08.12.11 | I'm self taught, been playing for about 4 years, and am good enough to fill in for a lot of local bands in my area. Check out the lessons on ultimate-guitar.com. http://www.ultimate-guitar.com/lessons/for_beginners/ is a great place to start. Also start learning songs you like that are pretty basic. I was big into Nirvana and 311 when I was learning guitar, so I basically learned every song from those bands that I liked. the most important thing is that YOU'RE NOT GOING TO GET BETTER IF YOU DON'T PRACTICE. Try to dedicate at least an hour a day to practice. Build a practice schedule. I used to warm up with finger stretching and playing basic scales for about 15-20 minutes, then playing scales to a metronome for about 10-15 minutes, then learning a new technique (pinch harmonics, hammer ons and pull-offs, alternative picking, economy picking, building chords, improvising over backing tracks, sweep picking, bends, applying theory, etc.) for about 30 minutes, and then learned songs for about 30 minutes. About 6 months in most of my friends who had been playing for years were amazed at the skill I was playing at. About 3/4ths of a year in I was playing Metallica solos and TFOT songs pretty cleanly. Basically you get what you put in. If you put in a good amount of time (an hour or two a day) for 5-6 months, you'll really be impressed with how much progress you'll make. If you play like once a week, you won't progress that fast and will get discouraged. Good luck to you though man! I was in the same place you were in when I started and had people point me in the right direction...and it really changed my life. I can't imagine my life without playing guitar. DEDICATE yourself to PRACTICE and you'll love it. |

08.12.11 | I'm self teaching myself at the moment. I pretty much play the guitar any time I have a spare second lol. I'm not 'good' yet, I'm just alright, lol. I can play some White Stripes songs, East Hastings by GY!BE, some This Will Destroy You songs, and then a song by Opeth... They were all somewhat simple, though, so I just use them to warm up now. Also, if helps a great deal if learn the notes (at least it did for me). They're not all too hard to figure out, luckily. Also, use Ultimate Guitar, practice chords and tabs over and over again. You'll eventually get it.
Again though, I've only been playing for about a month. |

08.12.11 | Definitely learn a few songs you enjoy, but not crazy technical ones.
They'll help strengthen your guitar techniques, timing, and even songwriting. |

08.12.11 | Get a friend who knows guitar... fuck chords and stuff just learn a bunch of songs with tabs. I learned the chords and complicated stuff later. |

08.12.11 | Always ALWAYS play with a metronome. |

08.12.11 | You won't be able to play chords until after a couple weeks of practice. You'll need your callouses to develop, otherwise you'll pretty much just be mutiny the strings. |

08.12.11 | I'd recommend starting without an amp (if you're using an electric). Using one can mask technique errors and it's better to get technique down from the beginning instead of getting used to a flawed style. |

08.12.11 | i try to self-teach guitar, too
my first goal is Space Cadet by Kyuss |

08.12.11 | Don't play breakdowns. It will ruin you. |

08.13.11 | The following is the ONLY advice you'll need:
1.) Don't know what you've got already, but if it's not acoustic, get one. You can get decent cheap acoustics between $100-$150, and they're much more relevant especially considering you're in college.
2.) Learn power chords, learn your basic open chords, majors and minors.
3.) When you're ready to try and learn your first actual song, pick a song you know well - the strumming patterns and changes are easier to pick up this way. Also, pick a song that's something simple, something like a 4 chord or 3 powerchord progression or something similar. Then play the fuck out of it alone in your room.
4.) Hopefully, before long, you should be able to play for people - namely all your drunk friends, and hopefully girls too, sounds corny but at the end of a long friday night, people are pretty entranced by the kid who can lead everyone in the most sloppy, revelrous singalong of "What's up?" by 4 Non Blondes.
5.) If you wanna further your guitar playing from there to more technical stuff, then yeah ultimate-guitar.com is great for tabs. It's good for the simple stuff too.
Any questions, feel free to ask. |

08.13.11 | yeah we've got some interesting ones in our group.
our apartment was located right on this big party street where I go to school, so on any given thursday/friday/saturday night we'd always end up with about half a dozen random kids in our living room just hammered and drinking our liquor (which is why we buy $12 handles haha), so one of the last nights of sophomore year, my buddy kyle and I are shit-tanked and playing requests for people and for whatever reason I was hit by a fit of musical passion during an Against Me! song, and we smashed my guitar over my head and across my chest.
awesome at the time. big regrets by morning. haha |

08.13.11 | learn all the basic chords and then use them in variation. |
