08.02.19 | "My Name Is Ruin"
Very industrial opening. The vocals are autotuned? Hmm I don't like that. The beat is cool though. Clearly, this is inspired by NIN's Downward Spiral, which is neat because Trent Reznor was inspired by Numan's early work. It reminds me of "Closer" a lot, but less sexual I suppose. Kinda derivative, but still good.
3.4/5 |
SlothcoreSam
08.02.19 | Paranoid Android, 4.1. 80% of this song is God-slapping good.
My Name Is Ruin, 3.6. it's a little industrial, a little synth-pop, and a whole lot of NIN sounding. Gazza looks good for a 60 year old. Not quite pandering as hard as half of NIN's catalogue would. But still was a good listen. |
Divaman
08.02.19 | Radiohead - 3.9 - Good song. |

08.02.19 | On "My Name Is Ruin," the girl is Numan's daughter, who was about 11 at the time of the song/video. When I saw him live, she came out and sang it with him. The little girl has a big voice. |
SlothcoreSam
08.02.19 | Only 11, that's crazy. She looks and sounds a lot older. |
Trifolium
08.02.19 | Paranoid Android: Great track, but it isn't even near one of my faves by them. Still, when you hear this live something clicks and you want it to never end. 4.5
My Name Is Ruin: This was cool. You've got guts reccing something other than a track with an undisputably good reputation. 3.5
Born Slippy: How's that for pandering!? The best entry man, oof. Still gets whole fields of people extatic, and will do so forevermore. 5.0
The Great Gig In The Sky: Yup, another classic. Spacey, progressive goodness. 5.0
Crosseyed And Painless: Might be their best album, the hype is justified. Stone cold classic. 5.0

3/5
"The Great Gig in the Sky"
Well, this is a certified brilliant track. Claire Tony's voice is powerful and the guitar is so bluesy and pretty. And of course, that piano that persists is haunting in a great way. This some does make me think of heaven too, so the intention works perfectly as well.

08.06.19 | The Talking Heads - 3.2 - The Talking Heads are alright, and so is the song. |
Minushuman24
08.06.19 | 1. Paranoid Android - Radiohead - A solid choice I'd say, but this track has always been super middle of the pack for me. It wears on my super hard after just a few plays, and now it's one I always skip, but still a great song. 3.5
2. My Name Is Ruin - Gary Numan - Never would have thought that post "cars" Numan would be considered a pandering choice, but alrighty. I believe he played a lot of this when I saw him a year or two ago. But that's okay, because as it was pointed out in this thread already, it is very NIN influenced. And I am a slut for NIN. 3.4
3. Born Slippy - Underworld - I've never seen Trainspotting. But I really enjoyed the first 1:45 of this. 3.2
5. Glory Box - Portishead - This is the best Portishead track, and really it's not even remotely close. I really don't see how it can get any sort of mixed reaction, it's such a sultry track. Fuck. 4.8
6. Crosseyed and Painless - Talking Heads - I need to spend more time with the talking heads, I always say I'm going to and I don't. This is just a really nice jam, reminds me of bowie a bit. 3.9 |

08.06.19 | Fuck it, I'm gonna do the rest of the songs cause lord knows I won't do them later on.
7. (Here It Comes Your) 19th Nervous Breakdown - The Rolling Stones - Is this an early stones song? because this is so much better than a lot of the mediocre music they were putting out at the time. 3.9
8. Eternally You - The Saints - I dig the riff in this a lot, it's got that early punk/hard rock feel to it. All of this is pretty standard for the genre at the time, and I think I'd listen to this on morning drives to class alongside Richard Hell and Mott the Hoople. 3.7 |

Only like my 6th favorite song on Dummy, but Dummy is a hard 5 soooo. Beautiful strings, emotional vocals, and catchy hip hop drums. How could someone not love this? She's exhausted from trying to find love (isn't that relatable?) THIS IS THE BEGINNING OF FOREVER AND EVER!
4.8/5
"Crosseyed and Painless"
This is actually my favorite Talking Heads song, and they're one of my favorite bands, so that says a lot. Afrobeat influenced funk, a deep thumping bass, cowbell heavy percussion. Weird lyrics about being paranoids about facts. CHANGING MY SHAPE, I FEEL LIKE AN ACCIDENT! His falsettos are so airy and fun. STILL WAITING HA HA HA. So many iconic lyrics in this song. The dude even pulls off early 80s rapping well somehow. FACTS ARE SIMPLE FACTS ARE STRAIGHT, FACTS ARE LAZY, FACTS ARE LAME, FACTS DON'T COME WITH POINTS OF VIEW, FACTS DON'T DO WHAT I WANT THEM TO, FACT JUST TWIST TRUTH AROUND, FACTS ARE LIVING TURNED INSIDE OUT, FACTS ARE GETTING THE BEST OF THEM, FACTS ARE NOTHING ON THE FACT OF THINGS. Best track of the month so far.

