JoyfulPlatypus
12.09.20 | Donnie Darko! Loved that movie as a high schooler, but I adore every second of it as an adult. |
TheAntichrist
12.09.20 | best animated film: pinocchio
best live action film: shawshank redemption |
Ryus
12.09.20 | probably either woman in the dunes (teshigahara) or the master (PTA) |
Clumseee
12.09.20 | Ayyyyy Ryus I often say The Master too |
Ryus
12.09.20 | hell yea my man. incredible film |
Trebor.
12.09.20 | Blade Runner: Final Cut |
Narcho123
12.09.20 | Everyone's seen my favorite film (Blade Runner) but I quite like Jude, the film adaptation of Thomas Hardy's Jude the Obscure, though the novel is better. |
TheNotrap
12.09.20 | Probably Raiders of the Lost Ark |
Thalassic
12.09.20 | Toss up between Mulholland Drive and Lost Highway for me
Lost Highway tends to win on nostalgia points |
Rolling Girl
12.09.20 | This is a tough one. probably The Fall |
ReturnToRock
12.09.20 | Definitely a toss-up between City of God, Sleepers and The Godfather - Part 1.
Best animated is another toss-up, between The Lion King, Toy Story 1 and Coco. |
Uzumaki
12.09.20 | The Seven Samurai |
Ryus
12.09.20 | city of god slaps
i got seven samurai on criterion. good shiit |
Uzumaki
12.09.20 | The best shit |
solrage
12.09.20 | The End of Evangelion
If we're limiting it to live-action, close between Seven Samurai and 2001: A Space Odyssey. |
tectactoe
12.09.20 | Only given three films a perfect 100/100 score, as follows:
• HISTORY IS MADE AT NIGHT (Borzage, 1937)
• RAGING BULL (Scorsese, 1980)
• MODERN ROMANCE (Brooks, 1981)

12.09.20 | 2001: A Space Odyssey probably |
ReturnToRock
12.09.20 | @tec Raging Bull isn't even best Scorcese. |
Sinternet
12.09.20 | princess mononoke
live action is a more difficult pick but i'd say withnail & i even if I haven't seen it in a long while |
ArsMoriendi
12.09.20 | Animated: Anomalisa (this I'm sure of)
Live: The Big Lebowski (this I'm far less sure) |

Thranth
12.09.20 | LotR easily |
ReefaJones
12.09.20 | Probably The Devils by Ken Russell or Barry Lyndon |
Avagantamos
12.09.20 | comedy: office space
not comedy: twelve monkeys |
porcupinetheater
12.09.20 | Marketa Lazarova, prob. Czech New Wave’s like the best thing to ever happen |
Uzumaki
12.09.20 | Taxi Driver > Raging Bull |
solrage
12.09.20 | Marketa Lazarova was superb. Really underrated film. Also really loved Daises and Closely Watched Trains from the Czech New Wave.
Also: Raging Bull is a vastly superior film than Taxi Driver. Latter is one of Scorsese's ugliest films. |
tectactoe
12.09.20 | I like TAXI DRIVER a lot, undeniably classic for a variety of reasons, but I'd "only" rank it at third at best in Scorsese's filmography. Above it I'd put RAGING BULL (obviously) and THE KING OF COMEDY, which is sorely under-appreciated and/or overlooked. After that, it'd be a three-way battle royal between TAXI DRIVER, GOODFELLAS, and AFTER HOURS (another underrated pick) for bronze. |
porcupinetheater
12.09.20 | Hell yes! If you’ve never caught The Shop Around the Corner, the Cremator, Diamonds of the Night, or Valley of the Bees (that one’s the same director as Lazarova), they’re all all time masterpieces, too. Fucking insane how many genius filmmakers were all hitting such absurdly high notes right there right then |
rockarollacola
12.09.20 | It flips between Casino (1995) and Alien (1979) on a frequent basis. Currently its Casino. |
ReturnToRock
12.09.20 | Scorcese ranking:
1. Goodfellas
2. Taxi Driver
3. Raging Bull
4. The Wolf of Wall Street
then everything else. |
Ryus
12.09.20 | king of comedy kinda annoyed me. its a shame because there are a lot of things i liked about it. some of sandra bernhard's scenes...yeesh |
neekafat
12.09.20 | not sure, but Take Shelter is at least close |
Flashmobba
12.09.20 | no country for old men, any movie that speaks about nostalgia is up there for me, but this one's just perfect - amazing characters, amazing dialogue, amazing pacing, amazing plot, amazing ending, amazing themes/messages, just an amazing movie |
neekafat
12.09.20 | yeah that one's up there for me too flash |
robertsona
12.09.20 | historically SPIRITED AWAY
historically #2 is YI YI
but these days i'm feeling like GERTRUD (1964) or THE RIVER (1997) might overtake both |
insanedrexl1
12.09.20 | Oldboy. Other favs are The Raid movies, Amadeus, Eyes Wide Shut and Dark City |
robertsona
12.09.20 | Amadeus was a classic in my family growing up

