12.16.11 | and before anyone insists that Black Sabbath invented heavy metal, I'd like to point out that they spanned several genres and were a different branch of this whole heavy metal thing. |

12.16.11 | good call Hans. I suppose I begrudgingly agree with your scoring system. |

12.16.11 | I prefer Judas Priest over Maiden. |

12.16.11 | "So basically Judas Priest invented classic heavy metal and Iron Maiden perfected it."
I would say, Sabbath invented (with Purple, Zep), Priest shaped and Iron Maiden perfected.
Nice list dude. Always subjective, but still a very good list.
I will give it a try (top 10):
1 - Powerslave
2 - The Number of the Beast (I prefer the Live After Death versions though)
2 - Somewhere in Time
3 - Seventh Son of a Seventh Son
4 - Piece of Mind
5 - Painkiller
6 - Defenders of the Faith
7 - Stained Class
8 - Iron Maiden
9 - Sad Wings of Destiny
10 - Screaming for Vengeance or British Steel or Killers (hard to choose right now)
All great albums. |

12.16.11 | I'm sort of mixed on Sad Wings. It laid the groundwork for everything that came after, but Halford and Tipton were still evolving as musicians and songwriters. The Ripper, Tyrant, Island of Domination, and Victim are all classic, but even in those songs there are moments where Halford's singing doesn't fit well, or the band's timing is shaky. The track listing also irks me, since Prelude was supposed to be the opener but Gull insisted on switching the A and B sides so the flow is all messed up. Epitaph strikes me as cheesy and poorly placed, and Dreamer Deceiver, while it has some great moments, is entirely too long and sees Halford go off-key several times. So in historical context, it's Priest's most important (alongside Stained Class), but as an artistic whole, Sad Wings varies in quality enough that I couldn't crown it. |

12.16.11 | Fair enough. It will always be my favourite Priest album though. |

Indeed. British Steel was also very important. |

12.16.11 | @Zilbel and Notrap- I like Priest better also, to the point that my Iron Maiden collection rarely gets played out of spite. It's even worse with Deep Purple. I'm so pissed about all the Led Zeppelin worship compared to Purple's relative anonymity (except maybe Smoke) that I don't even have any Zeppelin in my library. Call me biased (I am), but Priest and Purple deserve far more credit and recognition than they get compared to their more famous counterparts. |

12.16.11 | The problem with Purple was the constant line-up changes. |

12.17.11 | I listen to Purple more than Zeppelin too. They're without a doubt one of my top 3 favourite bands of all time. I still love Zeppelin though. |
