Great Songs On Disappointing Albums

Some people don't check out albums because of their low rating on this site. That's perfectly justifiable, but I thought I'd make a list of songs worth checking out, for any who love an artist but gave an album a miss because of the negativity surrounding it.
1Dark Tranquillity
We Are The Void

Iridium. This album was the biggest disappointment of my music listening career. I started listening to DT about 6 months before this came out, and they'd become my favorite band. Then this incredibly bland album came out, but with one redeeming feature; their best closer since Melancholy Burning. A slow-burner that could almost be labelled gothic rock, it's a huge change of pace for the band and their most successful experimentation.
2In Flames
Sounds Of A Playground Fading

A New Dawn. This was a pretty vicious one-two punch for me, as this was the next MDM band I got into after a friend showed me Colony, and was the second disappointment of a new release I got from the genre. However, yet again, there's a gem in the rough. 'A New Dawn', while cheesy in parts, is pretty much the epitome of the bands newer sound. Memorable riffs with a seriously catchy verse riff and chorus, making up their best song in over a decade.
3Justin Timberlake
The 20/20 Experience 2 of 2

Amnesia. Releasing 2 parts of an album seperately is an ambitious plan, especially when one half has an 80 minute runtime, and this is a perfect example of why it can be a bad idea. Neither of these 2 'parts' of the 20/20 Experience sound similar, with this second half sounding notably weaker in both vocal delivery and musical variation. Despite this, 'Amnesia sounds' like it would be right in place in part 1. A string intro mirroring Pusher Love Girl, an infectious main groove and easily the most memorable chorus in the album, this song is definitely worth checking out for anyone who enjoyed part 1 but let the anti-hype train get to them.
4Light Bearer
Silver Tongue

Beautiful Is This Burden. Fall of Efrafa were my favorite post-metal group, and Lapsus, while not on the same level as FoE's works, didn't disappoint me the way I worried it would. The opener on this album is fantastic too, beginning with a lengthy 5min string section, and exploding straight into an intense off-beat main riff. This loud/soft dynamic is adhered to somewhat predictably for the remainder of the song but it is executed so well that it's easy to ignore. However, the rest of the album doesn't live up to this opening, with bland melodies and mostly weak riffing.
5Pendulum
In Silico

The Tempest. A 7:27 surprise of a song. Bookending an album filled with unsuccessful attempts at expanding their sound, I had decided that the band did their best work when they sit in their comfortable dnb groove utilised for the duration of Hold Your Colour. But then this one song happened. It's far more upbeat rock than electronic, and has surprisingly vicious lyrics for such a poppy band ("I know that I can help you, I just don't fucking want to").
6Swallow The Sun
New Moon

Lights on the Lake (Horror pt. III). While I certainly don't think this album is bad, it simply doesn't live up to the bands previous 3 releases. This song, on the other hand, eclipses the previous 2 installments in the horror tracks from past albums ('Swallow' from The Morning Never came and 'Don't Fall Asleep' from Hope), and while Mikko's growls are notably weaker than in past releases, his experimentation and the inclusion of haunting female vocals lift the song to a level rarely reached by the band elsewhere in their discography.
7Immortal Technique
Revolutionary Volume 1

Dance With The Devil. This album doesn't hold a candle to volume 2, but I'll be damned if 'Dance With The Devil' isn't the most affecting hip-hop song I've ever listened to. This is his most well-known song, with good reason, and I highly recommend it.
8Max Richter
Infra

Infra 5. Another album that isn't necessarily bad, but is overshadowed by another album in his discography. The album simply doesn't flow like his other works, and this disjointed nature really hurts it's replay value, however 'Infra 5' stands next to 'On the Nature of Daylight' as his most beautiful piece. In contrast to his normal minimalistic compositions, this track slowly layers violins and cellos and builds until it reaches its climax, with a flighty violin line skimming the surface of the song while static builds up around it.
9Ozric Tentacles
Swirly Termination

Steep. This intro is absolutely perfect for an Ozric Tentacles album. With a concise 3min runtime, where the first half is simple keyboard and bass chilling out before that perfect guitar tone comes roaring through and takes it to that other world that only Ozric Tentacles occupies. For the remainder of the album however, the band rests on their laurels far too much, and when they finally do get the ball rolling, it devolves into instrumental wankery that doesn't contribute to the album at all. Luckily the lethargy wore off for their next album. While I would recommend the first song to a fan of the band, those looking to get into the band should look towards albums like Arborescence and Curious Corn instead.
10Daylight Dies
Idle

Unending Waves. A really great song on the bands weakest release. Even though the song was re-recorded on their debut lp No Reply, it lost some of it's rawness and emotion in the transition, and the tone simply doesn't fit as well into the album. The song in it's original format starts this album off on it's highest note, before the interludes kill it's momentum and it's followed by 2 significantly weaker songs. It can't stand side-by-side with behemoths like 'Lies That Bind' and 'A Dream Resigned' in either production value or emotive impact, but it is a great song in its own right.
