Atmospheric Sludge Metal

According to RYM this is a genre. I've been really enjoying what I've heard of it so far, here are my thoughts on a few of them. My takes are probably shit but eh, there's nothing objective about feelings in the first place
1Neurosis
Through Silver In Blood

I love the vocals on this, they're equally shrieky and manacing, The way they sing the lyrics almost remind me of violent unruly sports fans. I also love how the guitars sound nasty on these songs, I'm no guitar nerd, so I can't give any real technical descriptions, but the way the guitars sound on Purify in particular comes off as straight up diseased to me.
2ISIS
Oceanic

I consider this album somewhat relaxing. Many of the songs have a constant rhythm that feels like the ebb and flow of an ocean. The vocals, although growl-y, don't really break up the calming feel that the riffs seem to cast on me like a spell, in fact they just feel they naturally fit in. This is a really nice album for reading or relaxing to
3ISIS
Celestial

While its songwriting doesn't quite match up to Oceanic's, it has very memorable riffs in its stead. I also really like the general heaviness of this record, gives off an entirely different mood to its successor. Where Oceanic felt calming and steady, this one feels explosive and energetic.
4Cult of Luna and Julie Christmas
Mariner

I'm currently making my way through CoL's discography and this was one of the first of theirs I checked out. Something about their sound in particular really appeals to me, and I find that Julie Christmas's vocals really work well within the CoL framework. Christmas's vocals aren't amazing, but they help bring an eerieness to the record. Even on Wreck of the SS Needle, which the reviewer for this record pointed out as a showcase of her weakness as a vocalist, I found really enjoyable. Idk, there's something about Julie's off kilter vocals that really work with CoL's brand of riffs
5Cult of Luna
The Long Road North

I'm currently forming my thoughts on this record, but I love the production, gives the songs an explosive quality that I feel really fits CoL's sound. The album doesn't really differ much in core sound from Mariner, with the exception of a lack of Julie's vocals, but still find it an engaging listen from front to back
