Album Digging - April (2nd Half)

Oooooooooooh I sure do hate talking to people - I listen to music even rmore often than not rrrrwhen I'm in public now.
12Placebo
Meds

Ahahhh I'm so tired.
Favourite Track: Space Monkey
11Cult of Luna
Salvation

I still miss Damnation Festival and the fact I missed these guys. I'd kill to be able to go to
Beyond the Redshift.
Favourite Track: Crossing Over
10The Mars Volta
Noctourniquet

Hadn't listened to this album in a long time - there are some really solid tracks off this album,
and some not so solid tracks. It's a great album, but it doesn't really compare to the rest of The
Mars Volta's discography - because it shouldn't be compared. The sounds are completely
different, and both this album and say, Deloused, have their unique qualities about them. I still
prefer Deloused, but this is fair sound as well.
Favourite Track: Noctourniquet
9The Hoosiers
The Trick to Life

Apparently The Hoosiers have a new album out - I wasn't aware of this until recently.
Hell, I didn't even know if they were still knocking about. Anyways, this album - muh
nostalgia, muh britpop. Despite what a lot of people think, I really love it.
Favourite Track: Run Rabbit Run
8Coheed and Cambria
From Fear Through the Eyes of Madness

If you haven't noticed, I've been writing this list backwards from #1 to #12, and I'm
knackered, so sorry about the lack of quality from here onwards.
What is there to say about this album apart from its bloody great? It's a pain in the arse to
type it's name up, that's one thing. (Edit: Oh man, turns out I don't even have to do all the Good Apollo I'm Burning crap).
Favourite Track: The Willing Well III: Apollo II: The Telling Truth
7The Mars Volta
Frances the Mute

I fear that I overlook Frances the Mute too much - originally, it was only meant to
be 4 songs long, so Miranda... and Cassandra Gemini were meant to be full tracks
instead of split. Naturally because of this, it's only fair to listen to them in full, and
most of the time I just don't have the attention span for that sort of thing,
especially when the parts are so contrasting. So earlier in the month, I sat down to
listen to it in full again, and I remembered how amazing this album is. It's en-par
with Deloused, I'd say, and the saxophones make it even better.
Favourite Track: Cassandra Gemini
6Naked Truth
Ouroboros

Experimental jazz fusion group Naked Truth's latest release is a bit hit and miss in some places.
It's not easy listening and there's too much jarring too often, but God - the opening track. Dust
is just magnificent. Whether or not this album sounds like your type of thing, check out 'Dust' -
the saxophone in it is just hnnnnnnnnng. (I'm a sucker for saxophones, if you haven't noticed).
Favourite Track: Dust
5Steve Reich
Phases - A Nonesuch Retrospective

This again - there's just so much diverse music on it, it's very difficult to put away.
Great to chill to, great to study to, and his music is brilliantly and subtly crafted.
Favourite Track: Cello Counterpoint
4Engineers
Engineers

Wonderfully laidback shoegaze album - really solid too. There's no song worthy of
skipping, but there's no song that you'd jump to either. I listened to this when I went
running as well on a different day, and it was pretty nice - I find it better listening to
something a little lighter so that it doesn't screw up my pace.
Favourite Track: New Horizons
3Anubis
230503

ALL ABOARD THE HYPE TRAIN
Cinematic progressive rock band Anubis' new album 'Hitchhiking to Byzantium' is being released
in May, and the anticipation is unbearable. After hearing the new single 'A King With No Crown'
(after many many many times) - I listened through Anubis' other two albums many a time, and I
really hope that the rest of this new album is just as good as their other two. My only complaint
about the band's new release is that the official album t-shirt is just the artist and album name
in white text instead of making the album art into a full tshirt design. I mean, c'mon -
http://i.imgur.com/GZRuYwj.jpg - it's absolutely beautiful.
230503 is an epic album, there isn't a single weak song on it, I highly recommend.
Favourite Track: Disinfected and Abused
2Anubis
A Tower of Silence

THERE ARE NO BREAKS ON THE HYPE TRAIN
I first found out about Anubis through ProgArchives just because the artwork caught my eye - and my god, what a find!. Like
230503, A Tower of Silence is another concept album, but I won't go into too much detail. The opening track The Passing Bell
is one of my favourite songs of all time - everything about it is fantastic. That bass, them
vocals, them lyrics, them heavy riffs, that ambient atmospheric break. God, I love this song.
But seriously - you need to check out Anubis, they're easily the best 'upcoming' progressive
rock band of the decade.
Favourite Track: The Passing Bell
1Shining
Live Blackjazz

Holy Jesus, I still can't get enough of this album. After a shit week, I watched the full
concert on DVD on Sunday evening whilst drinking - and it was brilliant. Frankly, I'm
surprised I didn't have seizures with the amount of strobes they had. Shining have easily
become one of my favourite bands in the past year, I've never heard anything like them,
never even conceived the thought of Jazz Metal before - Live Blackjazz is their finest
piece of work they've ever done.
Favourite Track: Goretex Weather Report
