| Metalcore Genre Summarised in Just Five Albums
In this list, I'm going to try to summarise the entire metalcore genre, using only 5 albums. Let me know how you would do this in the comments, if you would do it any differently. I would also like to challenge people to attempt this with any other genre you like and post a new list. | 1 | | Botch We Are the Romans
Metallic Hardcore/ Old School/ 1st Wave/ Best/ 'True'/ Metalcore/ Mathcore:
This album serves to represent 'true' metallic hardcore, metal and hardcore mixed together brilliantly to produce a fantastic piece of music. This album also serves to represent the pinnacle of the genre, and the pioneering or 'old school' metalcore bands.
Many will also consider this to belong to an offshoot genre called mathcore, which is metalcore mixed with elements of math rock/metal and progressive metal. Common traits of this genre include fast tempos, odd time signatures, frequent time signature changes, and a more experimental sound overall. Bands represented by this album include Converge, The Dillinger Escape Plan, Coalesce, 7 Angels 7 Plagues, Kiss it Goodbye, Deadguy etc. | 2 | | Misery Signals Controller
Melodic Metalcore/ METALcore/ Metal Influenced Metalcore:
This album represents the more melodic offshoot of metalcore. This can also be summarised simply as bands that are more metal than hardcore influenced. Bands represented by this album include Parkway Drive, Killswitch Engage, Northlane, Prayer For Cleansing, Unearth, Bullet For My Vallentine, As I Lay Dying, August Burns Red, Every Time I Die, Frontierer, All That Remains (early) etc. | 3 | | Poison the Well The Opposite of December
metalCORE/ Hardcore Influenced Metalcore:
This album represents metalcore bands who have their roots in hardcore or show a stronger influence from hardcore, at least more so than metal. Many '1st wave' or 'metallic hardcore' metalcore bands are also represented here. Bands represented by this album include : Unbroken, Morning Again, Snapcase, Disembodied, Shai Hulud, Cave In, Earth Crisis, Hatebreed, Marauder etc. | 4 | | Underoath Define the Great Line
'Second Wave'/ Early 2000's/ Skinny Jeans and keyboardists/ Breakdowns4God Metalcore:
This album represents the early 2000's wave of metalcore which introduced synth and piano sections into the music as well as choruses and hooks that are sung instead of only screamed. This era is what most people refer to when talking about how metalcore sucks, sounds the same, blah blah blah. A lot of Christian metalcore bands, some good and some bad also appeared around this time. Both of these types of bands are represented by this album. Those bands include The Amity Affliction, I Killed The Prom Queen, blessthefall, Haste The Day, The Chariot, Memphis May Fire, Architects, The Devil Wears Prada, Miss May I, Norma Jean, We Came As Romans etc. | 5 | | Attila About That Life
Stereotypical/ Unoriginal/ Bad/ New/ Metalcore:
This album represents the worst of the 'new wave' of metalcore bands. Straight up hot garbage that only acts to perpetuate the negative stereotypes that surround the genre as a whole and give it a bad name. This album represents bands like Asking Alexandria, Black Veil Brides, Attack Attack!, Issues, Crown the Empire etc. | |

08.22.18 | I think some of your groupings are a little weird. Like Norma Jean and The Chariot May not have been first wave but had infinitily more in common with bands like Botch and Coalesce than they did The Devil Wears Prada or We Came As Romans. I also don’t really think Every Time I Die belongs on melodic metalcore, and Kiss It Goodbye should gonin the first category | G0atC0re
08.22.18 | Yeah, that's the problem, there's a lot of overlap. Every Time I Die belongs on that because they have a more metal influenced sound, not because they're overly melodic. Norma Jean and The Chariot are there because they are Christian bands, again, had to be some overlap. I'll move Kiss it Goodbye though, if it it'll make you feel any better. lol | Space Jester
08.22.18 | It's an incredibly broad genre so overlap will definitely be there. It probably just comes down to me seeing bands I like grouped with bands I don’t but like lol. | G0atC0re
08.22.18 | Yeah, this list is more about breaking the genre up into different groups based on eras, sound differences and thematic and influence differences. Rather than bad or good, except for 1 being the best and 5 being some of the worst. | Dewinged
08.22.18 | God save Botch to be metalcore, but I can see what you meant with that. Legendary album, and good job on the descriptions. | ilovewhiskey
08.22.18 | Poison The Well is awesome but for some reason I notice they have a strange sound for the cymbals. Like, they're extra tingy. I can't really explain it. Maybe spotify just has a shitty mix | accompliceofmydeath
08.22.18 | This is honestly pretty accurate. 3 and its respective style 4 lyfe tho. | DungeonBoy
08.22.18 | This is good man, I really enjoy a lot of metalcore bands like Shai Hulud, Snapcase, PTW, Strife, etc. but tend to dislike modern metalcore. The best metalcore was when bands rooted in hardcore added metal elements. | JustJoe.
