12PJ Harvey
To Bring You My Love

Genre: Alternative rock/blues rock
Year: 1995
Runtime: 43 minutes
Why I chose it: It's my 2nd favorite album of all time and a bonafide masterpiece. Maybe he'll like how dark and gloomy it is.
13Robert Wyatt
Rock Bottom

Genre: Progressive rock/jazz fusion
Year: 1974
Runtime: 40 minutes
Why I chose it: It's weird, but proggy, maybe it'll get him into another side of prog?
14Stevie Wonder
Innervisions

Genre: Soul/Funk
Year: 1973
Runtime: 44 minutes
Why I chose it: Yet again, it's a very easy album to love and a hard one to hate.
15Van Morrison
Astral Weeks

Genre: Folk/Soul/Baroque Pop
Year: 1968
Runtime: 47 minutes
Why I chose it: Another classic that is very different from garas' typical taste.