08.09.19 | "19th Nervous Breakdown"
Very 60s rock, without any sort of tricks or gimmicks. Fine, but not interesting enough for me to give it any high score.

"Know Your Product"
This guy sounds like he's trying to be Iggy Pop vocally. Very straightforward again... nothing unique here either. I mean there are trumpets, but still, they're meh.
2.6/5
"Halah"
I recently made a list of 15 of my all-time favorite songs to share with a friend and this was my #8 on said list. Her gloomy vocals and yearning are at an all-time perfect. The simple folky acoustic guitar might be bland by itself, but when mixed with that countrified electric guitar, the tambourine and that simple it creates this miserable (syrupy?) sentimental dream vibe that makes me wanna lay on my bed staring at the wall. Songs like these make me wish I wasn't single. heh...

The complex and prog metally opening is a bit nerdy for me, but I do like the cello. It does create a cool background ambiance and since it's video game soundtrack music, I suppose that means it's doing its job well. The flutes are neat too. As video game music, I actually quite enjoy this. I wouldn' go out of my way to check this kinda stuff out, but it's refreshing actually.

"Running Up That Hill (A Deal with God)"
Don't pander to me with Kate Bush, that's my job! X( This song rules and all, but there's like 7 songs on Hounds of Love that are better. Seriously, if you wanna pander, you should've picked Cloudbusting, everyone cums from that song. See I love this song though, the idea of wanting to switch bodies with your partner to better understand them is so pure and sweet. The instrumentation is SO stereotypically 80s, more so than the rest of the album, which is probably the worst thing about it, but hey people sure love the 80s don't they? The entire genres of chillave and vaporwave are pretty much 80s worship. Regardless, the drums are simple, but memorable and keep the song going forward in an intense, yet poppy way. An amazing way to open the album with a super memorable premise, chorus, drums, and synths.

08.13.19 | So here's the story on that Nirvana song. I remember Cobain talking about it in an interview one time. (Could have been on MTV's Storytellers, but I think it was earlier than that.)
The song is about an actual day that Kurt remembered when his parents were going out that they left him his grandmother and Grandpa Joe. Grandpa Joe had some mental health issues, and might have even had one floating eye -- in any event, Kurt was a little kid, and Grandpa Joe looked crazy and scary, and Kurt was scared shitless of him. And that's what all the "Grandma, take me home's, and her telling him to stop his crying and go outside and ride his bike was about. In my head, I always hear the chorus as, "Grandma take me, Grandma take me home, don't want to be alone with crazy Grandpa Joe." |

08.14.19 | Sliver, 3.7. Kurt showcasing his vocal skills here. Great build up, and catchy tune.
Running up that hill. 3.5, good but too much downtime on this one. If you cut out some of it, added a bit more loudness, distortion and speed towards the end, then it would be classic.
Nutshell, 3. So that didn't pander to me much at all. I've listened to this album throughout the years but never got into it, i think it's just a bit boring.

08.15.19 | Alice in Chains - 3.6 - I like it. Kind of moody and cool. |

08.15.19 | "The Killing Moon"
So this is a famous post-punk song. Twinkly piano, deep bass, the guitar is acoustic? Something about this song is just so damn boring. If it weren't so famous, I'd argue that there's nothing unique about this song at all, but technically this is the song I'd compare the sea of boring post-punk to and not the other way around. "Damn this generic 2007 post-punk group just sounds like they're rehashing The Killing Moon by Echo and the Bunnymen, meh." +.2 for being the song all of the boring post-punk songs copy.

This guy has been making great music of spiritual exploration for years, and although he has changed somewhat (he no longer wears the Hasidic garb) this is still probably his best track. |
ArsMoriendi
08.17.19 | "West"
Sounds like bland modern pop minus any semblance of catchiness.
2/5
"Video Hits"
Synthy in an 80s worship kinda way. The guitar seems more like an accent to the song than a driving force. Her voice is pleasant enough, but hardly my thing. It makes me think of an 80s vacation movie. Everything except her voice and the synths is mixed way too low. Don't dislike it though I suppose.

