06.30.20 | Sad days!!!!!! It was fun while it lasted. |
dedex
06.30.20 | shit, should've stayed with ATCQ |
dedex
06.30.20 | Country?! imma get eliminated fr |
garas
06.30.20 | LOL, I'm still in hehe. I'm glad you appreciated the fun factor in Thugnificent, though! :]
Country??? Fuck noooooooooooooooooooo. |
Pangea
06.30.20 | Hell yeah just barely survived again |
dedex
06.30.20 | pretty sure you already listened to that one but I'm snatching it before someone else does:
Johnny Cash - Hurt

Ryus
06.30.20 | country hell yeah
ars with the right take about rtj |
garas
06.30.20 | My rec: West End Motel - Not Messing Around
https://youtu.be/_crw3Zgde3w
Brent Hinds's (Mastodon) other band, they play pretty chill country rock. I'm not really into country music, but even I can say his guitar talent really shines in this band too. |
Minushuman24
06.30.20 | That hot take on "Walking in the Snow" is rough tbh |
dedex
06.30.20 | "Like the song is so bad, they gotta guilt you into liking it."
never change Ars < 3 |
Minushuman24
06.30.20 | Country... HMMM. This may take a while, because I have a feeling ars doesn't like modern bluegrass |
Ryus
06.30.20 | ars you suspiciously have no neil young ratings
is there anything by him youve heard |
ArsMoriendi
06.30.20 | @dedex: I know his rendition of Hurt
@Ryus: I know a good amount of his hits. Old Man, Heart of Gold, Hey Hey My My(both versions,) Needle and the Damage Done, Cinnamon Girl, I’ve Been Waiting for You. No full albums of his though |
Minushuman24
06.30.20 | Gotta rec him Tell Me Why |
Minushuman24
06.30.20 | I'm gonna go with cowpunk I think.
She's Like Heroin - The Gun Club

ArsMoriendi
06.30.20 | I actually know that one Minus |
Minushuman24
06.30.20 | I probably shouldn't be surprised about that, do you know more Gun Club than that? |

06.30.20 | eh should've guessed
uuuuuuh we'll go with Swans - It's Coming It's Real

ArsMoriendi
06.30.20 | @dedex: How is this country? I don't hear it at all |
budgie
06.30.20 | oh geez |
Minushuman24
06.30.20 | uh oh |
dedex
06.30.20 | but you accepted trip hop!!!!
ok, gonna come back with another rec another day |
Minushuman24
06.30.20 | It is always so hard to chose for ars, because whatever I think is a safe choice ends up not being a safe choice. I've been cycling through the same Gun Club, X, and Cramps songs for about an hour and I think I'm just gonna go with some wilco-esque country rock
Waiting for the Sun - The Jayhawks
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zMFtkubNF4Q |
NeroCorleone
06.30.20 | we have a week to rec, dont know why everyone is in a rush |
budgie
06.30.20 | reminder to everyone, ars has some love for mazzy star and so that sound might be a good direction go shoot for with that americana angle |
Zig
06.30.20 | Maybe a poor choice of mine. Anyway, here's my rec for this one
Eugene Chadbourne - Honey Don't
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wrd4vmkokLw |

06.30.20 | who doesn't love mazzy star tho |

Lord(e)Po)))ts
06.30.20 | I should know better by now than to rec you anything but goofy stupid shit |
Trifolium
06.30.20 | Yeah goofy is the way to go. I failed at doing that this round. Should indeed have gone for something more trip-hoppy probably. Oh well! 7 rounds isn't bad! |
Divaman
06.30.20 | >Unlike Divaman, I like some “old timey record scritches” (Diva’s words, not mine in quotes.)
That's because you weren't around when that was all there was. |
Lord(e)Po)))ts
06.30.20 | Here's some goofy stupid shit. Progressive Bluegrass lol.

