02.28.12 | Well crafted list dude. When i first saw it i instantly remember the discussion we had made and the inducement i had made to you to search for the roots of metal because you really like the genre. I have already listen to most of these songs and bands and all i can say is this: It has been an amazing journey. I'm sure you too enjoyed the ride.
Cream's debut has also several amazing tracks: spoonful the heaviest track, sweet wine has an amazing solo, and i feel free is awesome as well. The last track was an inspiration for Zeppelin's Moby Dick and Sabbath's Rat Salad.
"The Open Mind - Magic Potion
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4RQM4r9mo6o
Probably the introduction of double-bass drums in rock music"
Gringer Baker of Cream introduced double-bass drumming.
I would replace Hendrix's Crosstown Traffic with Voodoo Child (Slight Return).
If you loved Jeff Beck's debut album add Beck-Ola to your list.
lol even though i don't know what a feature list is, this needs to be featured [4] |
TheNotrap
02.28.12 | Thanks for your feedback man your opinion is always appreciated.
Yeah I remember our chat quite well.
Just by curiosity can you tell me what Cream song Gringer Baker used the double-bass drumming? I need to check that. |
rockandmetaljunkie
02.28.12 | You forgot to add an essential track: Mountain's Mississippi Queen
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qFhM1XZsh6o
Dig their debut once you have some free time.
Also don't forget to dig Sir Lord Baltimore's debut.
Both albums are amazing. |

02.28.12 | "Just by curiosity can you tell me what Cream song Gringer Baker used the double-bass drumming? I need to check that."
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Toad_(instrumental)
Check the page.
I asked a friend of mine who is a drummer, and he told me that this, is the first recorded track in history of Rock music featuring a double-bass. |
TheNotrap
02.28.12 | Man I've got material to make another list. Just picked 60 songs I found essential in one way or another.
These are pre-sabbath songs, I believe Sir Lord Baltimore's debut was released in 1970. Indeed Kingdom Come is an essential work. |
rockandmetaljunkie
02.28.12 | "These are pre-sabbath songs, I believe Sir Lord Baltimore's debut was released in 1970."
That's true, and i never said it's like proto-metal or something.
But, like you said it's an essential work and such albums deserve some digging. |
TheNotrap
02.28.12 | yeah impressive drum solo. Difficult to tell but yes I believe he uses the double-bass on the solo.
But if you listen to The Open Mind's Magic Potion the double-bass drumming is used during the song, a standard metal technique used mostly in the 80's. |
JamieTwort
02.29.12 | Just listened to Magic Potion. Rules hard. |
TheNotrap
02.29.12 | Indeed JT.
If you wish listen also to Jacula - Triumphatus Sad and The 31 Flavors - Distortions of Darkness.
Impressive distorted guitars. Pre-Iommi obscure stuff. |
JamieTwort
02.29.12 | Listening to Jacula now, sounds almost like early doom metal at times. Great stuff. |

02.29.12 | good list... looks like shit doesn't hit the fan until '69 |
TheNotrap
02.29.12 | @JT
And take a look into Coven's occult imagery:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bs_jvO9uevQ
Horns up!
Indeed Activista, 1969 was definitely the proto-metal year, however we find baby steps since the early 60's.

02.29.12 | i guess i have always been pretty obstinate that sabbath started metal, but it's pretty clear that many of its origins were elsewhere. i subscribe to the interpretation that sabbath took all the different elements and made them into a cohesive whole - the metal.
in high school, i read an unofficial history of metal that started with black sabbath and followed it through the creation of death and black metal... i would love to find that book again... it was written by one of Lemmy Kilmister's disciples (a roadie) who achieved considerable fame among the mainstream media for doing something out of the ordinary (exactly what, I don't remember)... very good read, and if i can remember what book it was/who the author was i will be sure to post it, because it looks as though there might be some interest in this edition... |
TheNotrap
02.29.12 | You're right. Sabbath's debut is the first true metal album (even with tons of blues rock and jazz links) but many previous bands already started to explore that new path. If you wish follow the songs chronologically.
That book seems interesting man. Share with us. |

Sound of the Beast: The Complete Headbanging History of Heavy Metal by Ian Christe
= 400-500 pages if i remember correctly
I can't remember what happened with Ian Christe and Lemmy but something happened that was bizarre, and that's how he was introduced to the world. If I remember correctly, he was a kid at the time... I don't remember. Cheers!
PS: I am going to try to get a hold of one of these copies again! It was very informative. I remember that it gave a lot of details! Bands, big names, etc. A good read! I highly recommend it for every metal head. I am not as big a metal head as I used to be, but this is still definitely a high reading priority! |
Activista anti-MTV
03.01.12 | There's a few bands on here that I haven't listened to, but the Stooges were sludge-y as hell yet they don't receive a lot of credit for that innovation among metal-heads... nice addition to the list! |
