NOT an AOTY 2018 list

Not gonna make a top 10-20-50-100, u wanna know what were my fav albums this year just check my ratings. Here i'm gonna give a shoutout to some really cool stuff that came out this year that, even if it didn't blow me away, it surprised me or peaked my interest in some way or another. will expand.
1Various Artists (Pop)
Muggy vol. 1

A Dean Blunt release under the V/A alias because... uh... because Dean Blunt. A hazy, intimate, vulnerable release with some cozy performances, unique atmosphere and some of the most solid songwriting The UK artist has come up with in a while. If you follow the man's career this is a must, don't miss out: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=m-wfup2wPXo
2Jenny Hval
The Long Sleep

Not a big fan of Jenny's, her work has always been elussive and very, VERY, hit or miss for me. This new EP, tho, has got to be her very best material so far. Spells has to be my #1 SOTY and the t/t is also amazing. Again, if you have ANY interest in this artist's career there's NO WAY you should miss out on this EP.
3Mechatok
All My Time

At first it might seem repetitive, too simple or downright boring, but underlying here is a peace that's rarely present in music. It's not "meditative" music, like some ambient or new age, nor is it zen or shit like that. It's more like a warm comedown, a less angelic/virginal kind of disconection from the world, more like the furtive seconds after lovemaking, or the feeling in your head right after you come out of a noisy disco into the silent night outside.
4Santigold
I Don't Want: The Gold Fire Sessions

santigold's digital dancehall mixtape is such a good time... Though the reception has been pretty warm for this project overall, i don't see it getting the recognition nor the playtime it really deserves. There's material here for so many 'SUMMERTIME JAMS' playlists it's not even fair. Solid af.
5Lavina Yelb
Otra Vez Otra

This one IS on my top whatever of the year, but hey, it got only 1 rating so i might as well give it some press: Lavina Yelb is the music project by chilean artist Anibal Vley, his most interesting aspect so far has been his amazing videos, which are psychedelic, weird and fun as hell, rather than the music itself. Now, though, he seems way more comfortable and his growth as both a producer and composer shows. Its like an alien child trying to play funky music with toys while never having listened to a funk song in his life. Similar spirit to my beloved Foodman. "Playful" tag suits them both.
6Foodman
Aru Otoko No Densetsu

also, duh, check new Foodman, the definition of quirky music.
If they ever make a Rugrats reboot, i want him as the OST composer.
7DRAM
That's A Girls Name

in a year that, personally, felt pretty weak for hip hop and RnB releases overall, with a bunch of underwhelming releases where nothing seemed to fully click for me, it makes sense that a short 3-track release is the most consistent fun i've had with the genre in a while. Also like BB DRAM's vibe, not that raunchy, nor a depressed bitch. Chill out dude, chill out music.
8dinamarca
Emotional Dance Music

2018 has been the break-through year for alternative dance music that's been developing these past years, under the influence of the PC music collective, somewhat lazily grouped under the 'deconstructed club' tag. SOPHIE getting a fucking EMMY nomination is irrefultable proof. Despite this, there's still lots and lots of artists that need to be celebrated for their innovative work, a fresh take on reggaeton/moombaton/dembow/dancehall and other latinamerican and caribbean club staples with a taste for urban decay and a huge emphasis on body celebration and self-love that keeps moving further and further out from the PC Music shadow.
