Umbrella Contest 2020 Round 8: Belle Umbrella

2 more out, and 11 still in!
1Wilco
Being There

1. Link a song via YouTube, Spotify, Soundcloud, Bandcamp, DailyMotion, Vimeo... or whatever you like as long as I don't have to download something.

2. The genre this round is country. Everything from traditional country and western, to bluegrass, to country pop to americana. Country rock, including: southern rock, cowpunk, alt. country, and rockabilly is also fine.

3. Aim to impress me with what you pick, since I'm rating these.

4. If I know the song already, I'll tell you to pick something new, otherwise you're good.

5. I'm going to start each new round every Tuesday night, so if you're late, you're out.

***The winner can recommend me whatever album blah blah you know***
2Digable Planets
Reachin' (A New Refutation of Time and Space)

Minushuman24
“Escapism”

Cool samples. Is that a sped up flute from “Watermelon Man?” Wait, that's the keys from “Watermelon Man” too! This is pretty chill stuff with good bass, good drums, and a good sample. Digable Planets is one of those groups I could see myself getting into. Abrupt ending? Hmm eh that’s okay.

3.8/5 (Passed to next round)
3Eazy-E
Str8 off tha Streetz of Muthaphukkin...

budgie
“Gangsta Beat 4tha Street”

This is pleasant enough. The vocals are shouted, but it still manages to feel pretty calm and flowy. Can’t say I find this to be too interesting. It keeps changing the person rapping and I’m like “eh does this 3-minute song really need 3 features?” Not for me, but not bad.

3/5 (Passed to next round)

Yancey Boys

Lord(e)Po)))ts
“All Good”

The trumpet sample sounds a little like a cartoon fart sound effect, but I like creaking sound and the organ sample. The rapping is well, I don’t know, rapping. Nothing annoying, but not too memorable either. This is pretty decent except for one farting thing. If that sound effect wasn’t so persistent throughout the song, it’d get a higher score.

2.8/5 (Passed to next round)

What's Real...

dedex
“Blue Avenue”

I like the drums and flute samples. It’s simple and enjoyable. Not much else to say about this. I won’t lie though, I listened to your Tribe song too and it got a higher score than this.

3.3/5 (Passed to next round)
6Souls of Mischief
93 'til Infinity

Sinternet
“93 til infinity”

Faster than other songs chosen so far. The main guy’s voice is pretty nasal. The background pano is kinda meh and the percussion is nice. I find myself most drawn to the percussion this round. This works pretty well.

3.3/5 (Passed to next round)
7Pete Philly and Perquisite
Mindstate

Trifolium
“Insomnia”

This is chill rapping and bass wise, nothing too ear catching. Not sure I really like the singing though, it reminds me of soggy cereal. This was mostly plain with ugly singing.

2.5/5 (ELIMINATED!)
8Moloko
Do You Like My Tight Sweater?

Zig
“Fun for Me”

Ah trip hop, nice. I mean the drums are hip hop, so I’ll count this, but this is a fairly cheap shot. This is fairly goofy lyrically, almost like a parody of Portishead done by SNL or something. “I dreamed I was an ostrich” sure you did… this is fun as hell, but is this hip hop enough to be a fair submission? Eh probably. If determined that it isn’t you still have enough points to reach next round anyway

4.2/5 (3.2/5 if other participants think this shouldn’t have counted) (Passed to next round)

bgillesp
“Walking in the Snow

A chopped up horror movie intro or? Damn, this is loud and airy sounding. Man, so much is going on, but all of it is boring. Is it just me, but is the pattern he’s rapping in just so typical of 2010s hip hop in the most boring way. This is like ADHD music for people who only like pop. “First of all, they cheated (Haha) 'Cause they, one of 'em black and the other one white (Uh-huh) So if you don't like 'em, you automatically racist (Ah, oh, well)” What an awful lyric to end a song on. Like the song is so bad, they gotta guilt you into liking it.

2/5 (ELIMINATED)
10Typhoon (NL)
Lobi Da Basi

Pangea
“Zandloper”

No idea what this guy is saying, but the reggae beat is different. The trumpet is cool here and there’s some emotional singing here that almost feels theatrical maybe? This is fine I guess, not for me, but I didn’t hate it either.

2.6/5 (Passed to next round)
11Madlib
Shades of Blue

Ryus
“Distant Land”

Unlike Divaman, I like some “old timey record scritches” (Diva’s words, not mine in quotes.) They add a lot of atmosphere it invoke that weird “nostalgic vibe, but new song” vibe hip hop seems to go for every now and then. The trumpets are mad jazzy here and I think I heard some turntables? Regardless, all of it sounds lovely and like it’d make for a good trip hop backing. Regardless: this is awesome.

4.4/5 (ROUND WINNER, handicap (for others) of +.05 for the next round)
12Joan Jett and the Blackhearts
Album

garas
“Eff Grandad” by Thugnificent (from the show The Boondocks)

Here we go. Oh no it’s 2000s style hip hop. The flutes and synth strings are hilarious parody though. This is damn stupid, but also intentionally funny. Sure why not.

3/5 (Passed to next round)
13Organized Konfusion
Organized Konfusion

GhandhiLion
“Roosevelt Franklin”

Now this sounds old school. Fast-paced, energetic, dancy drums, man he’s speaking too fast for me to follow the lyrics. This feels chaotic, but I like the saxophone and the chanting. “I’m so confused” I feel validated by that lyric right now. Sure, this is cool.

3.5/5 (Passed to next round)
14UGK
Super Tight...

NeroCorleone
It's Supposed to Bubble

Funky background music with vocals I don’t particularly care for. The piano solo at the end is nice though.

3.1/5 (+.5 for winning last round) = 3.6/5 (Passed to next round)
