09.18.14 | Dude just take it easy you don't have to stress over college, you don't have to declare a major or anything
right away.

09.18.14 | That SKM album will only make you feel worse. Why don't you lean more towards an upbeat sound like Japandroids, Woods, Cloud Nothings, or even the new Jack White. Senior year was great for me, even with those fears weighing heavy on me, you're still a good 8 months away from really stressing about that. |

09.18.14 | I didn't even take my ACT until the fall following graduation. I just took a year off between high school
and college to work, and to think about what I wanted to do.
Even with that and two years of college behind me, I've changed majors three times and eventually decided to
stick with Philosophy and Politics.
Assuming you've already taken the ACT/SAT, don't stress too much. Your general studies courses are there for
a reason. You'd be shocked at how many people wait until the end of their sophomore year before they end up
declaring a major.

09.18.14 | Also, unless you plan on majoring in a technical or science program, your major doesn't really matter. A
liberal arts education emphasizes certain skill sets that are universal to the humanities, the arts, and the
social sciences; i.e., critical thinking, problem solving, being an effective communicator/organizer...ect.
All the more reason to just take gen ed courses, and major in what you enjoy or have a strong interest in. |

09.18.14 | And in terms of senior year, relax man. It's scary at first but no matter what you decide/do it'll work out. I was freaking out at the beginning of my senior year too and ended up going to school and majoring in something I never thought I could and love it. Just chill and have some fun man. |

09.18.14 | First half of senior year sucks. There's no way around that. College apps are stressful as hell, you start worrying about what you want to do when you get to college, the work load seems like too much, etc. Trust me, after New Years when all of your stuff is submitted, it gets a lot better. Make sure to do Early Action to the schools that offer it, it'll give you peace of mind to know earlier (I found out I got into the school I'm at right now in January). Make sure to have safety schools and the like, also go for reach schools just to see what happens. This is my first year of college and I'm still undecided what I want to do, but I feel a lot better than I did in high school mainly because I get to choose only the classes I want and from there I'm starting to figure out what I may want to go into. Second half of senior year is so incredibly laid back though, teachers stop caring, students stop caring, and the last month of school was pretty much just movies. Get through these next three months and it gets infinitely better. Good luck, man. |

09.18.14 | More casual advice: get an English teacher to look over your college essays. They can help you sharpen your writing and
get rid of unnecessary language so you can put more thoughts within the word limit. |

09.18.14 | yeah like others said, the college stuff bites. I couldn't figure out where I wanted to go until much later but I just applied to all the major schools and a few others that interested me pretty early on. maybe look into visiting any prospective schools on a weekend where you're not working or something, if at all possible, it definitely goes a long way in easing your decision (unless you plan on going out of state/country; that'll be harder to plan around). My senior year was mostly electives because I had nothing else to do really, so it became a breeze after college stuff was out of the way.
And not knowing what you want to do right away is more normal than you think. I didn't settle on a major until the end of my sophomore year, and I'm getting by just fine. |
beefshoes
09.18.14 | The only people that give a shit about your major are yourself (as you should, since you're probably going to be in tens of thousands of dollars in debt at the least unless you're rich), and your parents. Employers could care less unless you're trying to get an engineering job with an English degree. |

11.10.14 | one of the first times ive been on sputnik since 2009 and i stumbled upon this post. made me realize how long it has been and all the things that have changed between 2009 and now. with that said, the best words of advice are just dont burn bridges. things dont go as planned and tons will change. as long as you stay positive and keep from burying yourself, everything figures itself out. some albums i really got into in my senior year were either/or by elliott smith as well as his self titled. in rainbows by radiohead had just came out as well. give old pride by pianos become the teeth a listen to. |
jsaf7
11.23.14 | After i graduated high school, i went to a local community college in the area to get my grades up a bit for an actual college, but realizing that i wasn't motivated enough yet, i took a little time off and now i am at New England Tech pursuing a degree in video/audio/radio production... I read that you were interested in majoring in something music related, but it didn't seem very practical to you though... I would recommend checking out a technical school, and trying Video/audio/radio maybe. I actually like it so far (though i'm only in the video segment, i'm looking forward to the rest of the program) Having video and radio under your belt, as well as audio, will make you more marketable in the long run. So if you can't find a job doing something audio/music related, you still have video/radio to fall back on just in case. And since you're obviously quite interested in music, (since you're on this site, of course) it shouldn't be very hard to stay motivated... Tech schools are usually very expensive, so if it isn't within your budget, or your parents/financial aid can't cover the cost, you should probably seek other options...Of course, this is only a recommendation... And i encourage you to do whatever you think is best for you in the long run, but if my suggestion interests you enough, you should definitely give it a shot. |