aydross121
12.09.20 | Eraserhead |
robertsona
12.09.20 | two David Lynch joints in a row shit thats cosmic |
tectactoe
12.09.20 | to be fair, the scenes with sandra bernhard are supposed to be mega-cringe (as are many of the scenes with Rupert / De Niro himself). secondhand embarrassment is kind of a major point of the movie.
(not saying the fact that it's intentional should necessarily make it enjoyable, just pointing out that Scorsese, De Niro, Bernhard, Lewis etc. did a very good job of capturing that queasiness.) |
DominionMM1
12.09.20 | tough call. it’s between the godfather, the good the bad & the ugly, and apocalypse now |
naughtcturnal
12.09.20 | Hard to say but for now i'd have to go with La Haine. Beautiful, beautiful movie. |
deathofasalesman
12.09.20 | Memories of Murder, no doubt. Sublime camerawork, masterful storytelling, both deeply horrifying and darkly comic. |
PurpleDino
12.09.20 | spirited away probs |
combustion07
12.09.20 | For comedy Dirty Work is without a doubt the goat. Overall favorite would be between Taxi Driver and Jacob's Ladder though. Hard to choose |
combustion07
12.09.20 | Lost Highway is a damn good choice too. Love the party call scene. Eerie |
KManoc1
12.09.20 | Mission: Impossible - Fallout |
gryndstone
12.09.20 | This is one of those things that change for me a lot. Right now it's Climax - Gaspar Noe. Alternatively, Parasite |
el_newg
12.10.20 | The Shining for me |
alexp9000
12.10.20 | Probably Her |
evilford
12.10.20 | The dark knight probably
(Flame away) |
combustion07
12.10.20 | Hey yo Uzumaki! You ever seen the movie Uzumaki? It's wacky. Pretty sure it's based on some graphic novel or manga (I'm ignorant) |
ReiniEden
12.10.20 | That's a hard choice
My top are like Oldboy, The Last Samurai, The Lighthouse, American Psycho, Zatoichi (2003), A Taxi Driver (Korean Film). |
Sharenge
12.10.20 | there is no such creature
I could never pick a favorite film... even a short list wouldn't do |
Sharenge
12.10.20 | do see a lot of movies named already that could potentially make my top 100 or something....
Donnie Darko
Pinocchio
a number of David Lynch films (can't even pick a favorite Lynch)
a number of Miyazaki films (can't even pick a favorite Miyazaki)
Alien
Eyes Wide Shut
also really liked some others but not sure if they'd be top 100... Blade Runner, The Last Samurai, The Lighthouse, Lion King, Toy Story, Her, American Psycho, Raiders of the Lost Ark, Lord of the Rings (Fellowship might be top 100, but I don't know about the whole series), The Dark Knight, Godfather, Taxi Driver, No Country for Old Men |
Sharenge
12.10.20 | a few that would probably be in my top 50 or 100 that I don't see listed yet
Paris, Texas
Lost in Translation
Children of Men
Saving Private Ryan
The Thing |
MistaCrave
12.10.20 | As a diehard Gregghead, I gotta go with Casablanca |
combustion07
12.10.20 | Damn I need to check out The Lighthouse. Forgot it existed but remember it looking pretty promising |
ian b
12.10.20 | 28 Days Later easily for me. i'll let yall argue why or why not though. |
Sharenge
12.10.20 | haven't seen 28 Days Later in a long while, might be time for a rewatch
and yeah def check The Lighthouse it's a trip... director's previous movie The VVitch is worth a watch too... need to rewatch that myself - only seen a low quality cam/rip of it when it was brand new |
Emim
12.10.20 | All things considered, probably Mrs Doubtfire. |
ian b
12.10.20 | lighthouse is incredible, but on another note, 28 days later has aged like fine wine. plus, it's been an enjoyable pandemic watch |
bloodshy
12.10.20 | either The Arrival or Watchmen...
but the one movie i could watch more often than all others would be Groundhog Day. that shit never gets old |
Sharenge
12.10.20 | ah Watchmen is definitely up there - one of my favorite capeshits
didn't like the HBO series they recently did... dropped it before I was halfway through the 2nd episode because it seemed like it was totally on some SJW-woke shit... I mean for example if I remember correctly the villains were like white supremacists or something like that |

evilford
12.10.20 | Hey, Phil! Like the groundhog Phil? |
bloodshy
12.10.20 | :) it's funny that a movie about repeating the same day over and over would be my most-likely-to-repeat-play over and over
for some reason, the one line in the movie that always sticks out to me is "Needlenose Ned? Ned the Head? Come on buddy."
|
twlight
12.10.20 | Probably Children of Men |
twlight
12.10.20 | I also really like the Fellowship of the Ring |
OSEL
12.10.20 | have u seen the rather R rated japanese animation of frankenstein? from the 80s I think.
also ergo proxy good anime |
OSEL
12.10.20 | Kyōfu Densetsu Kaiki! Frankenstein |
chemicalmarriage
12.10.20 | Groundhog day |
Trifolium
12.10.20 | Once Upon A Time In The West.
The cinematography. The music. The plot. The script. The actors. Eye-candy from beginning to end, with a delicious rhythm. This is the one. |