08.17.19 | West. 1.6, this is like the opposite of pandering, stabbing porcupine quills into the eye of my penii, best thing about this song is the abrupt ending.
Video hits, 3.0 Back to the 80s with this, vocals are nice, it's OK.
Schizophrenia, 3.3 another band i never got into, even though i listened to then a lot, thanks to other people's obsession. I don't mind the long instrumental outro.
King Without a Crown. 3.5 I own this, lol, completely forgot why i even bought it? Rap rasta flow is excellent, lyrics are not the best. Musically it's strong as well.

ArsMoriendi
08.18.19 | "Schizophrenia"
Great opening riff with a soothing voice. Thurston's voice isn't diverse, but it sure fits the music perfectly. The drums are bouncy, which is always a plus and the lyrics are super cool. I always loved this one, ever since I first checked Sister. The way that solo shreds, but still manages to sound super pretty is impressive for something ao distorted. When Kim's vocals come in it feels even more pretty. Pretty noise, what a concept!

08.18.19 | 10. Star Shopping - Lil Peep - Well, I guess it's finally time to add my first lil peep song to my last.fm library. Now I quite enjoy emo music, even when it's very blunt with little metaphor, but these lyrics are pretty horrid; like impressively bad. His voice isn't bad by any means though, nor is the very simplistic beat. But there's something intrinsically unlikable about this song. Probably the lyrics and probably the last song I'll be logging on last.fm. 2
11. Tristram - Matt Uelman - The old farming grounds. Diablo 2 has remained one of my all time favorite games ever since my step brother showed me it and I created my barbarian to clear the den of evil some 15 years ago. Every time I would load the game I would go to Tristram to farm and level up because I was deathly afraid of what lurked further in the game, and in the catacombs. Andariel gave me nightmares when I finally gained the courage to fight her. I actually hadn't beaten the game all the way up until two months ago, and it was a highlight of my summer finally slaying Baal and beating the game that was such an important part of my childhood. Anyway. Yeah, uh, I love this song and this game 4.2
12. Silver - Nirvana - Classic Nirvana song right here. Pretty simple, fun to sing along to, fun to listen to. 3.6
13. Running Up That Hill - Kate Bush - The first time I've (knowingly) heard a Kate Bush song here. It's not quite what I was expecting, but I really like this melody and I will absolutely come back to this song in the near future. 3.9
14. The Killing Moon - Echo & The Bunnymen - This is just a perfect song, pure and simple. It was the theme the Fall of 2016 for me where I started to come into myself, and since then it has become one of my all time favorite songs. Perfection. 5

Minushuman24
08.18.19 | 15. Nutshell - Alice in Chains - It's been a hot minute since I've listened to Alice in Chains. They were fundamental in my high school years in discovering music and evolving into the person that I am today. They have fallen to the wayside over the years in favor for, I guess, newer bands. When the familiar opening chords began I felt a sinking feeling in my chest of nostalgia and sadness, this song is as haunting and beautiful as ever. 4.6
16. West - River Tiber - I'm a sucker for this sort of r&b, but I cannot say that I think those vocals are nice to listen to, and even moreso those backing vocals are laughable. But it was... it was... ehh, I liked the beat and atmosphere it attempted. 2
17. Video Hits - Too Young to Go Steady - This is fine, it's cute. I feel like I've heard too many songs that sound similar to this in my lifetime though for it to be memorable at all. 2.9
18. Schizophrenia - Sonic Youth - I've been sleeping on Sonic Youth for a very long time, only listening to one album (bad moon rising) and a handful of popular songs. This is super chill, I like it, but I'm afraid that it didn't really stick out too much. I seem to never take an immediate liking to 90's indie rock, it always takes--at times--years to grow an appreciation for them, like built to spill or pavement. 3.4 |

Know Your Product: Cool Rock and Roll vibe, it doesn't really grab me though. 3.3
Halah: Mazzy is so good, they've been growing on me like crazy lately. Perfect late night music. 4.2
Star Shopping: Nice flow actually! I don't hate this track at all, am I weird now? 3.3
Tristram: This is really cool, very diverse and weird. Love the instrumentation and it works well as a piece too. 3.7
Sliver: Still great. That raw feel and great flow. 3.8
The Killing Moon: Ah I hear what you mean. This indeed rules. Although I'll have to get used to those vox still. Super weird to see how Interpol and Editors and the like copied this. 3.8
Nutshell: I've always wanted to check them and this makes clear I should have done so ages ago. Great track. Thanks Ars! 4.0
West: This is kind of cool garas! Reminds me of many things I've seen at festivals lately. Nowhere near as bad as the others made me think it was. 3.3
Video Hits: This is great as usual budg. Twinkly melancholy goodness. 3.6

