The Boy (Pop pick)

This is from 2018? It sounds like 60s sunshine pop! Something about this makes me think of The Mamas and The Papas. This is retro, but it’s hardly unique honestly.

Chocolat's - African Choco
“Nostalgia disco medley” (R&B pick)

Ugh disco is kinda lame. I love funky stuff like Parliament, but this is like disco minus the funk so far and I’m not loving it. Okay it’s kinda funky now, but almost in a superficial way. I have a roommate up in college who LOVES disco and he plays bass and piano. I might show him this, but it’s not at all for me.

"Mama Loi, Papa Loi” (Folk pick)

Very psychedelic so far! Reminds me a bit of Dr. John. His vocals have a lot of energy and the guitar is nice.

3.6/5
5Fire Engines
Hungry Beat

“Meat Whiplash” (Rock pick)

Very post punk so far… almost jangle pop guitar style wise. Like a weirder R.E.M. A lot of soloing, but nothing too stand out.

“Witch of Endor” (Classical pick)

Love both the flutes and the violins here actually. Best song so far. The percussion is really rhythmic, which I don’t typically expect in orchestral stuff. Wait it just changed! Ooh is that cello? Nice. Wow, this is like a nerdy march through Middle Earth now. This is very varied in its structure and that’s doing a great job at keeping me engaged. It’s also pretty out there too, so I can appreciate its experimental nature. Also that part with the flutes makes me think of a Bugs Bunny cartoon, nice. Maracas? Unxpected again. Good twists and turns.

“Shook Ones” (Electronic pick)

Smart choice by playing it safe with trip hop. Her voice is sweet and the drums rule here. A bassy beat in hidden in there too. Nice orchestration, albeit mixed a little low. WAIT 2 seconds of record scratching? Gimme more than that. The vocals are oddly dream poppy, but I guess dream pop and trip hop cross from time to time, so it’s not that odd. I wish the instrumentation went somewhere more though, like it’s so stagnant compared to other trip hop I like. I may have to classify this as background music. It’s really good background music though.

“Ya A Ya A Ya A” (Jazz pick)

Avant garde and chanty. That’s fun! Plus the tone of the sax here works well with those drums. And there’s that freeform sax solo with tambourine accompaniment. This was cool, but it really doesn’t stick out much among the other free jazz stuff honestly.

Da Fat Cat Clique - Fat Cat Clique
“Watchitsucka” (Hip Hop pick)

Fun old school stuff. Cool guitar sample. The backup rappers are pretty okay. I don’t ever see myself listening to this again though. Kin of middle of the road 90s stuff, right? But it’s from 2000 actually haha.

10Billy Childish and The Blackhands
The Original Chatham Jack

“Bottom of the Sea” (Blues pick)

Modern, but it tries to sound old. It somehow gives it a heavy Jack White feeling since he also often takes influence from delta blues, but is modern. It’s a lot of less interesting though if I’m being honest. Also I know that’s not the album this is from, but the right one isn’t in the database.

“The Village” (Pop pick)

Very synth poppy so far. It’s a very simple poppy songs, but his voice is very convincingly emotion, so I like it for that reason.

3.5/5
13The Spinners
2nd Time Around

“It's a Shame” (R&B pick)

Soulful so far and wow he can hit some pretty high notes! Those trumpets work well too. Simple, not too unique, but I have a soft spot for late 60s/early 70s soul stuffs.

3.7/5
14Current 93
Thunder Perfect Mind

“A song for Douglas” (Folk pick)

Damn, those vocals are nerdy as hell. Is that The strings are pretty nice so far. Eh actually…

2.9/5
15Oxbow
Let Me Be A Woman

“Gal” (Rock pick)

Wow those vocals make me think of Gene Ween. Nero check GodWeenSatan: The Oneness honestly, you might like it. Great pick up. Those growls are super fun and I like the atmosphere a lot here. Crazy and noisy, just as rock should be!

“Akea” (Classical pick)

Ah musique concrete, such a chaotic genre. Yup that piano is discordant as hell and the violins and cellos are jagged sounding.Oh fuck, I just realized that this was 13 mins long 5 mins in haha. Well i must’ve gotten lost in it, so it’s clearly very entertaining so far. Man, for some people this could be the music they play in hell, but for me, I could see it being played in heaven… occasionally.

3.9/5
17DJ Scud
Ambush!

“Jungle Warrior” (Electronic pick)

Sounds like breaks. This is very obnoxious, but I’m not sure if it’s my brand of obnoxious. I’m not personally annoyed by it though. This is meh.

2.5/5
18The Angels of Light
How I Loved You

“My True Body” (Country pick)

This feels like a storytelling epic so far. The percussion is really cool and that guitar is pretty typical of country. It also has a bit of an indie feel to it. Indie Country? Not like Wilco though. Decent buildup, but I was expecting bigger.

3.4/5
19Sonny Sharrock
Ask the Ages

“Many Mansions” (Jazz pick)

Very bassy so far, and that trumpet theme reminds me a bit of Zappa’s jazz fusion themes. Damn that sax solo feels like free jazz again. Good song.

3.6/5
20Count Bass D
Dwight Spitz

“Make a Buck” (Hip Hop pick)
I like how glitchy that intro is and that guitar sample is really pretty and I mean in a way I actually really like.

4/5

“Message to the Clerk” (Blues pick)

Oh my god, this guy! Outsider music blues! This is goofy and I like the harmonica. The guitar is simple, but effective. Yup, this is pretty good.
