honestly don't even know how to describe how amazing this song is
Imagine 100 years ago, going on a train for days or weeks on end, just to chase after someone you loved. Things are rocky between the two of you. Do they still care about you? How would they react to seeing you? You don't know the answers, in fact, this entire journey may all be for naught. But nevertheless, you don't turn your back. You take that chance anyway. Why? Because it's worth it. It's worth it because you were once in love. And perhaps still are? |

This song has been hitting hard recently. It was written about Folds having an appreciation for Elliott Smith's music but never having a chance to tell him because of his untimely death. Both artists are legends and big inspirations to me. I feel like this song fits for any of our favorite artists that have passed from this earth. Although it could be taken as solemn on first look, I find myself having a warm feeling the more I listen to this track. I suppose you could call it bittersweet.

02.05.21 | I Love you Goodbye - So this was unexpected. Was thinking it would be more folk driven, but damn this is a good surprise. Very 80's like everyone is saying, also agree that the bass is a bit derivative of "Thriller." But damn, that piano just fills the gaps perfectly. Those irish-ish strings at the beginning are beautiful. There's some electronic work that reminds me of frickin' Donkey Kong Country, and trust me, that is a good comparison. Oh, and bowling references. 4.2/5
gotta dig more into Dolby !
|
Divaman
02.05.21 | Knew you'd love that bowling reference. :)
I've been racking my head, and I'm not even sure I can think of another song that has a bowling reference. I know a song (and an album) called "Kingpin", and the album art has a picture on the front cover of the lead singer holding a bowling ball while the picture on the back cover shows the band's faces on bowling pins getting bowled over, but the actual reference in the song is more like Spider-Man and Daredevil's enemy Kingpin -- the singer is accusing someone of being a no-it-all bigshot. At this moment, I can't think of another. |
nol
02.05.21 | I got 2!
The Wonder Years - Suburbia
"The Bowling Alley burnt down, they said it was a cigarette, almost believed it. There were burns in the carpet, but everyone knows that it was for the insurance."
Relient K - Deathbed
"I bowled about six times a week, a bottle of Beam kept the memories from me. My marriage had taken a 7/10 split, cus along with my pride the ex-wife took the kids..."
both great lines haha

Divaman
02.05.21 | Nice. I'm not familiar with either song. I did find one other online that I AM familiar with, though -- The Kinks, "Come Dancing":
They put a parking lot on a piece of land
When the supermarket used to stand
Before that they put up a bowling alley
On the site that used to be the local pally
There's also a bowling reference in "Summer Nights" from the Grease musical, but let's not talk about that. |
SlothcoreSam
02.05.21 | New NOFX song "Linewleum" references a bowing alley. And it's a great throw back to their original song Linoleum.
https://youtu.be/_Y3yDBklhDI
"Linoleum never meant anything to me
I never even wrote a chorus
Just verses and a bridge
It's like bulldozing a bowling alley for a used record store
Decomposing your best song is sacrilege
But when most hopeless bands play it wrong
And it's in Le Tigre's best song
And it was the last song that Tony ever played
It's time to put Linoleum out to stud and make sure that it gets laid" |

nol
02.07.21 | Isn’t she lovely is one of the lesser songs on Songs in The Key of Life imo, and it’s still an absolute banger. This is THE Stevie wonder harmonica song. Its just the melody doesn’t go anywhere. Except! the rare hook “I can’t believe what God had doneee” (thx sweet jesus). This phrase beautifully lets the melody loose, in the way Mr. Wonder does oh so well. (-0.5 for crying baby) 3.6/5 |

