A Vooligan's 2011
Sooooo here we are. Yes I'm late with this and yes, i don't post as much
anymore but whatever. It's been a fucking awesome year of music.
Here's my top 40 albums and favourite 10 gigs. Enjoy the read :) |
| 1 | | Tesseract One
To be honest, i've never really had an album 'click' with me like this one did. It's
well known on here that i'm a sucker for outstanding vocals and on One, Dan
Tompkins hits the nail on the proverbial head. Combine that with some literally
incredible songwriting and you have what is fast becoming one of my favourite
albums of all time. I just seem to have a real emotional connection to it.
Tesseract are incredible. Favourite tracks: Lament, Deception, Perfection, Eden.

| 2 | | Fair To Midland Arrows and Anchors
It's fair to say that this album was fairly highly anticipated by me and it
exceeded every single expectation i had for it. It features some of the most
beautiful and stunning musical moments of 2011. For example, the chorus of
Golden Parachutes or the intro of Loophole In Limbo. This is Fair to Midland's
magnum opus, an utterly incredible record. Tracks: Golden Parachutes,
Loophole In Limbo, Bright Bulbs and Sharp Tools, Uh Oh......

| 3 | | La Dispute Wildlife
La Dispute improved way way way way out of sight with Wildlife. King Park is
easily the best song they've ever written, providing the perfect microcosm for
the entire album in that each song provides it's own little story adding to the
entire feel of the record. It's an absolute must for any post hardcore fan. At
least just listen to King Park. Not to mention, Wildlife features some of the best
lyrics to be heard in 2011. Tracks: King Park, Harder Harmonies......

| 4 | | Tangled Thoughts of Leaving Deaden The Fields
Spasmodic, technical, jazzy post rock. Tangled Thoughts of Leaving are one of
Australia's best kept secrets, releasing my favourite local album of the year. If
you're after a mind fuck with added post rock epicness, look no further than
this. Tracks: Deaden The Fields....... http://www.youtube.com/watch?

There's a reason this album was nominated for an ARIA. Floating Me's debut is

| 42 | | Portishead @ Harvest Festival
Only once before has a live show moved me as much as Portishead did that
night in November. Beth Gibbons has an absolutely incredible voice and the
emotion she put into her music is something i'll remember for the rest of my
life. This set was without a doubt a once in a life time experience. |
| 43 | | Tesseract @ The Hifi Bar
So Tesseract and Periphery booked a show at a 300 capacity venue in
Melbourne. That sold out in an hour. They upgraded the venue to the 1500
capacity Hifi bar and sold that out well before the gig. Then, on the night
Tesseract proceeded to wipe the floor with everyone. It was one of the most
intense and awesome rock sets i've ever seen. Funnily enough, it was also Dan
Tompkins' last ever show with them. |
| 44 | | Karnivool @ The Corner
It's Karnivool. I saw them two nights in a row and then a third time a month
later. It was amazing. End of story. |
| 45 | | sleepmakeswaves @ East Brunswick Club
sleepmakeswaves are one of the few post rock bands that actually resonate
with me properly making me genuinely love them. Seeing them in a live
environment only heightens that feeling with the entire band moving with each
climax. 'One Day You Will Teach Me To Let Go of My Fears' is seriously one of
the best things to see live, ever. |
| 46 | | Rammstein @ Big Day Out
Rammstein make it on to the list simply for pure ridiculousness. The
combination of fireworks, angry germans, penis foam cannons and metal
worked an absolute treat at BDO. Seriously, i dare you to not enjoy a
Rammstein set. Its physically impossible. |
| 47 | | Deftones @ The Palace
Deftones are a band that until 2011, i'd wanted to see live for a long long time.
When i finally got the chance boy did they deliver. Hot and sweaty fun from one
of the best rock bands of the last decade. |
| 48 | | Engine Three Seven @ The Evelyn
As most of Sputnik would know, i do indeed love a good local gig and Engine
Three Seven are probably the best live band in Melbourne at the moment.
When they played at The Evelyn, it was the night they filmed their live dvd
which i feature on quite prominently. Heaps of fun! |
| 49 | | Mogwai @ Harvest Festival
Huge sounding Post rock + Amazing sunset = pure epicness |
| 50 | | Dead Letter Circus @ The Corner
Dead Letter Circus up close and personal in an intimate venue. Ended up on
their music video for Reaction. What more could you want :) |
| 51 | | Floating Me @ East Brunswick Club
Another great night of Aussie progressive rock. A lovely cameo from the ever
angry Ezekiel Ox featuring a rant about Police brutality, the Occupy movement
and a whole bunch of broken TV's. Floating Me are incredible. |
| 52 | | Helm @ The Evelyn
Helm are without a doubt one of Australia's best bands. Do yourself a favour
and go see them live, buy their music and help out a hardworking band. |