08.21.19 | Schizophrenia: Some parts are great here, but overall this isn't really my thing. It might be the vox again? Don't know. The instrumental parts are amazing so I guess it's the vox, they're a little underwhelming. The ending to this is awesome again. Conflicted, how fitting. 3.6
King Without A Crown: W e i r d. This is really weird. Reggae/ska/orthodox jew/rap. Huh. You can't deny this dude's gifted though, his flow is great. 3.3
Panda: I don't like trap, and this is full of it. Not for me, sorry! Dig some of the darker vibes though. 2.3
Hit It And Quit It: So... damn... funky... I remember checking this when I was a teen and not understanding it at all. Never came back to it, but I should have! 3.8
Heroes: That incredible build, won't ever get enough of it. A 5.0 of course.

"Panda" - Ugh... 1.0
"Hit It and Quit It" - Hey, it's not bad at all! Especially the organ sounds awesome! (Terrible album cover though...) 3.4

08.24.19 | Queens of the Stone Age - 2.9 - I had it rated a little higher, but the false endings annoyed me, so I penalized the track for them. |
Divaman
08.24.19 | OK, I can edit it now. Our mysterious benefactor has granted me permission, since I'm hosting for September. Can't open it back up, he'll be granting permission on a needs-only (or case-by-case) basis. But at least we know that all the work that has gone into this hasn't been lost. |

08.26.19 | Nope, both site and spreadsheet works just fine. But I still don't have the permission to edit the spreadsheet, haha! I guess, I'll add all the data to my downloaded one. |
garas
08.26.19 | "My Baby Just Cares for Me" - The video was lovely, nice song. 3.0
"Song for the Dead" - Not bad, but this band is seriously overrated. 2.9
"This Town Ain't Big Enough For The Both Of Us" - I just don't like it. Those vocals... 2.1
"Square Hammer" - Still 5.0. |
Divaman
08.26.19 | I'll add your scores to the spreadsheet. |
ArsMoriendi
08.27.19 | "Usage of Toddler Playground"
Jewish reggae rap? Why? This is boring.
2.5/5
Still can't access the doc, so add my score. |
ArsMoriendi
08.27.19 | "Panda"
Bad trap bullshit. Borderline torture honestly.
1.3/5
""Heroes""
The guitar is great and floaty, the piano is low, but catchy. This song is about a couple Bowie saw while in Berlin and him seeing them caused him to write a song about two lovers separated by the Berlin wall. My personal interpretation has it about a bad relationship between two people who shouldn't be together, but one of them wants to put aside their differences for once. It's intense with passionate vocals and a slow krautrock inspired repetition. A classic.
4.9/5
"My Baby Just Cares For Me"
Simple and jazzy. Her voice is so deep, and so pleasant.
3.6/5
"Song for the Dead"
Creepy organ, cool guitar line. I like those vocals, they're harsh, but cool.
3.8/5
"This Town Ain't Big Enough For The Both Of Us"
Glam rocky, theatrical, and all over the place. Not the best thing I've heard from Patton, but still fun enough.
3.5/5
"Square Hammer"
Whiny, boring, and kinda emotion outside of whining. Radio pop rock?
2.4/5 |
Divaman
08.27.19 | No problem, Ars. So that was a 5 on the Matisyahu, right? (Heh heh. jk.)
And as for myself:
Joe Higgs - 2.2 - The guy has a smooth voice, but that's the only thing I like aout the track.
|
Minushuman24
08.27.19 | Just finished up the stress of moving out/moving in, so back to this~
19. King without a Crown - Matisyahu - I don't think this is pandering. I also confused this with some japanese post-hardcore band that I can't remember the name of. This is.... it's fine? It's fine. 2.5
20. Panda - Desiigner - This sucks, souless as fuck 1.3
I went to check my spotify tab and there's still an entire minute left, ugh
21. Hit it and Quit it - Funkadelic - I kinda stole this album from my college's library a while back. I haven't listened to it in so long. Great song. 3.6
22. "Heroes" - David Bowie - For such a long time I always thought this to be one of Bowie's more overrated tracks, but in the past year or so it has wormed into my heart and now I cannot listen to it without it pulling lightly at my heartstrings. 5
23. My Baby Just Cares for Me - Nina Simone - This is so lovely, I adore her voice. 3.9
24. Song for the Dead - Queens of the Stone Age - The main riff in this has to be one of my all time favorites. Fuck that, this is just one of my favorite guitar songs I think, it's so memorable. 4.2
25. This Town Ain't Big Enough For The Both of Us - Sparks vs. Faith No More - 3.3
26. Square Hammer - Ghost - This sounds like if AFI went full on radio rock. I guess it's good I like AFI? 3.2
27. I'm the Song My Enemies Sing - Joe Higgs - His voice is actually one of the weaker aspects of this track for me, but I still quite enjoy his voice. 3.6

