a well slept 2022 list

you know i don't do ratings anymore. It's been a while now like this and i feel like i've listened to so much more music than i would've otherwise. I just kept a simple rule: If i forget about it, then i just forget about it. If i remember it, then it must be because there' something there that caught me somehow, so i go back to it. Numbers can stand in place of complex feelings one might get from art, so i rather let those feelings lead the way. List is unranked. every album on it somehow managed to stick with me, for some reason.
1Organ Tapes
Chang Zhe Na Wu Ren Wen Jin De Ge Yao

OT can really pull out these hazy dreamy night street atmospheric tracks out from his ass like rabbits from a top-hat. The post-party melancholia hits hard, but there's some moments of bliss that stand out particularly. Less immediate than "hunger..." but still intimate.
2Jenny Hval
Classic Objects

Jenny's voice really goes a long way for me. I like her narration and voice overs, but her singing is the best. The timbre of her voice, the way she uses it to convey emotion and be narratively driven at the same time. She could totally pull off a musical, i believe it.
3Thaiboy Digital
Back 2 Life

new thaiboy shows persistently how much thaiboy has grown as an artist in the realm of LP making. Well paced, bangers give way to more reflective and slower tracks, that bring it back to bangers that finish off with eyes set in a new horizon.
4Ezra Collective
Where I'm Meant to Be

the London scene has been for some years now the new place to be for young musicians that don't really care for the "tag" freaks. Jazz/reggae/soul/hip hop/afrobeat/cumbia?. sing your song, that's the only rule in the kingdom. Try to keep the beat, tho.
5MJ Lenderman
Boat Songs

You know what's good? new music that reminds me of older music i already like!
6Billy Woods
Aethiopes

this and CHURCH have both been amazing. I can't say enough praises for Billy's flow nor the production choices. Just masterful and probably his best work to date, including collabs and Armand Hammer stuff too.
7Angel Olsen
Big Time

A work of confidence in one's own craft. Proud of her for this.
8Alex G
God Save The Animals

Another moment where consistency has at least come to par with excellency. Alex's most consistent and enjoyable album from back to back. The production is also the best his had in forever. Just a huge improvement overall in all aspects. Miss some of the highs from HoS, but c'mon...
9The Orielles
Tableau

I said this list isn't ranked but guess i lied LOL. This is AOTY, suckers!
10Surface to Air Missive
Shadows Leap

11Kikagaku Moyo
Kumoyo Island

The last dace for Japanese psych-jam freakazoids. Will miss deeply. Not their best, but still ace, and worthy of celebration.
12Asian Glow and Weatherday
Weatherglow

i don't listen to this kind of stuff almost ever, so i don't know what to say except this kinda went hard as fuck? really good!
13Vieux Farka Toure and Khruangbin
Ali

New Khruangbin comes with very interesting feature that adds a bit of energy and dynamics to their (lets be honest here) somewhat rusty formula. Still ace when it comes to vibin' driving music.
14Mamaleek
Diner Coffee

This band reminds me a bit of Daughters (which i don't like too much), but it also reminds me of Tom Waits and Naked City (which i do like). Overall? bangin' and a good Johnny rec, very grateful.