budgie
06.30.20 | by old timey record scritches are you talking about surface noise or record scratching
btw i listened to #11 and it is fucking amazing |
Divaman
06.30.20 | I don't know that that's true, is it? Over mp3's? A lot of the people I know who buy vinyl records don't actually play them - they just collect it. Also not sure if vinyl records are made better today. |
Lord(e)Po)))ts
06.30.20 | "I don't know that that's true, is it? Over mp3's? "
lol over mp3's? yes are you kidding. there are probably audiophiles out there that prefer FLAC to vinyl but mp3's are not good.
"A lot of the people I know who buy vinyl records don't actually play them"
your generation thinks CDs are a good format tho
"Also not sure if vinyl records are made better today."
production quality has improved. that will translate regardless of vinyl quality. there has always been good and bad vinyl quality. one of the only notable differences i'd mention is that you can get heavy weight vinyl now which means they last longer and are sturdier. but that is the only benefit. most people feel this durability comes at the cost of sound quality. |
ArsMoriendi
06.30.20 | @budgie: surface noise, I believe
It'd be weird if Diva (or I) meant record scratching |
ArsMoriendi
06.30.20 | Sometimes modern production bothers me because it sounds like there's a bunch of empty space between each instrument/timbre and I guess I like when things sound denser
It's hard to explain since I know jackshit about audio production, but it only seems to happen with stuff after like 2007 |
loveisamixtape
06.30.20 | ur bothered by cold digital compression |
budgie
06.30.20 | i love this discussion
surface noise can usually be prevented if you clean the record and treat it well, but sometimes a new record will have regardless, idk if that's because of the plant used or what |
loveisamixtape
06.30.20 | also just realized the circumstances of this uhhh competition bc i haven’t seen these before but since it doesn’t matter, this song too https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=WwE5hUx2lMs bye |
ArsMoriendi
06.30.20 | Yeah sorry loveisamixtape, you can link whatever you want, but it won't count for the comp :P
-
Surface noise on certain songs make it feel warm and authentic
For instance, "Cowboys" by Portishead without all of those little crackles and pops wouldn't be nearly as good as it is. I guess a lot of hip hop/trip hop in general is known for incorporating it on purpose |
loveisamixtape
06.30.20 | i linked two country songs i rly like that i find to be slept on u should check em out |
Divaman
06.30.20 | I'm kind of falling asleep at our own conversation here, but just for the hell of it, of the people on this list, how many listen to their music primarily in vinyl? |
Lord(e)Po)))ts
06.30.20 | primary format isn't indicative of preferred format though. you cant play records in your car, on your phone, on the go, you have to get up and flip that shit so it's not conducive to passive listening, you can't make playlists, your library is physical etc...
it's an inconvenient format. but it's still my favourite format and it sounds the best. primary intake is digital but the reason for that is evident enough. |
Sinternet
06.30.20 | I consider that rating sacrilege but at least it passed.
Ill go for drive-by truckers - little bonnie as a placeholder for now |
budgie
06.30.20 | i don't think vinyl as a medium intrinsically! sounds the best. but i can say that the best audio reproduction i've heard has all been from vinyl, though, for example: a mercyful fate record i have from the early 80s, even a saxon record from the early 80s, VH, all sounds incredibly life-like, it's jaw dropping. but there is the real risk of getting some records that sound worse than youtube uploads. i have a witchfynde record from back on black, which is a notorious company, and it sounds fucking horrible. point being i think the master matters more than the medium, and old vinyl for some reason just have the best masters
one thing i've found for sure when comparing vinyl/digital is the nature of vinyl causes some of the upper register to be lost in translation, which usually means you can play music louder before encountering shrill treble, though that is at the cost of a loss of detail, but i think in most cases it's worth it. also maybe explains why people call vinyl "warmer" or "smoother." i've heard some people saying this is really important for electronic music as it can sound "cold and clinical" out of the studio and the distortion, noise, effects of dragging a needle across the vinyl, and treble-muting improves the overall sound. but that's not my genre |
Lord(e)Po)))ts
06.30.20 | you're right it doesn't intrinsically sound the best there are certain genres that sound god tier on it (hip-hop, jazz) and ones that it's completely wasted on (modern metal, other overproduced drivel) but genres that sound bad on vinyl are shit genres anyway |
ArsMoriendi
06.30.20 | Using this link: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0RkZZnp-n-s for Sint's rec |
budgie
06.30.20 | i feel that |
Lord(e)Po)))ts
06.30.20 | this is going to break diva's balls but i vastly prefer cassettes to cd's too
cd's are the wooooorrrrrssst |
loveisamixtape
06.30.20 | i have more cassettes than anything else. not rich enough to collect vinyl |
Lord(e)Po)))ts
06.30.20 | Lol yeah I collected the most vinyl when I lived at home and thus had lots of disposable income |
Divaman
06.30.20 | I've replaced my entire music collection three times. I replaced vinyl with cassettes, cassettes with CDs, and CDs with mp3 files. Each was an improvement. (But I'm more concerned with convenience and durability than with anything else). |
budgie
06.30.20 | my audio is all digital now basically, but all i ever listen to is ambient nowadays and that's not on vinyl so idk |
Lord(e)Po)))ts
06.30.20 | reverse that and you've got it nailed
although I'll take mp3s over CDs because CDs are just embarrassing unless they are burned mix CDs for your car |
loveisamixtape
06.30.20 | i’ve always had a weird thing for used cd bins and sifting through lots of bullshit to find even one gem |
Lord(e)Po)))ts
06.30.20 | jewel cases
*shudders* |
budgie
06.30.20 | cracked plastic jewel cases give me ptsd |
Divaman
06.30.20 | I still listen to CDs in my car, but I mostly listen to mp3s. The only thing I've ever missed about vinyl is the album covers. |
loveisamixtape
06.30.20 | i’ve stepped on every jewel case i’ve ever owned |
loveisamixtape
06.30.20 | yeah honestly the coolest thing about vinyl to me always has been the super big album artwork |
Divaman
06.30.20 | I don't mind jewel cases. I just hate those sticky labels they put on them that you have you peel off the open them. The guy who invented those should be eviscerated. |
Divaman
06.30.20 | Well yeah, cracked ones suck. |
Minushuman24
06.30.20 | I use Spotify primarily, but I listen to vinyl a healthy amount. it just feels good to listen to |
loveisamixtape
06.30.20 | i usually drink water, but my wife’s boyfriend lets me drink soda on the weekends |