Rawmeeth38
12.10.20 | The Departed |

rellik009
12.11.20 | Fight Club
or Boku No Piko (jk dont call the FBI pls) |
Shemson
12.11.20 | The movie that I saw at the cinema just at the right time and enjoyed more than any other film is Shaun of the Dead. Whole place was laughing start to finish and I’ve never enjoyed a movie so much ever.
Actual top picks for more artsy stuff tend to be covered by everyone else but I’d add Blue Velvet to the Lynch love in |
Sharenge
12.11.20 | lol my dad took me to see original Borat when I was a kid and that's probably the most laughs I've ever experienced in a theater
actually just watched Blue Velvet for the first time earlier this year - I think it will actually end up being one of my least favorite David Lynch movies, although Dennis Hopper's character was very entertaining haha |
MyFriendMetatron
12.11.20 | Eraserhead (maybe Blue Velvet)
Yojimbo
The Thing (Carpenter's of course)
Once Upon a Time in the West
Bladerunner
edit: Ooh Hausu and Gozu too. |
Shemson
12.11.20 | I think I prefer Mulholland Drive over Blue Velvet overall but I love Kyle MacLachlan in a Lynch production and nobody had mentioned Blue Velvet yet.
Also saw Borat in a theater too, great reactions there too, lots of laughs! |
Ryus
12.11.20 | yojimbo is fun af |
MyFriendMetatron
12.11.20 | "I'll send you a love letter. You know what that is? It's a bullet from a fuckin gun! If you get a love letter from me, you're fucked forever!"
|
robertsona
12.11.20 | I have some problems with the denouement/final section but Mulholland is deffo best Lynch, all his strengths are there. Even though maybe particular images from Lost and Blue are more appealing out of context |
cirq
12.11.20 | Eternal Sunshine and Jay n Silent Bob |
MyFriendMetatron
12.11.20 | @robertsona I think the appeal for me in Blue Velvet, is Lynch getting his stride after Dune(which I enjoy as a fan of the book and Lynch). It's a filmaker getting his shit together after a supposed failure.
Mulholland might be best Lynch, but Blue Velvet just resonates more with me because on a surface level I've had the misfortune of seeing situations like this as a kid. I can firmly put myself in Jeffrey's point of view, which kind of sucks but makes the movie more impactful. |
zakalwe
12.11.20 | Spaceballs |
MyFriendMetatron
12.11.20 | Bro Spaceballs rules. Young Frankensteen too. |
Bazman
12.11.20 | Best Lynch for me has to be Fire Walk With Me |
zakalwe
12.11.20 | Spaceballs is genuinely my most watched film of all time. It still makes me laugh. Classic. |
MyFriendMetatron
12.12.20 | Mel Brooks is a master. Too bad Gene Wilder/Richard Pryor are dead. I'd like to see one more movie with Mel directing, Richard( writing again as well) and Gene acting in a boring dystopian comedy. |
Masochist
12.12.20 | I'm a huge animated movie fan, especially those that are really good at showing instead of telling, and letting us actually "live" in the world they created. As such, my two favorites are Wall-E and the first How To Train Your Dragon. Spiderman: Into the Spiderverse will probably be up there in time too.
For live-action movies, Inglorious Basterds, Django Unchained, the first Avengers movie, and...Snatch. I fucking LOVE Snatch.
And for off-kilter movies, the one that really stuck with me way more than I ever thought it would was Suspiria (the original). Art-house thriller that predates The Shining, and I think when you watch it you can see the ways the former inspired the latter as far as movie-making goes. |
Emim
12.12.20 | I like how cirq just drops a comment like it hasn't been forever |
evilford
12.12.20 | Dogma |

naughtcturnal
12.12.20 | "Rewatched Come and See recently. I think that's gotta be it"

Sharenge
12.12.20 | Stalker is so zen |
FurtherDown
12.12.20 | Stalker or Sunshine. The latter happens to be one of the most underrated films. |
fatihcoskuny
12.12.20 | The Seventh Seal, Vertigo, Citizen Kane, Repulsion, Eight and a Half are some my other favorite films. As for underrated, it's a documentary but Gates of Heaven is so good. |
Sharenge
12.12.20 | I just watched Mank a few nights ago (about the guy who wrote Citizen Kane) so I'm probably gonna watch that very soon considering I've never seen it |
Flashmobba
12.12.20 | just watched Chinatown for the first time last night.... wow, can't believe I hadn't watched it sooner, so damn good |
