06.14.22 | Rating music is fine
but you don’t have to do it
Why not just 5 what you like and 1 what you don’t (oh wait the troll rating rules..) hmmm |
JohnnyoftheWell
06.14.22 | yeah literally the main point of rating stuff is to have a long list of everything that is a short list of not everything that you forget about and lose |
Demon of the Fall
06.14.22 | I don't like music, but will continue assigning numbers to it as a way of validating my existence on this miserable planet

oh, for sure...
on the other hand, numbers confuse me, they make me feel angry and insecure |

06.14.22 | Hmm... I vaguely get your point, but GOAT-ing is just a synonym of "5.0". |

06.14.22 | I embrace my own objective subjectivity. Greatness transcends the binary nature of a number scale of value |

06.15.22 | I don't rate albums because I've just never felt the need to. If someone really wants to know what I like and what I don't, they can just ask me. I think I just don't want to spend too much time getting wrapped up in what makes a 5 and what makes a 1. Why should that matter? If I like something, I like something, if I don't, I don't -- plenty of music out there under both categories, and who cares what number is attached to it? |
JohnnyoftheWell
06.15.22 | if anyone wants to know what you like and what you don't, they can just open any given [famous band ranked] list on sputnikmusic.com and skim the fattest comments x |

06.15.22 | I don’t find rating music cringe as long as you’re using it just for cataloging you’re likes and dislikes. however, I have come to the conclusion that reviewing music is essentially pointless, especially when the internet allows us to listen to anything at anytime we want.
why would I review something when I can just go tell someone to listen to it because it’s good? |
JohnnyoftheWell
06.15.22 | hmm bc reviews are ultimately more valuable for discussion than discovery? |

Pretty much how I use the 4 rating. 2 is something I actively dislike. |
Hyperion1001
06.15.22 | are they really though? words can never actually describe how music sounds, it’s like trying to explain what the color blue looks like; it’s always a symbol and never the actual thing. plus it’s so heavily subjective that how one perceives something might be the polar opposite of how someone else sees it.
reviewing art had a it’s place before the internet because you needed an apparatus to discover new things. the landscape has changed so much that I don’t really see the need for that anymore. like why would I care what someone else thinks when I can just listen to it and decide for myself? just say it’s good and you like it. |
Hyperion1001
06.15.22 | but this is also just another subjective opinion, if you find value in it who cares what I think? |
rabidfish
06.15.22 | i think reviews are important if they are truly critic, in the sense that they create some sort of narrative to engage with the given piece, however it wants to (ideologicaly, phenomenologicaly, philosophicaly, sociologicaly etc). Reviews that are just "i liked this and that, i didn't like this and that" are just hot air |
Hyperion1001
06.15.22 | I will admit that I do like reviews that provide historical context, but I agree with the hot air thing. if a review amounts to nothing more than “this part of the album is good, this part is bad” then I really see no point anymore. |

06.15.22 | "it’s like trying to explain what the color blue looks like"
don't tell me that ain't the springboard for a decent conversation with the right person in the right context lol. i often appreciate reviews for albums i didn't plan on checking when the writer is far more invested in the music than i am - i think it can be q inspiring to see someone else unpack their thoughts that way, and it doesn't really matter whether or not we end up sharing the same opinions - in the same way that i don't expect revs to be anything but subjective, i don't feel that has to mitigate their value. it'd be a real drag if you went into everything you read expecting to come out in alignment with the writer's opinion
i also don't think the point of a rev should be to map out 'how music sounds'. i get more out of both reading and writing when it's more about what it *does* and how the reviewer got to that impression, or what wider framework it sits in, esp where the music/artist is a symbol for something else to begin with (p much the basis for all good pop revs) |
TheSpirit
06.15.22 | I think a lot of people enjoying reading reviews because they also enjoy the writing. I don’t think it’s just about the music. |
Hyperion1001
06.15.22 | i appreciate your point of view even thought I might not agree with it. thanks for discussing friends : ) |
Demon of the Fall
06.15.22 | reviews are nice when they provide additional context that you may not have been aware of, also sometimes the writing can indeed be enjoyable by itself without necessarily being 'needed' to push you in any sort of direction - I do read reviews for albums I already know well for this reason
Describing music can be tricky, but a review may succeed where more vague descriptors fail. You can't listen to everything and knowing what genre something resides in isn't necessarily a comprehensive enough argument for checking it out. |
