05.28.22 | In terms of it offering up anything new rather than regurgitation of the same old same old and sterile, corporate ânu metalâ nonsense yeah it did die around the early 90s |
JKing92
05.28.22 | As someone who loves '90s alt-metal (System of a Down, Tool, Deftones) and generally dismisses the NWOBHM, I can't even begin to explain just how much I disagree with this sentiment. |
Kusangii
05.28.22 | Anyone who knows the history of metal and understands what metal is all about would never say such a thing. Metal is all about innovation. Always pushing the genre beyond its limits. Achieving heights of complexity and genius that mankind never even thought they could reach. All of that stopped slowly but surely in 93. Anyone who thinks otherwise is either a complete moron or doesn't know the history or purpose of metal. |
zakalwe
05.28.22 | Agreed |
IsisScript80
05.28.22 | "elitists are elite for a reason."
No, "elitists" are self-proclaimed. It's in most cases, an egocentric's hyper-inflated sense of superiority of opinion to others and in no way a title that is earned.
Case in point, here. |
Kusangii
05.28.22 | So basically just Casavir |
DoofDoof
05.28.22 | The soul of metal probably died in â93 - but some good albums were still released later
Similar to the soul of rock, last seen around â98 or so
The soul of indie schmindie stuff is still going strong thankfully đ
Pop punk never had a soul |
Kusangii
05.28.22 | Tbh there was so much poser metal already in the 80's a la glam metal so you could make the point it already died there |

No offense to you personally, but to hell with that. What matters is what I hear, not the innovation and complexity that a band brings to the table. The fact that, say, Korn's debut means more to me personally than an armload of Maiden and Priest records has nothing to do with Korn being more "complex" than those two bands, and has everything to do with me liking it far more. It has nothing to do with me being a "moron" or "not knowing the history of metal" (nice generalization there, btw), it just so happens that nu metal connects more with me and that I have long viewed the NWOBHM as an important movement when it came to influencing bands I enjoy strongly (Metallica, Slayer, Alice in Chains, SOAD, Deftones), but that I have little use for outside of this context. Ultimately, all that matters to me is whether or not I like what I hear, not technical innovation, which rarely has any baring on my opinion of a piece of music. |
