12.07.11 | I knew about this two weeks ago, goddamn.
The government has been holding people indefinitely without trial in Gitmo for years now. Even with this bill making it "official" it will still be illegal under our constitution. |

12.07.11 | I think it's kind of sad that this bill has been known of and debated for quite some time now and it
takes a dude in a mask for you to actually wise up to it. Also, people forget that the United States
government has a LONG LONG history of curtailing the bill of rights during "war time". |

12.07.11 | No cold war or WWII ? No "history of capitalism", marxism/industrialization? Man, that's dark. |
Athom
12.07.11 | The cold war and wwII are on the syllabus but rarely ever gotten to. there is a bit of coverage of the industrial revolution but it's incredibly minimal and basically just a stop gap before ww1 |
Trebor.
12.07.11 | They keep Malcolm X out of the history books too cuz white people be scared of him |
Wolfhorde
12.07.11 | It's pretty hard if a country that could almost call capitalism one of their values doesn't even teach about it's history in school. |
Athom
12.07.11 | It's really weird because the industrial revolution is actually covered more in depth in US history than world history, or at least it was for me. My US history class in 11th grade was insanely in depth and felt almost like a college class (minus the papers and discussions of monetary policy) with all the notes I had to take. That teacher though you could tell actually enjoyed the topic a lot more and knew it was important. |

12.07.11 | I took AP U.S. History in high school and it pretty much covered everything from the early colonists to the Gilded Age to the War on Terrorism. |
Athom
12.07.11 | YES you used the term the Gilded Age. god damn that made me happy. |
Vesper
12.07.11 | You probably went to a public school, huh, redsky?
Don't worry, Wolf, some of us American students reach WWII/Cold War and take civics and economics in high school. But only if you go to the elite 1% schools. :]
(I say this all with utter shame for the US public education system.) |

12.07.11 | average american: what's magna carta? is that a type of car? |
eternium
12.07.11 | I'm pretty sure it all depends on the teacher. My teacher had a fetish for history and was insanely good at her job in the first place. Others spend too much time on certain subjects and thus run out of time to reach the later history. My government teacher sucked, for example, and I had to use my own knowledge to pass. My economics teacher was just annoying and could have been way more in depth.
redsky, the CollegeBoard uses the Gilded Age term, as did my teacher (obviously), and I would argue that we have been in another Gilded Age in the last couple of decades. |
Trebor.
12.07.11 | They didn't have time to teach us stuff like that
They had to make room for abstinence class |
Wolfhorde
12.07.11 | I don't doubt that there are educated American students it just sometimes boggles me how crappy the system partly seems. I mean my school is weird, like really weird. But at least they're hammering the knowledge into your head. |
Athom
12.07.11 | I actually went to a private school. I took civics and economics too when i was a senior in high school. In US history I actually got through Vietnam. I just find that when I try to have conversations with a lot of my friends they have no idea what the hell I am talking about and for those that went to public school many of them say they weren't even taught huge chunks of their history. My World History high school class was one of the aforementioned letdowns though. It's sad though when a country can't properly educate their citizens through public education to be part of the governmental process and a functioning cog in the american machine. |
Relinquished
12.07.11 | definitely |
Wolfhorde
12.07.11 | Though I have to say that we also have a big part of uneducated mess and the "lower" schools are sometimes really poor in education, as are the vocational colleges/schools for the most part. They're like a "free ride" to a good graduation. And lowering the standards and lumping together all kinds of people doesn't help that. (which is what our extremely talented government is trying atm) |
Athom
12.07.11 | @andcas: yep. they go into it trying to instill the fear of god in you and by the time you graduate all they've done is instill the fear of man in you. |
Vesper
12.07.11 | It's definitely depends on the teachers.
I was fortunate enough to go to a magnet school, which was public, incidentally - it just drew the top students from the rest of the high schools in the districts - so the general caliber of teachers was pretty high, since the positions were more highly sought.
I didn't really appreciate how well I was taught until I went to college and realized not everyone endured a grades 7-12 college prep school, ha. |
eternium
12.07.11 | It's obviously because our schools and our teachers all have liberal biases. |
Vesper
12.07.11 | It's sad though when a country can't properly educate their citizens through public education to be part of the governmental process and a functioning cog in the american machine. [6522453242]
Our country is more fucked up from a lack of education and awareness than anything else, imo. |
Athom
12.07.11 | Worst teachers I've ever had were while I was in 6th grade at a magnet middle school. Is it better? yes. Is it still flawed? yep. |

12.07.11 | The real problem is that a lot of people don't even give a shit. I have no idea how you fix that. |
Vesper
12.07.11 | Now, see, if they all had Asian parents, it would have been to either give a shit or get disowned.
(My magnet school was 75% Asian, lol.) |
Wolfhorde
12.07.11 | "The real problem is that a lot of people don't even give a shit. I have no idea how you fix that. "
^ That's not much different here for a big part. Our system forces you to either "grow up fast" or "fuck it up". I mean you can re-do your "Abitur" after an apprenticeship but you're most likely not gonna be as succesful/have to wait a jillion years for studying at universities. Many people here, especially of the lower social class or lower middle class aren't even properly educated/informed about politics. Sometimes I hear adults talking about politics on a lower standard than we do in social studies.

12.07.11 | If people really wanted to learn history and stuff they could use the internet at home |

12.07.11 | "Our system forces you to either "grow up fast" or "fuck it up"."
This is the attitude Korean immigrant parents have, because it's similar in South Korea - the university you get into pretty much determines the rest of your life. But the US has never really had this ideal, as it has traditionally been seen as the country for a fresh start.
Somehow, this has led to a our country being flooded with ignorant, entitled assholes who don't give a shit about our nation, much less how that, in turn, affects the rest of the world, so... yeah. |
eternium
12.07.11 | Actually a lot of people who are ignorant and don't even care about the issues tend to be from poorer families and already feel like they're going to have shitty jobs no matter what they do. They're more hopeless than they are spoiled. |
Vesper
12.07.11 | To clarify, I was talking about middle-class ignorance, especially when I meet fellow Asian kids who weren't raised by immigrant parents (they tend to take the relative freedom of the US for granted more so than those who were, like myself), but, yes, that's certainly true, eternium. |
Wolfhorde
12.07.11 | The middle-class kids are partly even worse, since they have the opportunity and capital to do something as most of these lower social class are partly almost "doomed" to stay an infantile idiot for the rest of their life. I mean here most people have more than one or two chances, but your chances gradually get worse the older you get and the more you "fuck up". Though of this "misery" in lower social classes can also come great motivation, it's not common but it happens. Unfortunely it's bound to be socially problematic. (I mean seriously, who wants to have a job so they are JUST able to exist and have to eat shitty food their whole life.. hell no) |
