08.21.20 | I'm also accepting recs ;) |
Yep321
08.21.20 | Mikal Cronin - MCII
List needs some Teenage Fanclub |
Sinternet
08.21.20 | Rather tenuous calling half of these power pop |
protokute
08.21.20 | Damn, Teenage Fanclub is missing indeed.
@Sin
Power Pop as a genre is very inclusive and far-reaching, in my view, and more descriptive than calling something Indie/Alternative Rock. |
WatchItExplode
08.21.20 | This is not the list I was expecting. Props for including Superdrag though. |
protokute
08.21.20 | what were you expecting? |
ArsMoriendi
08.21.20 | Real question: what defines power pop? Is it just upbeat pop rock? |
Minushuman24
08.21.20 | pop rock but with more geeturs |
protokute
08.21.20 | For me, it's basically rock music heavily influenced by 60's artists like the Byrds, Beatles, Kinks, and the Beach Boys, with big melodic hooks, nice and well constructed vocal harmonies, jangling or punchy guitars and a more energetic delivery. It's the pop sensibility for making awesome melodies and vocal harmonies like those from the 60's but with more.... power? |
ArsMoriendi
08.21.20 | So are of Montreal power pop? |
GhandhiLion
08.21.20 | A lot of these are not power pop. |
GhandhiLion
08.21.20 | A lot of these are just jangle pop. |
protokute
08.21.20 | hummmm It's been a very long time I've heard of Montreal, and the only album I heard was The Gay Parade, and although it has an excellent pop sensibility, I think it lacks some of the rawness and crunchiness from Power Pop. |
protokute
08.21.20 | Yes, some of these are heavy on the jangle side of things, but I put it here because I think it also has some very catchy hooks and more powerful deliveries. |
alamo
08.21.20 | more like power poop am i rieot |
protokute
08.21.20 | humor |
ArsMoriendi
08.21.20 | @proto: Yeah, I was thinking more Satanic Panic in the Attic when I said of Montreal |
protokute
08.21.20 | gonna try listening to that one, ars |
ReturnToRock
08.21.20 | The Blocked - Smashed Hits. Great random find for me.
|
Snake.
08.21.20 | cool, no weezer! |
protokute
08.21.20 | Not a fan of Weezer :/ |
WeepingBanana
08.22.20 | Excellent list, should be featured. Everyone saying these aren't power pop is a fucking idiot lol. And weezer sucks |
Snake.
08.22.20 | that comment wasn't meant to be facetious btw weezer is bad |
GhandhiLion
08.22.20 | The Feelies, Juliana Hatfield, Julian Cope, The Dream Syndicate, Rain Parade, XTC, Camper Van Beethoven, Jason & The Scorchers, The Pretenders and R.E.M are not power pop at all. |
WeepingBanana
08.22.20 | Maybe not the first feelies record but the rest absolutely are |
WeepingBanana
08.22.20 | But it's stupid to gripe anyways cause they very clearly fit in w the rest of this list which is like 80% indisputable power pop |
Jots
08.22.20 | guess I’d recommend The Necessaries (Arthur Russell was in this band lol), maybe some of the Modern Lovers as well as Jonathan Richman’s solo stuff |
WeepingBanana
08.22.20 | The Lemonheads too tho I guess they don't exactly mesh w the rest of this list |
WeepingBanana
08.22.20 | Oh wait I didn't see 66 |
protokute
08.22.20 | @ghandi I think they are tbh, the only album I admit I stretched the concept of Power Pop was with Felt, and I'm gonna change it for something else. For XTC, as I said on the list description, Skylarking isn't Power Pop per se, but some songs on it, are very close to Power Pop perfection and are very representative of the genre (Earn Enough For Us for example)
@banana
thanks for the support man ;) |

08.22.20 | Does The Jesus and Mary Chain circa Honey's Dead count as power-pop?
Also:
Toaster - Craska Vegas EP
Idlewild - Hope is Important / 100 Broken Windows
Green Day - Warning
Buzzcocks - Singles Going Steady
The Undertones
The Go Betweens
Babybird
Presidents of the USA |
protokute
08.22.20 | Thanks for the recs, man! The Go Betweens are really good
I think Jesus and Mary Chain even at their sunniest phase is still very melancholic and a bit gloomy for it to be considered Power Pop. |
Sinternet
08.22.20 | anyway didn't want to seem critical because all of the bands i've heard here go hard regardless of if they're actually power pop

08.22.23 | I love Alison Road sooooo much! One of the most addictive tunes |
pizzamachine
08.22.23 | What is power pop, ughghgh I’m so uncultured |
protokute
08.22.23 | It's basically rock with very strong and sometimes bombastic melodic hooks, with lots of vocal harmonies and muscular or jangling guitars inspired by 60s groups such as the Byrds, the Beatles, Beach Boys, the Who, Kinks... |
pizzamachine
08.22.23 | Oh snap okay I’m down |

Badfinger - Day After Day
The dB's - Black and White

protokute
09.14.23 | I'd like to recommend for anyone that digs 60's inspired stuff and Power Pop to listen to this obscure song from the Nashville Ramblers (if you haven't already):
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yBRaw9CNUZE
those melodies and harmonies just hit all the possible spots for me. Really an amazing tune, and very likely to be on maybe my top 10 favorite songs ever, it's that good (for me) |