02.07.21 | I still need to go back and do the last two. I always listen to the tracks on time, but writing the thing is hard. Let’s me chew on it I guess. But I’m not sure that’s the point of SOTD lol. |
Divaman
02.07.21 | Hey, I gave Stevie a 3. But I checked back a few minutes ago. My whole music collection of everything I ever thought was worth saving is on 3 iPods, and without counting the duplicates, it's over 50,000 songs. And I don't have a single Stevie Wonder song. 02.07.21 | Abner Jaye - I'm not sure what the jokes in the beginning had to do with the song, and I'm kind of confused about your description, porcupine - you're saying the song itself was meant to be funny? I didn't get that, the song seemed like a straight up blues song to me. In any event, I'm not really a blues guy, although I have to admit, I kind of like this guy's voice. I don't know, I'm gonna go 2.8. |
Divaman
02.07.21 | As for who wrote the best blues song ever, I have to tell you modestly, it was me. Although I unfortunately don't have it posted online anywhere. |
Divaman
02.07.21 | I have to belatedly say, noler, I love that you quoted Stephin Merritt at the top of the list, even if you did think it belonged to Peter Gabriel. |
porcupinetheater
02.07.21 | So underground no one’s ever heard it? Now that’s a legendary blues mythos if ever I heard one! I didn’t know that you were THE Blind Willie Divaman
Also yeah, I guess the humor might be harder to see without the context of the rest of Abner’s discog, but I get the sense he kind of plays up the sadsack schlub, his stuff in general comes across to me like he’s looking at life with a cock-eyed bemusement and Mona Lisa smile |

02.07.21 | tbf, I did get that quote from 69 Love Songs, I just made an oops when I was researching the song, and thought it was a Peter Gabriel cover, not the other way around. I almost made “The Book of Love“ my rec this month, but felt it worked better as a descriptor. Boop’s powerful popness is more my type of music anyway. |
porcupinetheater
02.07.21 | Hurt-is-a-NIN-song Snydrome |
Divaman
02.07.21 | I'd have given "The Book of Love" a much higher score, though, especially if you'd have used the original Magnetic Fields version. (I find the Peter Gabriel version a little meandering. But then again I heard the original version years before I heard that one, so I was already prejudiced.) "Book of Love" is more my type of music than "Boop". |

02.08.21 | 3. I Love You Goodbye - 4.1 - This triggers my nostalgia somehow, though I'm pretty sure I've never heard this before. This is my kind of cheese, I really enjoyed the piano and strings. It's also pretty catchy.
4. Don't Worry About the Government - 2.7 - I'm not a fan. I know TH is really highly regarded on sput, but it didn't grab me at all srry.
5. You're Still the One - 3.0 - Very vanilla sounding to me. Didn't dislike it, but a little bland.
6. Isn't She Lovely - 3.9 - A classic. Heard it too much but it's a good song still.
7. I'm So Depressed - 3.4 - Huh.. I don't really know what to make of this. I guess I enjoyed the sadness and hopelessness of it.
8. Saint and Sinners Wine - 3.5 - I liked the structure of the song, I was hoping it would break out a little and it did, before ending like it began. Not the biggest fan of the vocals but it's a nice little song. |
porcupinetheater
02.08.21 | 5 - Andres - Hazy, floaty, lil sleep-funk on the bass groove (synth, I imagine?) Cool mood piece, although not super into the record static, think it takes a way from the sonic clarity this needs to really ace that smoky nightclub vibe 3.0 for now and I reserve the right to add a few points when I come back stoned off my bongos
6 - Stevie - Stevie. Boring choice cause the song rules and everybody knows it (or so I thought!) Shut up with the fucking samples tho I want ta hear the solo 4.2
8 - Stuck Out Here - Doesn't have the control of language to pull off the plainspoken honest poetry bent it's going for, and the vocals just bury everything else so they really needed to shine to pull this one off. Sorry Sloth!! My ass gets right picky with this sort o thing 2.0 |

02.10.21 | I'm So Depressed - The songwriting is real gud. And Abner's vox definitely epitomize those bluesy characteristics. Wish the the drummer (AKA Abner's Big Toe) was capable of something other than kick drum quarter notes tho.. Guitar also sounds a bit muddled, but thats more due to the recording I'd bet. Good shit. Made my butt bigger. 3.3/5
Saint and Sinner's Wine - I definitely see the criticisms for this, but I'm gonna play the other side and say this is very nostalgic sounding. I've put this sorta genre behind me recently, alt-indie-rock with intimate vocals. But this is a great track that brings me back! I love how it continues building, this is a track that could've easily relied on a basic verse/chorus structure, but instead made things more dynamically interesting. His vocals are also v charming, I wonder where his accent/tone originates. Great lyrics too, take me back to that Springsteen cover band ... 3.9/5 |

