PJ HARVEY RANKED

One of, if not the most, important female singer songwriter of her time, PJ Harvey has a long and prestigious career, with a lot of good music under her belt. She's also coming out with new music in a few months! I only ever listened to Let England Shake when it came out, but recently felt compelled to go into her discog and listen to it, which i did over the past 2 months or so. Here's some loose thoughts on all of her official solo albums, don't take it too seriously!
9PJ Harvey
Rid of Me

"Skeletal" is a good description for most of Harvey's music. Her songs have mostly simple structures and follow regular patterns, giving more emphasis to emotion and narrative. This simplicity plays against itself here, tho, with Albini's annoyingly abrassive production making it a real chore to finish.
VEREDICT: Irritating.
8PJ Harvey
Dry

In some ways, this doesn't feel like adebut album. There's so much confidence and a clear vision already present here. But it's also inconsistent and loses potency compared to most of here more mature work. Youth's vigor pushes through, a learning experience.
VEREDICT: Promising.
7PJ Harvey
The Hope Six Demolition Project

PJ's latest is competent. A bit of energy feels missing, like she's repeating herself a bit, but overall it's a solid entry in her catalog.
VEREDICT: Needs a holiday.
6PJ Harvey
Uh Huh Her

I've noticed this is considered her worst, and it IS a bit inconsistent, but damn there's a bunch of amazing songs here, that play so much to her strengths while also remaining distinctly rooted in the distance this albums puts between itself and the rest of Harvey's discog.
VEREDICT: Underrated!
5PJ Harvey
Stories From The City, Stories From The Sea

Most likely to be her quintessential album. Can't really remember much of it, but i sure like it when its on!
VEREDICT: Serviceable.
4PJ Harvey
To Bring You My Love

Now we're getting somewhere. While i embrace the inconsistency of some of her earlier work, i truly appreciate when artists start to understand what's so special about their own voice, work on their style and put it in a concise, condensed and straight-forward manner. Solid solid SOLID album.
VEREDICT: SOLID!
3PJ Harvey
Is This Desire?

At the risk of IMMEDIATELY contradicting myself, ITD? might most likely contain my least fav PJ song AND my fave PJ song of all time. A constrast that only serves to solidify my amazement at this album. The strong Trip Hop vibes help, too.
VEREDICT: Fascinating.
2PJ Harvey
White Chalk

After Uh Huh Her, this left turn into a folkier, more baroque sound might have caught some by surprise, but to me felt as natural as anything. She's clearly rooted in the folk artist pathos, and her voice finds a new, more subtle tone here that i geniunely miss. Definitely want more of this side of her!
VEREDICT: Necessary.
1PJ Harvey
Let England Shake

Classic. If you never listened to PJ, at least check this one out!
VEREDICT: Vital.
