05.08.17 | I just never got this whole Ambient and Drone thing. It doesn't have anything remotely interesting to me. It always sounds either like a filler background sound in movies to create a certain atmosphere, you know the thing that isn't really music, but is necessary, because with simple silence it just does nothing to the viewer; or like a noise you hear when you have a concussion; or something to put on to go to sleep; or something you hear in a spa or something. |

05.08.17 | When I actually sit down with headphones to listen to stuff I usually just do it all in one go and use it as background ambience. It's just a lot easier to stay interested in the drone if you're not fully delving into it, since that can get boring if you're not doing anything else.

05.08.17 | speaking as someone who doesn't smoke weed but loves drone, find a good pair of headphones and something engaging to read while you listen
it also helps to try out a variety of artists, because different musicians have different approaches to the genre. my personal favorite is nadja |

05.08.17 | for me drone/ambient/etc work best when listened to when i do something else at the same time (reading, calculations etc) OR i'm super-focused on every little sound, not allowing myself to think about anything else (although i can't keep that mode going for too long)
So either give it maximum attention, or almost no attention, it doesn't really work in-between these |
Demon of the Fall
05.08.17 | I'd say I'm almost always paying around 50-75% attention which by your calculations makes drone impenetrable. I struggle to enjoy music if I'm not trying to hear some of the details & it needs to be my primary focus but not 'over-listening'... concentrating too much can make it feel like a chore. |

05.08.17 | yeah, when i listen to ambient or drone music, i really try to immerse myself fully on the music, i wanna feel those chords and synths passing and reverberating through my whole body.
Ambient music like the kind of Brian Eno I see is very enjoyable to listen to while on a car travel or when on a long bus ride through the country. Now that I think of it, Drone music might be nice coupled with a game called Dear Esther, don't know if you guys know it, but wanna try this later.

07.26.17 | Lay there and don't really listen to it, just let your thoughts kind of run their course. The music sort of serves as a guide or framework for where your thoughts will go. |

07.26.17 | i'm gonna go a bit against the consensus here and suggest listening to it more often, whenever you can.. sure, stars of the lid and boris aren't exactly portable but there are lot of drone albums that are. when you listen to it more you'll be more used to the aesthetic and the longer songs won't feel like 'waiting' so much, you'll get to the point where instead you'll be like.. 'oh, it's over?' also (and this could be directed to a few others itt), don't think of it as 'music' so much as just sound to soak in.. it is music of course, but when you're trying to absorb and enjoy it i think it's best to throw those kinds of distinctions out the window |
SCREAM!
07.26.17 | For me it's usually either as background noise while I'm doing something that requires my concentration (reading or at work) or I just put some on and lay down and sort of drift off (works best when you're tired and looking to really relax) |

07.26.17 | The only way you'll find success is consciously initiating the combustion process on some high THC cannabis.
As for getting into drone, it's better to let your mind wander than to focus too much on the music. |

07.26.17 | droning out again then, thc ready and mind ready |