Repetitive opening, before, blessedly it changes. Oops, there's an Orc vocal. Fuck. Oh, now he's actually sort of singing. It's like an Orc gene-spliced with Dee Snider. I've heard worse, I guess. How long is this? A little under 5 minutes. I can cope with that. ... He's gonna barf up his stomach lining if he keeps this up. I'm thinking 2.7 |

02.11.21 | "Boop"
This is surprisingly soulful. I was expecting weebcore. The production makes this feel kind of plain, but the horns are nice. Pretty cool buildup.
3.5/5
"Adoro"
One of the more interesting songs Pots has picked by her, mostly because of the beat. That dude's voice is boring though. I hate saying this though, but those synths remind me of this level of Sonic Adventure 2 Battle I used to play. The level with Knuckles in Space. Meteor Herd! Potsy is recing some video game nostalgia accidentally while trying to push some Italian popstar down our throats.
3/5
"I Love You Goodbye"
Continuing the video game theme by choosing some video game loading screen music with some sexy vocals sprinkled on top. Man, now the vocals are just 90s cheese.
2.5/5
"Don't Worry About the Government"
Not my favorite Talking Heads song, but still certainly a fun one. The jittery guitar is neat or is that a keyboard? Byrne is always so confident in his nonsense.
3.8/5
"You're Still The One"
Off the bat, this has a fun messy energy. Another case of "this would feel more enjoyable in a club, so I'm gonna rate it as if I'm in a club dancing to it." Mid-tempo but funky electronic stuffs. A change in direction for an outro? Hmmm nice.
3.3/5
"Isn't She Lovely"
This is fucking cheating. You wish your dad was a famous soul artist who wrote a song about how much he loves you over some great bass and synths. And the harmonica solo is of course iconic as hell. It's a pretty creative idea for him to put his baby on the audio too. Everything about this song is right. Maybe -.1 because it does drag A BIT.

ArsMoriendi
02.11.21 | "I'm So Depressed"
I feel like I should like this more for some reason. It's a nice blues song, but it's missing something. A little boring I suppose?
2.9/5
"Saint and Sinners Wine"
Am I listening to The Fray or something? WHERE DID I GO WRONG I LOST A FRIEND! No seriously. Okay, it picked up into a slightly different style, but damn I don't like this at all. Oh wow, the vocals get really awful for a second. I think I hate this. It's so ugly, yet so generic.
2/5
"Code Blue"
Punk that's not pop punk. That's already off to a good start. Wait, it's about necrophilia...I swear this isn't the first song celebrating violating corpses chosen for a Song of the Day. At least the music is fun.
3.4/5
"Train Song"
Her voice is haunting and beautiful. Ooh, and there's a string section too! This is simple, but it works really well.
4/5

3. I Love You Goodbye: cheese fountain, hot damn. I was vibing it up until the deathkitsch strings at around 3:30 and onwards, but ig it had a decent run until then? fun song 3.0
4. Don't Worry About The Government: haven't jammed this album in years, but I remember the latter half (from around The Book I Read/this song) easily being the best bit. Hmm. This song is endearing and funny and I still like it (the "civil servants" stanza is still a Byrne classic), but it doesn't have anything approaching the groove of the best TH material. More like a novelty skit, idk, 3.7
5. You're Still The One: mmmhmm yes, am feeling this. I'm still recovering from my last nap, which feels like an unideal listening frame, but it's grooving and kiltering and off-kiltering just the way i like. love those chords, nice samples, nice crackles, i will go back to sleep now 3.6
6. Isn't She Lovely: yes. this is almost fantastic, agreed with Ars that it drags a smidge, fascinatingly hilarious that Diva of all people is stirring the pot here. cool. 3.8
7. I'm So Depressed: now THIS is prime post-nap disorientation fodder, I love it and it is piercing my soul rn in a sad and angry and deeply confused way. 4.9

