Try Some Music From New Zealand
Just some recommendations, in no particular order. I haven't bothered to include the great albums by the good old NZ bands - Split Enz, The Muttonbirds, Crowded House, The Clean and so forth. Most of the albums listed are from the past decade. They're all great, it's a shame they don't generally seem to be in Sputnik's database. If you're into Nu-Metal (I'm not) try Blindspott and ditto for Emo and The Bleeders. |
1 | | Liam Finn I'll Be Lightning
Awesome debut from Neil Finn's son. Self desribed as "Experimental Pop". Has the same Beatles-flavoured feel for harmony as you'd hear on a Crowded House record. |
2 | | Goldenhorse Riverhead
Very quirky and enjoyable pop-rock, loads of great songs that veer off in unexpected directions. |
3 | | Goldenhorse Out Of The Moon
Second album, not quite as surprising, but very enjoyable nonetheless. |
4 | | Superette Tiger
Great stuff. Alternative. Their only album unfortunately. |
5 | | Pluto Red Light Syndrome
Not to be confused with the American pun-pop band by the same name. This album is very good. |
6 | | Pluto Pipeline Under The Ocean
Pluto's second album is also very good. Alternative rock. |
7 | | Goodshirt Good
Amusing pop-rock, unusual instrumentation, song structures and lyrics - all enjoyably concocted. |
8 | | Evermore Dreams
3 Brothers making distinctive pop-rock. Some great and memorable songs. |
9 | | Evermore Real Life
Very good second album. |
10 | | Elemeno P Love and Disrespect
These guys don't take themselves seriously and they're awesome at it. Punk format, but not hardcore at all, or trying to be. 2 parts sense of humour, one part musicianship. |
11 | | Opshop You Are Here
More conventional rock, with some great songs. |
12 | | Shihad Churn
Alternative rock with an industrial edge. Considered Shihad's best by many. |
13 | | Shihad Shihad
Shihad take a more varied approach, mixing hard rock with indie-pop and garage elements. My favourite Shihad album. |
14 | | Shihad The General Electric
Great and distinctive rock album. Loads of excellent songs. |
15 | | The Mint Chicks Crazy? Yes! Dumb? No!
Alternative rock. Very good stuff, off the beaten path but extremely enjoyable. |
16 | | Salmonella Dub Inside The Dub Plates
Great dub album from NZ. |
17 | | The Black Seeds On The Sun
More great dub. Great tunes. |
18 | | Fat Freddy's Drop Based On A True Story
Soulful dub from NZ's masters. Awesome album. |
19 | | Concord Dawn Uprising
Great (and refreshingly nusical for the genre) Drum and Bass album. |
20 | | The Finn Brothers Everyone Is Here
Great reunion album by Neil and Tim Finn (Crowded House, Split Enz etc), the patron saints of NZ music. |
21 | | Breaks Co-op The Sound Inside
hard to defin, but really good. Indie/roots/electronica? |
22 | | Greg Johnson Here Comes The Caviar
Excellent singer-songwriter album. |
23 | | The Feelers Communicate
Rock. Some great tunes. |
24 | | The Feelers Supersystem
This is a very good rock album. The mellower songs are the best though. |
25 | | The Datsuns The Datsuns
Frenetic garage rock. Pretty good too. |
26 | | Brooke Fraser What To Do With Daylight
Great singer-songwriter, beautiful voice and meaningful lyrics. |
27 | | Brooke Fraser Albertine
More of the same, gratefully accepted. |
28 | | Bic Runga Drive
Bic is just an awesome singer-songwriter. Her first album is very good. |
29 | | Bic Runga Beautiful Collision
Her second album is exceptional. Definitely my favourite of the three. Beautifully crafted songs. |
30 | | Bic Runga Birds
The third album is nice too. |
