The Umbrella Genre Contest Round 4: Metal Patio Umbrella

2 more people are out and the rest are in.
1Brainiac
Bonsai Superstar

The rules are simple:

1.Link a song via YouTube, Spotify, Soundcloud, Bandcamp, DailyMotion, Vimeo... or whatever you like as long as I don't have to download something.

2. The genre this round is rock. Rock 'n' roll, metal, punk, indie rock... etc. Just make sure it has a guitar, percussion, and that a reasonable person would call it rock music.

3. Aim to impress me with what you pick, since I'm rating these.

4. If I know the song already, I'll tell you to pick something new, otherwise you're good.

5. I'm going to start each new round every Thursday night, so if you're late, you're out.

***The winner can recommend me whatever album they want and I'll listen to it no matter the album as long as it's not impossible to find.***

“Valsa Dos Cogumelos” (SandwichBubble)

Simple, instrumental, and pretty. There’s not much else to say here and I can’t say I’m impressed, but… this is nice? I guess there’s a bit of a psychedelic tinge to it to. It’s like background music honestly.

2.8/5 PASSED!
3Clara Engel
The Bethlehem Tapes

"Accompanied By Dreams" (JustJoe.)

Haunting vocals so far and is that a cello? You know, I played cello from 5th-12 grade. I have such fondness for it. The rest of it is pretty uninteresting honestly, but cello dammit! Wait, those ghostly backups are kinda neat too.

3.5/5 PASSED!
4Tim Buckley
Starsailor

“Song to the Siren” (Frippertronics)

His voice is kinda odd and not in a way that I like. The guitar is pretty bland and it seems like the focus is mainly on vocals/lyrics. Not really my thing at all.

2.5/5 PASSED!

“I Want to Be Alone” (Pheromone)

Another simple, lyrically focused song. I’m afraid a lot of people took the “singer/songwriter with just an acoustic guitar” approach to folk and that stuff rarely meshes with me. I’m kinda hoping there’ll be more traditional cultural music influences for the rest of these…

2.6/5+0.5=3.1/5 PASSED!
6Fleet Foxes
Crack-Up

Kept Woman (Masochist)

The harmonies make me think of Simon and Garfunkel and the piano is actually pretty engaging. There’s a level of intensity here that’s actually a little satisfying.

3.4/5 PASSED!
7Borknagar
Origin

“Earth Imagery” (TheSpirit)

Well this one feels epic off the bat. I don’t really care for the vocals, but they’re not awful. The flutes are nice touch. This feels kinda proggy in a way. Folk prog? Sput says they’re black metal, hmmm. Not on this song they aren’t at least haha. Decent.

3.2/5 PASSED!

Parallelograms

“Chimacum Rain” (bgillesp)

Pretty harmonies. Reminds me of Joan Baez or something. Her harmonies. Best “1 person and a guitar” pick yet honestly. A little trippy too? Oh damn she sounds ominous now. This feels culty hmmm. I feel like this would make a hangover 10x worse for some reason. It’s like the room is spinning.

3.9/5 PASSED!
9Mid-Air Thief
Crumbling

“These Chains” (ZombieToyDuck)

Okay, this guitar part is hands down awesome. The twinkling and the crackling! This is like a gorgeous dream! Those drums… that electronic fuzz… this is like a folkier Baths or something? I might actually check this album out if I remember this song, holy shit.

4.7/5 ROUND WINNER! (Handicap of +.05 next round)
10Joan Jett and the Blackhearts
Album

EnnĂŻs TĂłla - Seed
“Lucifer's Dance” (VuvuzelaBzz)

Folk prog with meh vocals. The flute’s cool and the bass is deep, so I like parts of it. This is super nerdy. Dungeons and Dragons music or something. The vocals sound so strained at the end...

3.3/5 PASSED!
11Gungor
Ghosts Upon the Earth

“Wake Up Sleeper” (tyman128)

This feels REALLY edgy for some reason, like someone took an Evanescence song and made it folky. The cool offbeat drums 2 mins in save it though… this is getting better. It’s like good music crashed into 13 yearoldcore vocals. Okay, the electronic beat does not work here at all what are they doing? This is trying too hard. I don’t like this.

2.2/5 FAILED!
12Reiko Kudo
Rice Field Silently Riping in the Night

“Mihoko” (AlexanderMR)

This is pretty. The male voice in the background is oddly unfitting, but whatever. The guitar that comes in is unique in a nice way. This feels like it’s at a campfire with people talking in the background. It feels natural.

3.6/5 PASSED!
13Hop Along
Bark Your Head Off, Dog

“How Simple” (Minushuman24)

This feels very indie rock. Probably the least folk yet, but it still qualifies. Her vocals are only okay, but the music is fairly pleasing. Nice outro violin.

3.2/5 PASSED!
14Uriah Heep
Salisbury

“Lady in Black” (Grimlin)

Catchy so far. Folk rock is pretty palettable for me usually. All of acoustic singer songwriter-ness of contemporary folk, but with more instruments and less vocal focus. Nice bass. Deep bass is always a plus.

3.5/5 PASSED!
15Jethro Tull
Songs from the Wood

“Ring Out Solstice Bells” (RikRoach7)

Oh my, isn’t this super poppy folk! The claps are so cheerful, this is so saccharine aaah. Genre: tooth rotting. Nice piano and drums in this middle section though. Still can’t say I care for this.

2.9/5 PASSED!
16Susan Christie
Paint a Lady

“Rainy Day” (Sinternet)

Pretty orchestral stirngs! They really make this gloom track feel that much prettier. I’m a sucker for poppy orchestral strings. Her voice is pretty too. The echo in her voice is sooo 60s (a good thing since the 60s is probably my favorite decade of music.)

4/5 PASSED!
17Haley Heynderickx
I Need to Start a Garden

"The Bug Collector" (neekafat)

Simple, with a pretty bland guitar. The trumpet gives it a little bit of an identity though. Mostly this is bland though. At the risk of a dick, maybe even a little uninspired? Like I said though: +.2 for the trumpet.

2.6/5 PASSED!
18Jackson Browne
Late for the Sky

“Fountain of Sorrow” (Thrust!)

This folk rock is very radio friendly sounding haha. I could see my mom loving this song. Those harmonies remind me of The Grateful Dead though, who I hate… This song is also like 7 minutes, which REALLY doesn’t work for a simple generic pop folk rock song. This is the 2nd time you recommended something that should’ve been half the length. Sorry man. Holy shit, is this song still happening?

2.3/5 FAILED!
19Smog
Red Apple Falls

“Ex-Con” (NeroCorleone80)

Cute synths and cheery drums. It’s sweet, but not too sweet. The self-deprecating lyrics help bringing it back down. This song feels oddly warm and toasty. I wanna drink some hot cocoa while this plays for some reason. HAHA he just said “I feel such a warmth.” That fits so well.

3.7/5 PASSED!
20Joan Jett and the Blackhearts
Album

Aberf, I tried putting this in twice, but I think Sputnikmusic, com hates your artist because it won’t let me include her on this list despite my efforts.

I don’t hate her however. In fact Ichiko Aoba’s song while led by simple acoustic guitar I didn’t love, also featured sweet vocals and section changes that I appreciated. She got like a 3.3/5 if I remember correctly.

PASSED!