02.14.21 | "Anal Perversions"
People who rec shit like this could at least have the courtesy of listening to and rating everyone else's songs. 5 minutes in and I gotta say: it's more boring than "bad." Like I'd much rather listen to this than 10 minutes of Opeth's bullshit. That's right fuck that one song from Blackwater Park I've heard and its fancy acoustic work leading into lame as can be RAWR growls. At least there are no guttural BS RAWR vocals on this. But yeah this isn't for me. Better than Opeth though. Okay, maybe I'm just trolling when I say that... this is worse than Opeth. Maybe... actually I'm legitimately not sure. At least this puts me in the mood for Coil. Opeth doesn't do that. Opeth puts me in the mood for turning off music for a half-hour. This song is so boring, I had to rant about another band to keep my attention.
1.5/5
"Penguin"
Why is this song looping some low random crackling. It's like she dropped her phone and was like "what if we looped that sound quietly." The other beep boops are kinda cool. I've heard an album of hers from Johnny before and yeah it's got those Bjork Vespertine vibes I suppose too. Yeah, this is pretty creative and cutesy. It doesn't have that "wow I need to check album this" soon vibe, but it is still deff good.

02.24.21 | uncleansably hexed ratings from pangea smdh |
Divaman
02.24.21 | Soccer Mommy - I wasn't blown away by this album, but I thought this was actually the best song on it. 3.3 |
dedex
02.25.21 | 25. Dark Flowers - it's pretty, but she's forcing her voice to go places it can't really go. 3.5 tho, it's mostly pretty |
Pangea
02.25.21 | 19. Different Stars - god this is beautiful. 4.5
21. New Birds - spoken word song with a build-up. Kind of reminds me of later era La Dispute. Is that a weird thing to say? maybe, but i'm saying it regardless. Anyway this is great. 3.8
22. Just Like Heaven - yeah this rules. 4.0
23. Late - This is pretty, lovely piano. But i agree with Diva that the voice is a bit meh. Copying his rating too. 3.2 |
Divaman
02.25.21 | Emily Kokal - Quiet, slow intro. A little bit of an unusual structure, which is kind of cool. I do see what dedex means about the vocal - she spends much of the song in her high range, which, I think, doesn't do her any favors. 3.4 |

Divaman
02.26.21 | OK, what was that formula again? Take dedex's score, subtract .3 to .5 ...
Peter Gabriel - Hmm, tough one. This has never been my favorite song on this album, or even my second favorite. (Those would be Red Rain and In Your Eyes). On the other hand, it does have Kate Bush. It's a bit precious, though. 3.7 |

02.26.21 | 24. Royal Screw Up - well this is bland. 2.5
25. Dark Flowers - I love her delicate voice, couples really well with the minimalistic instrumentals. Beautiful stuff. 4.2
26. Don't Give Up - Neat bassline, but not much else appealed to me. Oh god why is this over 6 minutes? It's getting so fucking boring. 2.5
27. Águas de Março (Waters of March) - This is cute and playful. lovely stuff. 3.5
28. Tie Me Down - I didn't care for his 2015 album when it got moderate hype on sput, but i can vibe with this. maybe should relisten. 3.7 |

