Umbrella Contest 2020 Round 7: Umbrella Wrapper

2 more out and 13 still in!

1. Link a song via YouTube, Spotify, Soundcloud, Bandcamp, DailyMotion, Vimeo... or whatever you like as long as I don't have to download something.

2. The genre this round is hip hop! While rapping is in most hip hop, not ALL hip hop needs it. Things like record scratching, chopping and screwing, and creative sampling can also make a song hip hop. Gangsta rap, alternative hip hop, trap, most trip-hop, instrumental hip hop, plunderphonics, and even hip hop heavy nu-metal all work.

3. Aim to impress me with what you pick, since I'm rating these.

4. If I know the song already, I'll tell you to pick something new, otherwise you're good.

5. I'm going to start each new round every Tuesday night, so if you're late, you're out.

“A Plague of Lighthouse Keepers”

Twenty-three minutes? Oh great... This reminds me of Camel and King Crimson -two groups I like. And now it’s gotten all spacey with blaring saxophones and train sounds, okay. Six minutes in, and it feels like an inferior King Crimson. The ideas are similarly weird, but less exciting and less crazy. Oh damn here comes the crazy keyboard wankery. Do I like this or? I actually can’t tell. Apparently Robert Fripp is on this album. That makes a ton of sense, actually. Now it’s kinda awesome and trippy (around the 16 and a half mark.) Ultimately, I do like this, but I guess I have less patience for it since I’m listening to it in tandem with other songs. And now for the sophisticated, piano-led, wrap-up. This was all over the place, but also pretty good.

Wrong

Ryus
“The Tower”

Nice bass, nice overall energy. I’ve heard songs by these guys before and have enjoyed them, but never checked any full albums by them. Yeah, this is fun as hell, well instrumented, and the vocals fit the song perfectly. Good stuff.

4Dersu Uzala
Tempus Fugit

Lord(e)Po)))ts
“All Is Not Lost”

Okay, so far this is very slow and soundscape. Okay, yeah this is rock, and yeah in a Floyd way. It’s got a nice groove and all, but it’s not really too memorable.

“Youth of America”

Okay punky so far. A long punk jam is a pretty odd idea, but not really I guess because Patti Smith has done it. Nice shredding, but I kinda wish the bass and drums weren’t doing that same thing they were doing 5 minutes ago. Okay song, but I wish it had more going for it other than just the guitar. Ten minutes of just guitar shredding is rarely my thing. Maybe a quick drum solo ever now and then could’ve helped?

budgie
“Virginia Plain”

Fun keys and vocals. Prime 70s goof rock. It’s like the glam period of Brian Eno with different vocals. Which makes sense because he’s on keys here haha. Classic as hell.

7Viagra Boys
Street Worms

Minushuman24
“Slow Learner”

This is pretty dancy, isn’t it? The vocals are meh, but that main groove works (if not a little bit generic.) I like it, but I certainly don’t love it.

3.5/5 (+.5 for winning last round) = 4/5 (Passed to next round)
8Drive Like Jehu
Yank Crime

dedex
“Luau”

Ugh, those vocals are not for me. The guitar is cool, but the bass is mixed a bit low. Wait, there’s a bass now that the guitar got clean. Good lyrics though. All about how explorers cruelly conquered Hawaii. The instrumentation and lyrics almost make up for how much I dislike the vocals, but not quite.

3.4/5 (Passed to next round)
9Preoccupations
Viet Cong

Pangea
“Bunker Buster”

Kinda basic stuff so far. A bit abrasive, but mostly just radio rock post-punk revival sounding. The solo section was the best part, but I’m not feeling this one at all.

3/5 (Passed to next round)
10Stereolab
Mars Audiac Quintet

Trifolium
“Ping Pong”

Am I at the beach right now? The vocals remind me of the female vocalist from Thinking Fellers Union Local 282, in a good way. Those keys are so surfy though, seriously. This is super lively and indie and I instantly like it. Stereolab is another band on my endless “I should get around to these guys” list.

4.3/5 (Passed to next round)
11White Lies
Ritual

Uzumaki
“Bigger Than Us”

Ew, so I was half joking about the Viet Cong song being radio rock, but this one is literally just straight up radio rock. Every instrument here, including the vocals, is so bland. Gooey, “inspirational,” and milquetoast.

2.4/5 (ELIMINATED)
12Deafheaven
Sunbather

garas
“Honey Comb”

Okay so there’s backmasking, cool cool.… and then just GROWL LOUD WALL OF SOUND GUITARS. This is black metal, alright. Kinda funny how this “blackgaze” sounds more audible than typical black metal when shoegaze is kinda famous for making regular rock be less audible. When the screaming goes away, it sounds more like regular heavy metal, is that weird? The jam at the end is the best part, but it’s still hardly my thing. Not the worst black metal song I’ve ever heard, but that isn’t saying much.

2.7/5 (Passed to next round)
13Cardiacs
Sing to God

bgillesp
“Eat It Up Worms Hero”

Oh hey, it’s that band on the Sporkcore shitposting charts that I’ve never listened to. Damn, this is heavier than I was expecting for them, based on the album cover. Chopped up pig squeal samples? What the hell? The vocals are ugly, but kinda unique? Screaming, then jolly piano. Yup this is a “so random haha” band. It doesn’t sound as calculated as Mr. Bungle though, which is a huge negative. I’m not impressed by this honestly, but it’s not terrible.

2.9/5 (Passed to next round)
14Gentle Giant
Gentle Giant

Zig
“Alucard”

I have The Power and the Glory 4’d, so this is a fairly safe choice. The horns and synths work together to create this epic fanfare feel to it. I like the change in dynamics. This is how you do noodling/wankey correctly: no overutilization of any one instrument, multiple instruments get to wank. Yeah, this is cool.

3.9/5 (Passed to next round)
15Violent Soho
Violent Soho

ReturnToRock
“Jesus Stole My Girlfriend”

Well ain’t this super 90s alternative rock. Probably better than most grunge revival stuff I heard since he’s got some personality in his vocals, but the guitar and drums are fairly uninteresting. The bass? I can’t even hear it. This is on the better side of radio rock, but hardly.

2.6/5 (ELIMINATED)
16Chrome
Half Machine Lip Moves

NeroCorleone
“Zombie Warfare (Can't Let You Down)”

Wait, this is just jamming so far and I’m in 2 minutes, but it’s good jamming. Wait a sudden change haha! Weird psychedelic noises? Nice. This just went from “good jam” or “weird as shit banger.” Nero has an advantage this round. The dude knows exactly what kinda rock I like.

4.7/5 (ROUND WINNER, handicap (for others) of +.05 for the next round)