Divaman
08.28.19 | Hmm. Don't mean to make you feel bad, Slothcore. But it was sad that Minus gave "Panda" a 1.3, and its average went up slightly.
Hey, I don't mind adding these scores, but I'm curious. Am I the only one who was granted editing privileges on the spreadsheet? |
ArsMoriendi
08.28.19 | I can view the doc now! (but not edit it...) whoo! :) |
Divaman
08.28.19 | Did you get the link to request the right to edit it from the list owner? That's how I got back onto it -- a clicked that link, explained that it was diva and that I'd need editing privileges to edit the spreadsheet if I'm going to host in September, and then I got a second email granting me editing privileges. |
Divaman
08.28.19 | Church of the Cosmic Skull - 3.0 - not bad. |
Divaman
08.29.19 | Agent 5.1 - 3.7 - kind of moody and cool. |
Divaman
08.30.19 | Goldfrapp - 3.1 - It's got something, but it feels like some of the components making up the song don't really go together. |
Divaman
08.31.19 | I Break Horses - 3.9 - Kind of repetitive, but I like it. A strong ending to August. |
SlothcoreSam
08.31.19 | Hey the Panda Pander, was me being a dick.I'd only give it a 2.7.
Gonna finish the month tomorrow. |

garas
08.31.19 | Final catch-up:
"(Iām The Song) My Enemies Sing" - It was okay. 2.5
"Afro" - This would be awesome as a full instrumental song, but the vocals... 2.7
"Utopia" - That wasn't utopistic at all. 2.1
"Winter Beats" - It was surprisingly gooooood!! (Terrible band name tho.) I felt it was a bit short, so I might have to listen to the full album. And I liked the music video as well. 3.8 |
Lord(e)Po)))ts
08.31.19 | U just hate women |

ArsMoriendi
09.03.19 | I will catch up on this sometime soon |
Trifolium
09.03.19 | That is one hot bum Ars! |
ArsMoriendi
09.03.19 | "(Iām The Song) My Enemies Sing"
This is pleasant. Not much else.
3.2/5
"Evil in your Eyes"
Sounds like lame progressive pop like ELO's less good songs. Wait it's getting physics and slow hmmm. Way too long and nothing too special.
2.8/5
"Afro"
Very raspy voice. I like the Spanish guitar that comes in late into the song. The atmosphere is dark and pretty in general, which is appealing in trip-hop. I can't say that this is my favorite thing I've heard in the genre though.
3.7/5
"Utopia"
Such pretty strings in the opening. I feel like rating this is like cheating because I already have this album 5'd. Good pandering, though "Human" and "Deer Stop" probably would've gotten you a perfect score from me. This is close though. The synths, her sweet voice, the cinematic climax feel of the song all work so well.
4.8/5
|
ArsMoriendi
09.03.19 | "Winter Beats"
So far kinda bland and synthy. Yup, still bland.
2.9/5 |
Divaman
09.03.19 | Yikes! Ars, put some pants on! |
Minushuman24
09.03.19 | God dammit, Sputnik logged me out because I was distracted and I lost my ratings. Fuck it

29. Okay 2.9
30. very nice 3.7

09.06.19 | A Song For The Dead: Nice track of course. Those riffs, the vibes. 4.2
This Town Ain't Big Enough For The Both Of Us: Hmmm, I don't know. Oh wait, I do. 2.2
Square Hammer: They were never really my thing. Production here is especially annoying to me. 2.8
I'm The Song My Enemies Sing: Very cute. puts a smile on my face. Love the rhythm section. Lovely track. 3.5
Evil In Your Eye: I liked the quieter, more introspective parts, the louder parts became a little repetative. Still a nice tune overall! 3.2
Afro: Whoa, sexy music! Mighty fine rec, will check this album asap! Nice beat, great vox, percussion is amazing, love the rasp. And that Caribbean mix up is nice too. 4.5
Utopia: Best track on the album. Best track of their discog maybe even. 4.3
Winter Beats: A little monotonous, but the build up is fine and it's nicely dreamy. Plus the mix is great. 3.5