02.27.21 | "Somo"
Those background sounds, sound wet. Very indieish vocals and the guitar is pretty. Wait, they got metally now, lame. This isn't bad, but it's very background musicy.
3/5
"Goodbye Lucille #1"
Frippertronics used to push these guys on me hard. Very 80s and English so far. This is kinda like a theme to some rom com and I'm not feeling it at all.
2.5/5
"Untoucable Pt. 1"
Modern prog cheese with an intricate guitar part. Not my thing at all. This sucks actually, sorry.
2.2/5
"Love's Enough"
Pretty piano. It's a simple-sounding tune, but I like it. A lot of emotion. It's relaxing, but it feels like a strong statement piece.
4/5
"Different Stars"
This is from 2002 but sounds like it's from the 2010s. It's not my thing at all though. In fact, I find it to be boring as hell.
2.5/5
"It's Okay to Cry"
This just sounds like bad radio pop. RIP to Sophie, but I don't like her music.
1.5/5
"New Birds"
Very lo-fi production and talked vocals? I like the music, especially the bass tone. These vocals feel so grumbly and unpleasant. I guess it's about not cheating on your current girlfriend with your ex-girlfriend even though you had the chance to. Definitely has a similar grumbliness as Slint's vocals on Spiderland, but I don't know, I like it less here. The music is certainly good though, so I still like it a bit.
3.6/5
"Just Like Heaven"
The only song by The Cure to ever really click with me was Love Cats, but this is still nice enough. The main guitar riff has a nice tone.
3.3/5
"Late"
This is really endearing and honest and the piano is interesting. I like this.
4/5
"Royal Screw Up"
Pretty voice and decent acoustic part so far. Good enough.
3.4/5
“Dark Flowers”
So much folk this month. This was nice enough. Didn't stand out much, but it was nice.
3.1/5
“Don’t Give Up”
Bass and poppy Peter Gabriel vocals. I've heard this before, but I don't remember it that well. Not really Kate Bush's most interesting work either. Her actual solo work is a billion times better. Honestly, this is way worse than anything else she did in the late 80s.

same thought crossed my mind, and it's definitely not because someone rec'd slint last month, not at all |

02.27.21 | Elis Regina and Tom Jobim - Starts out almost like a children's song. A little strummed guitar, some light piano, and a female and a male vocalist singing back and forth to each other. A little corny, sort of like a Spanish Steve and Edie. It has a certain charm to it, thought. I'm thinking 2.9. |
Divaman
02.27.21 | I haven't heard any objections, so it looks like I'm hosting March. |

02.27.21 | Late - “Elliott, man, you played a fine guitar,” he did 😢. Ben Folds doesn’t have the strongest voice in the world, and he kinda writes songs for church worship teams, but he’s got a down to the earth charm I’ve always appreciated. This gets 3.2! (and a big 💗 for the touching tribute to Elliott Smith)

02.27.21 | "Águas de Março (Waters of March)"
Pretty voices and good bass. I only knew Elis Regina's song "Cais" previously. A nice jazzy predecessor to the tropicalia I like for sure. Or after actually? This is from 72? Hah, what do I know. The piano, vocals, and bass rule. 70s Brazilian music is neat.
4.3/5
"Tie Me Down"
Barring electronic sound and some slightly whiny vocals. I don't know, it's not bad, but I wouldn't say it grabs me either.
3/5 |

02.27.21 | I'll put up the March list later tonight, so I don't accidentally break the "one list a day" rule. |

02.27.21 | Soccer Mommy - Based off the album art I thought this was gonna be some Uber-Pop-Dance-Fuck-core. I was wrong. Coffee House vocals, Maxwell House guitar, some interesting ambience near the end but that doesn’t salvage the song. 2.2
Dark Flower - similar vibe to soccer mom van, but this instead feels like a talented artist holding back on purpose to paint a subtle and haunting picture. Her voice is ethereal, makes you miss someone you haven’t lost yet. 3.7 |
nol
02.28.21 | Don't Give Up - hey... I'm pretty sure I've written this song before. So, not only is Peter Gabriel misattributing Stephin Merritt quotes, but he's also plagiarizing my music?? Let it be known, February 2021 is when Peter Gabriel fell out of my good graces. 2.3
Aguas De Marco - Masterful Pleasantries. Tropical Vibes and Bossa Nova are the key to happiness. Amazing range of piano tones, I like how the discordant piano is used to sound "submerged." And the vocalists are having so much fun! That's really all music needs, good vibrations! 4.8
Tie Me Down - Great use of deep synths to create a murky atmosphere. Agree with Ars tho, nothing about the melody especially really grabs my interest. Plus, it's my brother's rec, so I have to hate it. But I don't, it's a 3.2 |

02.28.21 | George Clanton - Wait, don't we mean "George Clinton"? I'm so confused. Oh well.
Slow-to-mid-tempo. A little bombastic? Average vocal. I don't know. Gets very echoey near the end. At least it's short. It's not getting it done for me, though. 2.2 |
