R.e.m. 40
I've been a huge R.E.M. fan my whole life, and here's my top 40 favorite songs. It's sad they've broken up, but its great to see musicians who know when to quit cough cough Billy Corgan. I'd love to hear comments from fellow R.E.M. fans! |
40 | R.E.M. (Don't Go Back to) Rockville
Good country vibe to it. |
39 | You
Phenomenal closer to Monster, feels like the desert. |
38 | The Flowers of Guatemala |
37 | Gardening at Night
SITAR |
36 | Let Me In
Spiny guitar here is flawless with minimal percussion. |
35 | Star Me Kitten
One of my favorite parts of Automatic for the People is the transition from the dark cloudy purple of Star Me Kitten to the Man on the Moon. |
34 | Laughing
One of the best from Murmur. |
33 | Second Guessing |
32 | Half a World Away
One of the most beautiful songs on my favorite R.E.M. album. |
31 | Supernatural Superserious
A bit poppy but great. It's a summer song. |
30 | We Walk
Feels like a fairy tale to me. |
29 | At My Most Beautiful |
28 | Leaving New York
Great song, terrible album |
27 | Talk About the Passion
Not quite as high as I'm sure some fans will put it, but amazing nonetheless. |
26 | Try Not to Breathe
Feels like flying. |
25 | Driver 8 |
24 | Be Mine
An underrated gem, the guitar on this song is phenomenally warm. |
23 | Stand |
22 | Pop Song 89 |
21 | Pretty Persuasion |
20 | Begin the Begin |
19 | Electrolite |
18 | Tongue
Definitely the most effective song on Monster. Great cool down. |
17 | Imitation of Life
Best song on the disappointing Reveal. |
16 | Finest Worksong
Great opener to Document. |
15 | It's the End of the World as We Know It
It's a jam. |
14 | Pilgrimage
Mysterious feel to it. |
13 | Man on the Moon
The guitar sound on this song is phenomenal. |
12 | Everybody Hurts
I can see people criticizing this song for the lyrics, but it's a great somber track and very moving. Definitely one of my wintery favorites. |
11 | The One I Love
My favorite song on Document. Haunting and effective. |
10 | Fall on Me
Beautiful song and one of Michael Stipe's favorites. When Mike Mills takes over the vocals is one of my favorite R.E.M. moments. |
9 | Shiny Happy People
Funny song, golden guitar riff, good times. |
8 | Losing My Religion
Maybe overplayed, but definitely one of the greatest. |
7 | Daysleeper
It was amazing to see R.E.M. return to their old style with this AFTP-esque track on the unfamiliar yet interesting Up. |
6 | Crush with Eyeliner
My brother's favorite, this song has a lot of great moving parts with the guitar-heavy feel I love about Monster. |
5 | Radio Free Europe
One of their first and best--excellent college rocker. |
4 | The Sidewinder Sleeps Tonite
Personal favorite from the somber Automatic for the People. |
3 | Near Wild Heaven
Incredibly beautiful, pastoral song. Not sure everyone would have it this high, but I really can't justify putting it anywhere else on the list. If you haven't heard it a while give it a try. |
2 | Orange Crush
Amazing song. |
1 | What's the Frequency, Kenneth?
Really the first R.E.M. song I really paid attention to after popping in my dad's Monster CD. Great chorus and guitar work by Peter Buck, it's got a special place in my heart. |