08.22.18 | What about Integrity? | DungeonBoy
08.22.18 | They fall into 3, duh | JustJoe.
08.22.18 | I just wanted their name included that's all! | DungeonBoy
08.22.18 | lol I know | butt.
08.22.18 | I mostly agree except that using Define the Great Line to represent i killed the prom queen, amity affliction, memphis may fire, wcar, etc.....that doesn't work at all. Idk where Underoath fits in, but define the great line/lost in the sound/disambiguation were all top tier metalcore albums. more mature and usually darker than most of the other bands you listed. good songwriting, good lyrics, yeah. | botb
08.22.18 | Backed | pjquinones747
08.22.18 | Fails to consider the vein of metalcore influenced by melodic death metal (Killswitch Engage, All That Remains, Sylosis, Trivium, etc)
For better or for worse if you're gonna get the good and the bad, you gotta consider the in between as well. | TheSpirit
08.22.18 | misery signals and BMFV in the same category? ... interesting...
| Risodo
08.22.18 | great idea for a list, but your picks are kind odd, doesn't fit in some arguments. BFMV and Misery on the same category is laughable indeed | accompliceofmydeath
08.22.18 | What about mosh metal? Stuff like On Broken Wings, Remembering Never and Bury Your Dead? I guess I'd kinda lump them in with 3 since most of those bands came up in the hardcore scene, but it could be a category unto its own. | pjquinones747
08.22.18 | Yeah i didnt see the "bands similar" thing at the bottom of each blip but there was a very big subgenre within metalcore that was influenced by melodeath that tons of metalcore artists respect individually, that toured together exclusively, that influenced future artists, etc. Not giving that brand of metalcore it's own recognition is rather puzzling. | DungeonBoy
08.22.18 | Did you look at 2? That's like all of those bands lol | Sinternet
08.22.18 | this is honestly nowehre near accurate | pjquinones747
08.22.18 | I did, Dungeon, that's the issue. Melodeath influenced metalcore needs its separate recognition and I don't think Misery Signals fits that bill. To say Misery Signals sounds anything like Sylosis or Trivium is crazy. | scoopitypoop
08.23.18 | Team 4 all the way | scoopitypoop
08.23.18 | This is a great list. Anyone whos bitching is taking it too serious. | G0atC0re
08.23.18 | Man did you guys actually read this list properly? Stop looking too far into the specific bands mentioned/ not mentioned. They're just representing the different styles of metalcore.
For example 2 represents melodic metalcore and metal influenced metalcore as a whole. BFMV is heavily metal influenced and Misery Signals are melodic metalcore. I know they are very different sounding bands and your personal opinion on the band is irrelevent to this list. | G0atC0re
08.23.18 | @pjquinones747, yeah, the melo death influenced is clearly 2. | G0atC0re
08.23.18 | @Sinternet Please make your own list, then I can nitpick it ;) | G0atC0re
08.23.18 | @scoopitypoop Thank you, yeah this is just an idea I had. People shouldn't take it so seriously. | JustJoe.
08.23.18 | No but I know I just wanted parts of your list to say what I wanted because I'm selfish. | Deez
08.23.18 | You cant leave out the likes of Integrity.Earth crisis. Rorschach. Thats where it all began. | G0atC0re
08.23.18 | They're not left out, hence etc. | SteakByrnes
08.23.18 | This is a good list boyo, 2 and 4 are my shit but I like it all except for most of 5 | Deez
08.23.18 | A footnote for the Pioneers!!?? Gtfoh Number 1 should be integ and go from there.
That new wave of MC is truly ridiculous | J() Alexander
08.23.18 | Stereotypical/ Unoriginal/ Bad/ New/ Metalcore is my favorite genre | FearThyEvil
08.23.18 | Frontierer does not fit melodic metalcore at all. | G0atC0re
08.23.18 | @FearThyEvil metal influenced. | FearThyEvil
08.23.18 | I'm dumb and didn't really read that. My b | TheClansman95
08.23.18 | interesting list I must say | fathergascoigne
11.18.21 | 2,4,5 is the only thing why metalcore ruin |
