Omaha's Life Recently

One thing that keeps me fascinated with music overall is how it essentially works as a scrapbook of my life, how with each album I devote time to I can recall where specifically in my life I was when I became immersed in it. Lately has been no exception; I figured making a list of it would make it all just a little more fruitful.

Aim and Ignite

I was so turned off from this album for the longest time, simply because my ex
was obsessed with fun. and it made me think of her. However, as time passed I
realized that there really is something special about this group, and although
they do seem to have lost a little bit of magic on their latest album through a
more superfluous use of technology, this album is just incredible. They feel so
much more at home with the instrumentation presented on this debut. But I
guess this album helped me to receive a little bit of closure that I otherwise
wouldn't have had, which I am so thankful for.
2Sithu Aye
Isles

I have spent so much time digesting this EP, because it's simply the most
engaging music I've come across in a very long time. Sometimes I forget why I
even spend a lot of time on websites like Sputnik, and these thoughts cross my
mind while I'm not really finding any music that affects me terribly. However,
this album made me realize that at heart I really am a big progressive junkie,
and I feel like that's going to be my main emphasis in my future reviews. It's
good to have discovered a niche I can work with.
3Emery
We Do What We Want

This album looks very feigned from the start, and the idea of a band trying to
obtain slices of its former glory came to mind immediately when I heard about
this album. However, I can safely say that this album is about as good as ...In
Shallow Seas We Sail, and the heavy moments here are so gratifying. This is
one of my quintessential summer albums, and I'm sure this year's will be no
exception.
4Courtships
The Feral Sound

It's just crazy how much of an impact music can have on our well-being, and
not even from an emotional standpoint only but also how it gives us motivation.
I'm not the kind of guy that can run 4+ miles without stopping once. However,
once I started listening to this album at the gym I was given a new sense of
energy, and it was revitalizing. Their sheer power is something that can be hard
to find in other groups often, and so with this release I've had to listen to it
more than I perhaps should have.
5Shearwater
The Golden Archipelago

This album is a testament to the fundamental truth of lurking music review
sites. You won't be able to listen to everything. You have to pick and choose
wisely what albums you want to devote your efforts towards, because there
isn't anything more rewarding than when those slavish efforts actually pay off.
Shearwater's a fine example for me; I've listened to the Golden Archipelago so
many times at this point that there's no way I could give you an estimate that's
even close to being accurate. And that's how it should be with our favorite
albums. It would make me happy if we saw a shift from caring so much about
rating numbers to us trying to locate which albums we'll have the most
poignant experiences with. that's one thing I've realized lately, and it's kept me
in a musical place lately where I've just been remembering the greatest
discoveries I've found on this site, and in my life overall. Because at the end of
the day, these albums are the ones that will truly matter to us.

Hurry Up, We're Dreaming

This is sheer bliss for me. When I hear this album, I think about my new
relationship, this incredible person I've been lucky enough to date, and the road
that took me from just getting to know her better to taking initiative and asking
her out. And I feel like this is the most powerful relationship I've ever had, and
it's a wonderful feeling. I recall walking from my college dorms towards my
apartment, blasting "This Bright Flash" over and over again, never growing tired
of the potency of the album's peaks. This album already means the world to me,
considering the experiences I've shared with it, but it's even more exciting to
consider what will happen next with it for me.
7The Mars Volta
Noctourniquet

My girlfriend and I were driving home from school on the way to a benefit
concert I was playing a drum solo in, and so naturally, I had to play something
that led me to think more musically creatively. However, I didn't fancy the idea
of blasting Dillinger with her, so I figured the new Mars Volta would be an ample
substitute. And it really is a delicate balance between the group going crazy, as
they always have, and really pretty harmonies illustrating the growth that the
band has undergone. And instead of dropping all their tricks into a single song,
like has been the case with past releases (i.e. every single one of their other
albums), this one is pretty damn good throughout. It gives me hope for the
Mars Volta, and also gives us something to listen to that kinda works for both of
us.
8Nujabes
Spiritual State

My close friend David and I were recently discussing the potency of hip-hop,
what it takes for a song within the genre to really speak to us. And while it's
true that the lyrics are very vital to the overall relevance and strength of a hip-
hop track, we were talking about how the other instrumental elements are just
as equally vital. And we eventually got to talking about how Nujabes always had
a knack for bringing in talented artists to place their lyrics over his lovely and
passionate beats. It's good to know that there are some musicians out there
that make it very evident how passionate they are about their music, and it
makes me even happier to know that Nujabes received a lot of credit for what
he created throughout his life.
9Opeth
Watershed

Yeah, I did check out Blackwater Park first. How'd you know? And it wasn't
nearly as great as I'd hoped it would be. (another example of musical hype
working strangely) . But I soon checked out Watershed, because I simply
wanted to understand why so many liked Opeth, and why I hadn't become
attached to them and their music quite yet. This one hit the sweet spot for me -
it's beautifully structured, its heavier moments are earth-shattering, and its
more tranquil moments are gorgeous. This album has inspired me to take a look
into the band's other works to see what else I can enjoy.

Universal Pulse

Yeah, I'll always be a huge fan of these guys. It's partially a nostalgic thing, but
also upon revisiting this album I saw it was a lot better than I remembered. 311
are a pretty consistent group, and it's nice to see that at least one group from
my childhood have kept themselves together rather nicely while my other
previous favorites, like the Chili Peppers and Incubus, seem to be in an
unfortunate stasis.
